On 22 July 2003, British Antarctic Survey marine biologist Kirsty Margot Brown was pulled underwater by a leopard seal while snorkelling near Rothera Research Station on the West Antarctic Peninsula. Colleagues brought her to a boat and attempted CPR for about an hour, but she died. The British Antarctic Territory coroner recorded the cause as drowning due to a leopard-seal attack and classified the death as accidental.
What happened to Kirsty Brown?
Brown was 28 and snorkelling at a study site in the bay next to Rothera Research Station. She was with a buddy and was not reported to have provoked the seal. The British Antarctic Survey’s statement, issued on 23 July 2003, said she was “attacked without warning” while snorkelling. The seal pulled her underwater; colleagues recovered her to a boat and performed CPR for about an hour, but they could not revive her.
The inquest in the British Antarctic Territory recorded her death as accidental, with drowning due to a leopard-seal attack as the cause. The animal was identified as a leopard seal (Hydrurga leptonyx).
Was it the only fatal leopard-seal attack?
The careful answer is that Brown’s death was the only known case in the reviewed record of a leopard seal making surface physical contact with an unseen person and then behaving predatively in an encounter that led to death. That distinction comes from a peer-reviewed paper in Antarctic Science; it does not establish a population-wide attack rate or prove that no unrecorded incident has ever occurred.

The British Antarctic Survey’s post-incident review examined more than 30 years of human–leopard-seal interactions using questionnaires, interviews and observational records. The 2006 study included over 180 questionnaires and interviews. Its findings put the fatal encounter in context: it was a real and exceptionally rare event, not evidence that leopard seals commonly hunt people.
Are leopard seals dangerous to divers and snorkellers?
They are large wild predators, so an encounter deserves caution, but the recorded pattern does not suggest that an attack on a swimmer is typical. In the BAS review, people generally described in-water encounters as curious approaches, often near the surface. The Natural History Museum’s summary similarly characterizes most in-water encounters as curiosity, while noting greater concern at the ice edge.

Leopard seals’ diets vary seasonally. The Natural History Museum notes that they normally feed on fish and krill in summer, and on seals and penguins in winter. That context helps explain why a seal’s response can differ by setting and available prey; it does not make any encounter predictable or safe.
Does the ice edge make an encounter more dangerous?
The BAS review found that location had the greatest influence on a leopard seal’s response. Encounters at the ice edge, where seals seek prey, produced the highest response levels in the reviewed observations. That is a relative finding about observed responses—not a numerical estimate of the chance of an attack.

| Encounter setting | What the reviewed evidence describes |
|---|---|
| Open water | In-water encounters were generally described as curiosity, often near the surface (BAS review). |
| Ice edge | Responses were strongest in this setting, where leopard seals seek prey (BAS review). |
| Brown’s encounter near Rothera | The seal was unseen before surface contact; the interaction became predatory and ended in her death (peer-reviewed Antarctic Science paper). |
The review does not provide a predictive risk percentage, and the reported difference between settings should not be read as a guarantee that open-water encounters are harmless or that every ice-edge encounter is aggressive.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why is Brown’s case treated as exceptional?
In the record assessed by the peer-reviewed paper, Brown’s case stood apart because the seal made physical contact with a person who had not seen it at the surface, then displayed predatory behavior leading to death. That sequence matters: it is more specific than saying simply that leopard seals sometimes approach people underwater. The BAS review’s broader collection of interactions described a different usual pattern—curiosity in the water, with the strongest responses concentrated around the ice edge.
