Both belong to the salmon family (Salmonidae), and their common names do not map neatly onto a single taxonomic group. “Salmon” usually refers to species in Salmo and Oncorhynchus; “trout” is used for species and life forms in Salmo, Oncorhynchus, and Salvelinus. Migration, spawning behavior, habitat, and several physical features are more dependable ways to tell them apart than color alone.
How salmon and trout are related
Salmon and trout are salmonids: members of the family Salmonidae adapted to generally cold, oxygen-rich water. NOAA describes the salmonid subfamily Salmoninae as containing three broad groups—Pacific salmon, true trout, and chars. The names are useful in everyday fishing and wildlife contexts, but they are not perfectly consistent biological divisions.
| Common name | Examples and scientific placement | What the name tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Salmon | Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar); Pacific salmon species in Oncorhynchus | A common-name grouping that includes several genera and different life histories |
| Trout | Brown trout (Salmo trutta); rainbow trout and its sea-run form, steelhead; other trout and char relatives | A practical common-name category, not one single genus |
USGS counts seven Pacific salmon species and one Atlantic salmon species. Steelhead is the migratory form of rainbow trout; it is sometimes counted as an additional “Pacific salmon” in popular lists, although its ability to survive spawning and return to sea differs from typical Pacific salmon.
Migration: the biggest practical difference
Typical salmon life cycle
Many salmon are anadromous. They hatch in freshwater, rear there as juveniles, transform into smolts, migrate through an estuary, grow in the ocean, and later home to their birth river to spawn. Atlantic salmon follow this pattern particularly clearly: freshwater, smolt, marine, and spawning stages use different habitats.

Trout have several life histories
Many trout spend their entire lives in streams, rivers, or lakes. Others migrate. Steelhead are ocean-going rainbow trout, while “sea trout” commonly means a migratory form of brown trout that enters estuaries or coastal water. The same species can therefore include resident and sea-run fish.
| Life-history form | Typical movement | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Resident | Remains in freshwater | Many stream and lake trout |
| Lake-run or potamodromous | Migrates within inland waters | Some trout populations moving between tributaries and lakes |
| Sea-run or anadromous | Grows in estuaries or the ocean, then returns to freshwater | Atlantic salmon, steelhead, sea trout |
Do all salmon die after spawning?
No. The statement is mainly accurate for typical Pacific salmon. They are generally semelparous: adults spawn once and die afterward.

Steelhead can survive spawning and return to the ocean. Atlantic salmon also can survive and spawn again, although repeat spawners are now uncommon. Many trout likewise survive more than one spawning season. Spawning strategy—not body color or the common name alone—is an important biological distinction.
How to tell a salmon from a trout
No single visual clue works for every species, location, or life stage. Salmon change appearance as they mature and migrate, and sea-run trout can become bright silver. Use several characters together.

Check the whole fish
- Body and head: compare body depth, overall proportions, and head shape rather than relying on size alone.
- Spots: note whether spotting is concentrated above the lateral line, extends onto the entire body, or appears on the tail fin; patterns vary among species.
- Jaw and teeth: jaw shape and tooth development can help, especially in mature fish, but change with age and breeding condition.
- Fins and tail: caudal-fin shape, fin structure, and markings provide additional clues.
- Scales: scale counts can support an identification when a specialist key calls for them.
- Setting: location, water type, migration season, and geographic range often narrow the possibilities more reliably than color.
- Life stage: juveniles and spawning adults may look very different from ocean-bright or lake-dwelling fish of the same species.
Juvenile Atlantic salmon and sea trout can be particularly difficult to separate. When a small fish has transformed markings or an unfamiliar combination of spots and fins, a regional identification key or fisheries professional is safer than a one-trait guess. NOAA’s Salmon, Trout, and Char reference is designed for salmonids encountered by anglers.
Habitat and spawning
Salmonids generally need cold, well-oxygenated water. Atlantic salmon spawn in gravel-bottom river reaches, where females create nests called redds. Parr use shallow nursery habitat; smolts move through estuaries; adults feed and mature at sea before returning upstream.

Brown trout are more flexible. Depending on the population, they use streams, larger rivers, lakes, estuaries, and some brackish coastal water. That habitat range is one reason “trout” cannot be treated as a strictly freshwater label.

- USGS reports that Chinook salmon can reach up to 58 inches (1.5 meters) and 126 pounds (57.2 kilograms). This is a maximum reported size, not a typical catch.
- NOAA reports that Atlantic salmon returning after two sea winters average about 28–30 inches and 8–12 pounds.
- A female Atlantic salmon lays an average of about 7,500 eggs in gravel redds.
- Only about 15–35% of Atlantic salmon eggs survive to the fry stage, according to NOAA’s species profile; survival varies with conditions.
Conservation status
Salmon and trout populations are highly dependent on connected, clean, cool waterways. Barriers to migration, warming water, sediment, pollution, overharvest, and loss of spawning habitat can affect different populations in different ways.

The Gulf of Maine distinct population segment of Atlantic salmon is listed as endangered under the U.S. Endangered Species Act. “Atlantic salmon” is therefore not a conservation status by itself: status depends on the population, location, and governing assessment.
Bottom line: salmon versus trout
Salmon and trout share a family but not one uniform lifestyle. Many salmon hatch in rivers, grow in the sea, and—especially Pacific salmon—die after spawning. Trout include resident freshwater fish and migratory forms such as steelhead and sea trout, and many can spawn repeatedly. For identification, combine anatomy, spots, fins, jaw, habitat, geography, and life stage rather than trusting a single color or marking.
