A Kemp’s ridley sea turtle died days after a September 29 fire at the Virginia Aquarium’s Darden Marine Animal Conservation Center (DMACC). The Aquarium said a necropsy indicated the turtle’s pre-existing injuries and illness caused its death, while additional tests to determine whether smoke exposure contributed were still pending in its October 2 update. All five sea turtles in rehabilitation were removed from the building the night of the fire.
What happened at the Virginia Aquarium?
Late Tuesday night, September 29, 2026, alarms prompted a response from the Virginia Beach Fire Department to a fire and significant smoke at the DMACC, the Virginia Aquarium said in its October 2 statement. The sprinkler system contained the fire. Smoke nevertheless caused extensive damage, affecting or contaminating virtually every space and system in the building. No staff members or emergency personnel were injured.
The DMACC serves as headquarters for the Aquarium’s Stranding Response Program and as an animal acquisition and quarantine facility. Damage to the center therefore disrupted a site used for both response operations and animal care.
Which animals were moved?
Staff and first responders removed all five sea turtles undergoing rehabilitation on the night of the fire. Aquarium staff moved the remaining fish and invertebrates out of the building over the following days. The Aquarium reported that some invertebrates were lost on the night of the fire.

Why did the Kemp’s ridley sea turtle die?
The turtle had stranded several weeks before the fire and was already compromised. It died days after the incident. According to the Aquarium’s October 2 update, a necropsy indicated that the turtle died from its original injuries and illness. Further tests were still pending to rule out smoke exposure as a contributing factor, so the Aquarium had not fully resolved whether smoke played any role.
Where are displaced animals being cared for?
As of October 2, the Aquarium said its damage assessment and recovery work were ongoing, and that staff and animals remained displaced. The duration of the displacement was unknown. The immediate priority was restoring the turtle rehabilitation systems and treatment area; until that work could be done, current stranded patients were being cared for under temporary conditions at the Aquarium’s main veterinary center.

How can the public help?
In its October 2 guidance, the Aquarium said it did not need supplies or donated items from the public at that time. It identified monetary donations to the Virginia Aquarium Foundation as a way to support the Stranding Response Program. That guidance reflects the Aquarium’s statement on that date and may change as recovery proceeds.

The DMACC fire affected a facility central to the Aquarium’s stranding operations. As historical context, the Aquarium’s April 2025 seasonal update reported that 77 cold-stunned sea turtles were documented from November 2024 to early 2025, with 27 live turtles admitted for rehabilitation. The Aquarium also said 17 turtles were transported for release in Florida and North Carolina after treatment during that season. Those are historical program figures, not counts of animals affected by the 2026 fire.
