Jason Moore won the 2023 Comedy Wildlife Photography Awards overall with “Air Guitar Roo,” a photograph of a female western grey kangaroo in a flower-filled field near Perth, Australia. The image also won the Creatures of the Land category. Other award-winning entries included a diving heron, a Singaporean otter and a pair of greenfinches in Poland.

Who won the 2023 Comedy Wildlife Photography Awards?

Australian photographer Jason Moore took the overall prize with “Air Guitar Roo.” The photograph shows a female western grey kangaroo with one paw raised in a field of yellow flowers. ABC News reported that Moore made the image in August 2021, two years before it won the 2023 awards. Moore said the pose made him smile and that he knew he had captured something special. The photograph also earned the Creatures of the Land category award.

The playful title describes how the pose looks; it does not establish what the kangaroo was doing or intending. Moore’s reported approach was to get down to the animals’ eye level.

Who were the other category winners?

Nature TTL’s detailed results name these other winning entries. Award labels are given as that report presents them:

Award Photographer and entry Subject and location
Creatures of the Air Vittorio Ricci, “Unexpected Plunge” A striated heron at Zimanga Private Game Reserve, South Africa
Under Water Otter Kwek, “Otter Ballerina” A smooth-coated otter in Singapore
Junior and People’s Choice Jacek Stankiewicz, “Dispute” Greenfinches in Białowieża Forest, Poland
Amazing Internet Portfolio Timea Ambrus, a four-image sequence A ground squirrel
Video Award Lily Bernau, “Too Cold” A penguin apparently reluctant to enter the sea

Nature TTL describes six category winners and identifies Stankiewicz’s Junior entry as the People’s Choice winner as well. It reports this was the first time a junior entry won People’s Choice. The report’s labels overlap, so it is clearest to retain its wording rather than assume a different count of distinct awards.

Which entries were Highly Commended?

Nature TTL reports that ten other entries received Highly Commended recognition. Among those named in coverage were John Blumenkamp’s “Monday Blahs,” featuring a great gray owl, and Tzahi Finkelstein’s “The Happy Turtle,” showing a dragonfly on a turtle. These are examples, not the full list.

How large was the contest, and what does it support?

ABC News and Nature TTL report that the 2023 contest received 5,300 entries from 85 countries. Nature TTL gives the entrant count separately as 1,842; entries and entrants are not interchangeable figures. Global News reports that the awards were founded in 2015 by professional photographers Paul Joynson-Hicks and Tom Sullam.

Global News also reports that licensing income from photographs supports grassroots conservation organizations and that 2023 proceeds were to go to the Whitley Fund for Nature. That is a report about licensing proceeds, not evidence that the contest is itself a charity or that every sale or licensing payment goes to conservation. The available reporting does not establish a total amount raised or a quantified conservation impact.

What did the organizers and photographer say?

Co-founder Tom Sullam connected Stankiewicz’s People’s Choice win to the contest’s aim of welcoming younger photographers. Nature TTL quotes him: “We want more juniors to enter, we want to take our conservation message and our love of photography to the younger generation and this result proves that young photographers have as much chance of winning as anybody else.”

Moore’s response to the winning image, as quoted by ABC News, was: “When I saw this Roo striking the air guitar pose, it immediately brought a smile to my face, and I knew that I had captured something really special.”
