Xiphodracon goldencapensis, nicknamed the “Sword Dragon of Dorset,” was a marine reptile that lived in the Early Jurassic seas off Britain. It was an ichthyosaur—not a dinosaur—but it shared the ocean with dinosaurs living on land. The nearly complete fossil, found near Golden Cap in Dorset, gives scientists an unusually clear look at a rare stage in ichthyosaur evolution.
What is the Sword Dragon of Dorset?
Xiphodracon goldencapensis is a newly named ichthyosaur species. Ichthyosaurs were air-breathing, ocean-going reptiles whose streamlined bodies, fins and large eyes made them look superficially like modern dolphins, although they were unrelated to dolphins and were not dinosaurs.
The genus name combines the idea of a sword with the traditional “sea dragon” nickname long associated with ichthyosaurs. The only formally described specimen is the holotype ROM VP52596.
Where was the fossil found?
Dorset fossil collector Chris Moore discovered the specimen in 2001 near Golden Cap on the Jurassic Coast. It came from the Charmouth Mudstone Formation, on the coast between Charmouth and Seatown. The fossil was later acquired by the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) in Toronto, which is its current repository and planned display venue.

Fossil collecting has taken place along the Lyme Regis–Charmouth area for more than 200 years. That long history makes a new, nearly complete ichthyosaur from these rocks especially significant.
How big was it, and what did it look like?
| Feature | What scientists report |
|---|---|
| Preserved length | 218 cm for ROM VP52596 |
| Estimated total length | About 3.0 metres |
| Snout | Long, narrow and sword-like |
| Eye socket | Unusually large |
| Preservation | Almost complete and preserved in three dimensions |
| Age | Early Jurassic, Pliensbachian, about 193–184 million years ago |
Its elongated snout and large eye socket are among its most striking traits. The technical description also identifies a previously unrecorded lacrimal bone with prong-like projections and unusual anatomy around the external nostril. These details help distinguish the species from other ichthyosaurs rather than merely adding visual oddities.
What did Xiphodracon eat?
Researchers infer that it probably hunted fish and squid. The specimen may preserve traces of its last meal, although those remains do not establish a complete diet or a precise hunting method.

Its large eye may have helped it detect prey in dim or deeper water, but the fossil alone cannot show exactly how it used that feature. The sword-like snout likewise indicates a specialised skull shape without proving a single feeding technique.
Was the animal injured or attacked?
Yes. The skeleton records serious health problems during life. Some teeth and limb bones are malformed, evidence consistent with injury or disease. Damage to the skull is consistent with a bite from a much larger predator, probably another ichthyosaur.
That interpretation identifies a plausible attack, not a witnessed cause of death. The bones show the physical effects; they cannot reveal whether the bite immediately killed the animal or occurred during an earlier encounter.

Why is this fossil important?
The Pliensbachian record is unusually poor
Pliensbachian ichthyosaurs are rare. The authors describe Xiphodracon as the most complete ichthyosaur known from this interval, making its anatomy unusually valuable for comparison.
It pinpoints an evolutionary turnover
Ichthyosaur diversity was higher in the preceding Sinemurian and changed again by the later Toarcian. The anatomy and evolutionary position of Xiphodracon show that a major reshaping of ichthyosaur diversity occurred during the Pliensbachian. The fossil helps establish when that turnover happened; scientists still do not know why.

It fills a gap in Jurassic sea history
The three-dimensional skeleton preserves information that flattened or fragmentary fossils often lose. It therefore contributes both to ichthyosaur evolutionary studies and to reconstructions of life in Britain’s Jurassic seas, including predator interactions, disease and the range of body forms present at the time.

What is the “Gonzo” specimen?
The Charmouth Heritage Coast Centre displays a second specimen nicknamed “Gonzo,” also found by Chris Moore. Researchers consider it to represent the same species as Xiphodracon goldencapensis.
Gonzo preserves a detailed sequence of what happened after death:
- The carcass entered a post-mortem “float and bloat” phase.
- A newly recognised six-gilled shark scavenged it.
- Large ostracods fed on the remains.
- The animal descended head-first into sediment.
- The front half retained rare three-dimensional soft-tissue and skin or musculature impressions.
- Currents and scavengers dispersed the exposed rear half.
This preservation records an ecosystem process, not just the animal’s skeleton: floating, scavenging, sinking and burial all left evidence in the rock.

Who studied and named it?
- Dean Lomax led the work and is an ichthyosaur specialist.
- Judy Massare, an ichthyosaur expert at the State University of New York at Brockport, co-authored the study.
- Erin Maxwell, an ichthyosaur expert at the State Museum of Natural History Stuttgart, co-authored the study.
- Chris Moore discovered both the holotype and the Gonzo specimen.
- The Royal Ontario Museum houses the holotype.
Dean Lomax has called the fossil a “missing piece of the ichthyosaur puzzle.” Judy Massare said it helps determine when the major diversity change occurred, while Erin Maxwell emphasised its value for understanding Jurassic seas and ichthyosaur evolution.
Where can people see it?
The holotype is held by the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto, which has identified it as a planned display subject. The reviewed information does not establish a public launch date or current ticket arrangement. The Gonzo specimen is displayed at the Charmouth Heritage Coast Centre in Dorset.
