Rice University engineering students have built a prototype vest that helps a blind dog detect obstacles through vibration. Cameras estimate what is in the dog’s path, onboard electronics process that information, and vibration motors signal the obstacle’s approximate direction and distance.

The device is an impressive example of haptic sensory substitution—but it is not an electronic guide dog, a proven medical treatment, or a documented retail product. The vest was developed for one Houston dog, Kunde, and was still being tested.

The short version

Kunde lost his sight because of advanced glaucoma. His owners, Grant Belton and AJ Price, approached Rice University’s Oshman Engineering Design Kitchen for help finding a less restrictive way for him to move around safely.

The resulting prototype, developed by the student team Kunde’s Friends, uses stereoscopic cameras near the dog’s head. The cameras view the environment from slightly different angles, allowing the system to estimate depth. A computer and custom motor-control circuit board then turn that information into localized vibrations in the vest.

Rice reported that the prototype could detect objects up to about 8 meters (26 feet) away and run for approximately two hours per battery charge. Those are reported prototype figures, not guaranteed performance specifications for every dog or environment.

How the vest works

The system’s basic signal path is:

Obstacle → stereo cameras → depth processing → motor-control board → localized vibration → dog adjusts course

1. Stereo cameras estimate distance

Stereoscopic cameras capture two views of the scene, much as human eyes receive slightly different perspectives. Software compares those views to estimate how far objects are from the dog.

The result is a depth map: information about the relative distance and position of features in front of the animal. The public description does not provide a complete camera model, frame rate, or detailed performance data.

2. Electronics interpret the information

A vision-processing computer analyzes the camera data. A custom printed circuit board controls the vest’s vibration motors and determines how the alerts should be delivered.

Rice also referred to open-source machine learning in describing the project, but the available announcement does not explain the model, training data, or any autonomous route-planning capability. Calling the vest an “AI guide” would therefore overstate what has been publicly documented.

3. Vibrations communicate direction and proximity

The vest contains linear resonant actuator motors. Vibrations in different areas of the garment indicate the obstacle’s approximate location, such as one side of the dog’s body. Stronger vibration is intended to indicate that the obstacle is closer.

This is vibrotactile, or haptic, sensory substitution: information normally obtained through vision is converted into touch. The vest does not appear to transmit a detailed map or human-like commands. Kunde must learn to associate vibration patterns with decisions such as changing direction or slowing down.

Why build a vest instead of using a protective halo?

Blind dogs can collide with furniture, walls, branches, and other objects. Rigid halo-style frames can help protect the face by contacting an obstacle before the dog does. Cones and other protective equipment may also be used in particular situations.

Those solutions do not necessarily tell a dog where an obstacle is before contact. Rice described the vest as an attempt to provide advance spatial information while allowing more freedom of movement than a bulky barrier might offer. That does not mean halos or other adaptations are unsuitable for every dog; many blind dogs adapt well with environmental changes, training, and time.

Designing a wearable for a real dog

A wearable that functions on a workbench must also survive a dog’s daily behavior. Rice reported that the students had to balance:

  • Low weight and comfortable weight distribution.
  • Flexibility that would not restrict walking or running.
  • Breathability in Houston’s hot climate.
  • Protection from rain and moisture.
  • Ruggedness against scratching, rolling, movement, and general activity.
  • Stable camera placement so the depth calculations remain useful.

These constraints are central to the project. A camera that detects an obstacle accurately is of limited value if the vest shifts, overheats, irritates the dog, or runs out of power during a walk.

What the prototype can reportedly do

Feature Reported detail Important qualification
Obstacle detection Up to about 8 m (26 ft) Reported prototype range; real-world performance may vary
Battery life About two hours Charging time, battery chemistry, and replacement details were not supplied
Sensing Stereoscopic cameras No complete camera specifications were published
Feedback Localized vibration Intensity and location vary with estimated proximity and position
Moisture protection Critical electronics were protected or waterproofed No formal IP rating was reported
Test subject Kunde The system was designed for one dog, not validated across breeds

Rice’s project report supplies the primary account of these specifications. New Atlas reported that the team had previously explored LiDAR and moved toward stereo cameras partly because cameras were less expensive. That comparison should be understood as reported project context, not an independent cost study proving that cameras are always the better choice.

What has not been proven

Rice said the final prototype was still undergoing testing with Kunde. The team hoped it would reduce collisions, but the available reporting does not provide:

  • A controlled clinical or engineering trial.
  • A published collision-reduction rate.
  • A sample of multiple dogs.
  • Peer-reviewed results.
  • False-positive or false-negative rates.
  • A documented training method or learning curve.
  • Long-term reliability or safety data.

Accordingly, the vest should be described as a promising assistive-technology prototype designed to help a particular dog—not as a clinically proven, autonomous, production-ready navigation system.

Potential limitations in everyday use

Several issues would need careful testing before a device like this could be trusted broadly:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Environmental conditions: Darkness, glare, rain, dirty lenses, foliage, clutter, and transparent surfaces can complicate camera-based depth estimation.
  • Missed hazards: Low objects, overhead obstacles, moving objects, or hazards outside the cameras’ view may not be detected.
  • False alarms: Constant or confusing vibration could overwhelm the dog or cause it to avoid safe paths.
  • Fit and alignment: Different body shapes, coats, head movements, and gait patterns could change camera geometry.
  • Learning: A dog may ignore, misunderstand, or dislike unfamiliar buzzing. The available sources do not say how quickly Kunde learned the signals.
  • Power and durability: A two-hour runtime may be suitable for testing but limiting for longer outings, while batteries and electronics add weight.
  • Human interpretation: Detecting an object is not the same as knowing whether the dog can safely pass to its left, right, or underneath it.

These are engineering and safety considerations, not documented failures of Kunde’s prototype.

Who created the vest?

The project was developed through Rice’s Oshman Engineering Design Kitchen by the interdisciplinary team Kunde’s Friends:

  • Adam Vuong: Bioengineering student and systems-integration contributor.
  • Cristiana De Sousa: Mechanical engineering student focused on physical design and integration.
  • Issy Tsai: Electrical engineering student who designed the motor-control printed circuit board.
  • Santiago Brent: Electrical engineering student who led stereo imaging and data processing.

The OEDK supports undergraduate teams developing prototypes for real-world problems, making Kunde’s vest an example of client-focused engineering rather than a mass-market product launch.

Is the blind-dog vest available to buy?

There is no documented retail product to purchase. The available Rice and related coverage identify the vest as a prototype developed for Kunde. They do not provide an official vendor, price, ordering page, consumer-support channel, or public release date. There is also no evidence in the supplied reporting that it became commercially available by 2026.

Generic smart collars, GPS trackers, and activity-monitoring vests should not be presented as substitutes. Those products typically track location or behavior; they do not necessarily provide camera-based, directional haptic obstacle warnings.

Could the idea help other dogs?

Possibly, but broader usefulness remains a future possibility. Rice said the lessons from Kunde’s system could eventually inform assistive technology for other animals, as well as rehabilitation or therapeutic devices for people.

A wider canine product would need adjustable sizing, reliable calibration, cleaning and repair procedures, battery safety, robust weather testing, and a training protocol. It would also need evaluation across dogs of different sizes, breeds, ages, temperaments, and causes of vision loss.

What owners can do for a blind dog now

Owners should not wait for this prototype or assume that electronic assistance makes unsupervised navigation safe. Practical steps may include:

  • Arrange a veterinary examination to identify the cause of vision loss and manage pain or disease.
  • Keep furniture, food, water, and bedding in consistent locations.
  • Block stairs, balconies, pools, and other dangerous drop-offs.
  • Use gates or barriers around hazards.
  • Add consistent tactile or scent cues to important areas.
  • Introduce household changes gradually.
  • Supervise outdoor activity, especially near traffic and unfamiliar terrain.
  • Ask a veterinarian, veterinary ophthalmologist, or qualified behavior professional for advice suited to the dog.

Many dogs adapt to blindness, but their needs differ. These measures are general safety guidance and do not replace veterinary care.

Bottom line

Rice’s haptic vest is a thoughtful prototype: stereo cameras estimate obstacles, custom electronics translate that information, and localized vibrations are intended to help Kunde alter his path. Its reported 8-meter detection range and two-hour battery life are encouraging early specifications, but they do not establish reliable performance for all dogs.

For now, the most accurate description is an experimental assistive device tailored to one blind dog—not a commercially available electronic guide dog.
