Valerie, the miniature dachshund whose appearance in newly released footage raised hopes of a rescue in April 2025, was later captured and reunited with her owners. She was found on Kangaroo Island, South Australia, after 529 days missing and went home to Georgia Gardner and Josh Fishlock on 6 May 2025.
What the footage showed—and why it mattered
In April 2025, footage showed Valerie inside or approaching a humane trap set by rescuers. At the time, she was still missing, so the images offered renewed hope that she might be caught. The footage was a moment in a long search, not confirmation that she had already been rescued. PerthNow reported the footage on 15 April 2025.
Valerie, a black-and-tan miniature dachshund, escaped from a pen in November 2023 while her owners were visiting Kangaroo Island. She tried to follow them toward Stokes Bay Beach. For months, sightings were uncertain. A photograph taken around day 450 showed a small, distant animal with dachshund-like ears and gave rescuers clearer evidence that Valerie was alive, according to ABC News Australia’s October 2025 retrospective.
How rescuers searched for Valerie
Kangala Wildlife Rescue used bait, familiar objects, monitoring cameras and a carefully planned trap, aiming to catch Valerie without disturbing other wildlife. Reports also describe cameras connected over 4G, a remotely triggered trap, drones and thermal imaging. The coverage does not identify a specific camera model or establish that any one device made the rescue possible. The Guardian’s account describes the search tools; the rescue depended on sustained work as well as monitoring and trapping.

The “fresh hope” headline described an unfolding search in April 2025. It is not a current missing-pet alert: Valerie was captured later that month and returned to her owners in May. ABC’s October 2025 feature provides the latest dated account here; it does not establish Valerie’s health or activities after that report.
