Redness, swelling, squinting, frequent blinking, or discharge can signal conjunctivitis or another eye problem in a cat. But appearance alone cannot confirm an infection: irritation, injury, a corneal ulcer, and other eye conditions can cause similar signs. Eye discomfort with discharge warrants veterinary assessment.
What signs can point to an eye problem?
Conjunctivitis—often called pink eye—is inflammation of the membrane lining the eyelids and covering the outer surface of the eyeball. It can affect one or both eyes. Watch for:
- Redness or swelling of the conjunctiva or third eyelid.
- Frequent blinking, squinting, or reluctance to open the eye.
- Discharge that may be watery or thicker and dark; it can also appear cloudy, yellow, or greenish.
- Excessive tearing, rubbing at the eye, or sensitivity to light.
These signs are consistent with conjunctivitis, but they do not show whether the cause is infectious or identify which condition is responsible. Cornell Feline Health Center and VCA Animal Hospitals describe overlapping symptoms and causes.
Why symptoms alone cannot confirm an infection
Viruses and bacteria can cause conjunctivitis. Cornell lists feline herpesvirus, calicivirus, Chlamydophila, and Mycoplasma among common infectious causes. Dust, airborne chemicals, plants, foreign material, and injury can also irritate or affect the eye; other eye diseases may look similar or contribute. A discharge color or a red appearance is not enough to diagnose a bacterial infection or choose treatment. Merck Veterinary Manual notes that the conjunctiva’s appearance alone may not establish the cause.

When cloudiness or light sensitivity may mean corneal damage
A cloudy-looking cornea—the clear front surface of the eye—along with pronounced light sensitivity, squinting, rubbing, discharge, or apparent trouble seeing can occur with a corneal ulcer. Ulcers may follow trauma, trapped debris, caustic exposure, or infection, including feline herpesvirus. A veterinarian can use fluorescein dye to reveal damaged corneal tissue. Because corneal injury and other serious disorders can threaten the eye, cloudiness, vision difficulty, trauma, or substantial pain calls for particular concern and veterinary attention. Cornell’s corneal ulcer guidance describes these signs and the staining test.
What to tell the veterinarian
When arranging an assessment, note whether one or both eyes are affected, when the signs began, what the discharge looks like, and whether your cat is squinting, rubbing, light-sensitive, or having trouble seeing. Mention any possible injury or exposure to debris, chemicals, or plants. These observations help describe the problem, but cannot replace an examination.

Depending on the history and findings, the veterinarian may examine the eye, stain the cornea with fluorescein, measure tear production or eye pressure, or collect conjunctival scrapings or other samples. Testing is selected for the suspected cause; the visible appearance by itself may not provide the answer. Merck and VCA describe these diagnostic approaches.

Contact a veterinarian when your cat has eye discomfort and discharge. The signs can have several causes, and some require different treatment. The references do not establish one safe waiting period for every combination of symptoms; do not rely on a fixed delay, particularly if the cornea looks cloudy, vision seems affected, there has been trauma, or your cat appears to be in substantial pain.

Treatment depends on the cause and may involve medication applied to the eye, systemic medication, or supportive care. Antibiotics do not treat every cause. Do not use leftover prescription eye medicine or human eye medication, and do not choose an antibiotic based on discharge color. A medicine prescribed for a previous episode may not help this one and could be harmful. If a veterinarian diagnoses a corneal ulcer, follow their instructions to prevent rubbing; a protective collar may be recommended in that specific situation, but it is not an eye-infection treatment. VCA’s conjunctivitis guidance cautions against reusing medication, and Cornell discusses collar use for some ulcers.
