Rats really can learn to operate tiny cars—and in a small follow-up test, some chose to drive a longer route to food even when walking would have been faster. The finding comes from a University of Richmond behavioral-neuroscience project, not from a viral novelty experiment with toy cars.
The careful interpretation is more interesting than the headline: rats learned a demanding combination of motor control, navigation, visual targeting, and persistence. Rats raised in a more stimulating environment learned the task more effectively than rats kept in standard housing. Later, two of three rats chose the driving route over a shorter walking route to the same reward.
That suggests driving had become strongly motivating for those animals. It does not prove that rats experience human-like happiness, or that driving is a treatment for anxiety or depression.

What the “rat cars” actually were
The vehicles were custom laboratory devices, not miniature road-going cars and not commercially available toys. The original apparatus combined a modified programmable robot-car chassis with a clear plastic food container, an aluminum floor, and three horizontal copper bars.
When a rat stood on the aluminum plate and touched one of the copper bars, it completed an electrical circuit that activated the vehicle’s motor. Releasing contact stopped the vehicle. The arrangement allowed the researchers to train the animals to move toward a target and, with different movement sequences, steer from different starting positions.
In later versions, the researchers used a more durable construction and levers that allowed the rats to move forward and turn. The upgraded design made the task more like controlled navigation than simply activating a motor.
How the rats learned to drive
The training was gradual. Researchers first taught the rats to enter and tolerate the vehicle. They then shaped the behavior in stages:

- Entering the vehicle: The rats became comfortable inside the clear container.
- Contacting the controls: They learned that touching the conductive bars affected the vehicle.
- Moving forward: The researchers reinforced movement toward a visible target.
- Navigating toward a reward: The rats learned to travel to a target associated with a Froot Loop.
- Adapting to different starting positions: The animals used different movement sequences to reach the reward rather than repeating one fixed route.
This was not driving in the human sense. The rats were not choosing lanes, reading signs, or controlling a car with a steering wheel. They were learning an unusual operant task in which their body position and contact with controls produced movement in a particular direction.
Enriched rats learned the skill more effectively
The original study focused on whether an enriched living environment would help rats acquire a complex new motor skill.
The researchers used 11 young adult male Long-Evans rats. Five lived for approximately four months in an enriched environment before training, while six age-matched control rats lived in standard laboratory housing. Training began when the animals were about five months old.

| Group | Housing before training | What the comparison tested |
|---|---|---|
| Enriched group | A larger, more complex setting with multiple levels, group housing, exercise opportunities, and changing natural and artificial objects | Whether varied experience supported later learning |
| Control group | Standard single-level laboratory cages | Baseline acquisition under conventional housing |
The enriched-housing rats learned the driving task more robustly and were better at using novel routes to reach the reward. The standard-housed rats showed weaker task acquisition.

But this was a small study, and the authors called for larger experiments. It should be treated as intriguing evidence from one preclinical experiment, not as a universal rule about every rat or every type of enrichment.
Why would a rat choose to drive when walking was faster?
The most surprising observation came in a later choice test. A rat could either walk along a shorter route to reach a Froot Loop or turn toward the vehicle and drive along a longer route to the same reward.
Two of the three rats selected the longer driving route. In other words, the animals sometimes appeared to choose the activity itself rather than simply minimizing the distance to food.
That behavior is compatible with driving having become rewarding or motivationally valuable. It may reflect curiosity, learned positive associations, control over the environment, anticipation, or the satisfaction of performing a familiar skill. However, the test involved only three rats, and behavior cannot directly reveal whether an animal felt “joy” in the human sense.
A scientifically responsible summary is: some rats preferred a more effortful driving option over a more efficient walking option in a small choice test. That is evidence of a preference under those experimental conditions—not proof of a human-like emotional experience.
Did driving make the rats less stressed?
University of Richmond materials reported that driving training was associated with a healthier ratio of dehydroepiandrosterone, or DHEA, to corticosterone, a hormone measure related to stress physiology in rats. The researchers interpreted that pattern as consistent with improved stress resilience or a greater sense of control over the environment.

That interpretation is worth studying, but it should not be inflated. The experiment did not show that driving cures anxiety, depression, or other mental-health conditions. It was a small animal study measuring stress-related physiology, not a clinical trial.
Its potential value is more specific: a difficult, controllable task may provide a model for studying motivation, learning, resilience, neuroplasticity, and how experience changes the brain’s capacity to acquire new skills.

Many laboratory learning tasks are relatively simple: an animal presses a lever, follows a maze, or chooses between two locations. The rat-car task combines several abilities at once:
- motor control and coordinated body movement;
- learning the relationship between controls and vehicle movement;
- visual targeting;
- spatial navigation;
- flexibility when the starting position changes;
- persistence through repeated training sessions; and
- anticipation of a desired outcome.
That combination makes the task useful for asking how animals learn complex skills and whether previous experience changes their ability to solve unfamiliar problems. It also offers a model for studying animal-machine interaction and experience-dependent changes in behavior.
The project’s appeal outside the laboratory is not accidental. A rat behind the controls is an immediate, memorable image. Researchers can use that curiosity as an opening to discuss environmental enrichment, comparative cognition, positive emotion, and neuroplasticity—subjects that are harder to communicate through abstract graphs alone.
What the researchers mean by anticipation
The later research program also examined how rats respond to cues that predict positive events. In related work, some rats received signals that preceded rewards, while comparison groups received rewards without the same anticipatory structure or received neither the cue nor the reward.

This line of research asks whether anticipating a positive event changes motivation and emotional resilience. The question is broader than driving: the car is one challenging, controllable activity through which researchers can examine competence, expectation, and positive engagement.

Did the rats appear in a documentary?
Yes. The University of Richmond confirmed that the driving rats appeared in Netflix’s documentary series The Hidden Lives of Pets, in the episode titled “Intelligence.” The appearance helped extend the project’s science-communication role.
Streaming catalogs vary by country and can change over time, so check local availability before planning to watch. For a related viewing option, look for The Hidden Lives of Pets and its “Intelligence” episode rather than assuming that every region currently carries the series.

The bottom line on rats and tiny cars
Rats did learn to drive custom miniature vehicles, and rats raised with more environmental variety learned the demanding task more effectively than standard-housed controls. In a later, very small choice test, some rats even chose to drive a longer route instead of taking a shorter walk to the same food.
The strongest conclusion is not that rats have human-style joy. It is that they can acquire complex skills, show persistent interest in controllable activities, and make choices that suggest the activity itself had become valuable. That makes the tiny cars scientifically useful as well as irresistibly entertaining.
