There is no single best dog food for weight management: the right choice depends on your dog’s target weight, calorie needs, hunger, age, activity, and health. For substantial weight loss—often around 10–15% or more of body weight—or when a medical condition affects food choice, ask your veterinarian to set the plan and decide whether a therapeutic diet is appropriate. The nine foods below include both veterinary therapeutic diets and retail formulas, which are not interchangeable.

Quick comparison

Food Best for Calories Type
Hill’s Prescription Diet Metabolic Overall therapeutic weight loss 3,071 kcal/kg; varies by product format Veterinary therapeutic
Royal Canin Satiety Support Dogs that beg between meals 2,911 kcal/kg; 224 kcal/cup Veterinary therapeutic

The 9 best dog foods for weight management

1. Hill’s Prescription Diet Metabolic — Best overall therapeutic diet

Best for: Dogs that need planned weight loss or long-term weight maintenance after losing weight.

Hill’s Prescription Diet Metabolic combines calorie control with a fiber blend intended to improve satiety. It also contains L-carnitine, a nutrient commonly included in weight-management diets to support fat metabolism and lean tissue. Hill’s reports that 96% of dogs in its cited at-home study lost weight within two months.

#1 Best Overall
Purina ONE Plus Healthy Weight Dry Dog Food, Real Turkey, 31.1 lb Bag
  • Weight control dog food made with high-quality protein sources, including real turkey as the number 1 ingredient, to promote strong muscles including a healthy heart
  • Four antioxidant sources in this wholesome dog food for immune support for dogs, and natural glucosamine sources support dog joint health
  • Deliciously crunchy dog kibble and tender meaty morsels combine for a taste and texture dogs love and work with added calcium for a premium dog food that supports strong teeth and healthy gums
  • Purina ONE Plus Healthy Weight High-Protein Formula dog food features omega-6 fatty acids, vitamins and minerals to support a shiny, healthy skin and coat for dogs
  • Adult dog food is crafted in Purina-owned U.S. facilities and supplies 100 percent complete and balanced nutrition for adult dogs with 0 percent fillers, meaning every ingredient has a purpose

This is a veterinary therapeutic food, not a general-purpose diet to start without professional input. Your veterinarian should determine the daily amount and monitor progress. Hill’s recommends transitioning over at least seven days and feeding the recommended Prescription Diet foods exclusively for best results.

2. Royal Canin Satiety Support Weight Management — Best for dogs that beg

Best for: Overweight or obese adult dogs that remain hungry between meals.

Persistent begging can make a calorie-controlled plan difficult to follow. Royal Canin Satiety Support is veterinary-exclusive and uses a high-fiber formula designed to increase fullness. Its listed analysis includes 28% minimum crude protein, 7.5% minimum crude fat, and 11.2% minimum crude fiber. It provides 2,911 kcal/kg, or 224 kcal per cup as fed.

Royal Canin reports that 97% of dogs in its cited study lost weight over three months, and begging decreased in 83% of dogs during weight loss. These are company-reported study results, not a guarantee for every dog, but the formula is a reasonable option to discuss when hunger is the main obstacle.

3. Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets OM Select Blend Overweight Management — Best veterinary alternative

Best for: Dogs needing a prescription diet with calorie control and a relatively high-protein profile.

Purina’s veterinary product guide lists OM Select Blend Overweight Management Canine Formula for obesity-related weight loss and weight maintenance. It is formulated to meet AAFCO nutrient levels for adult-maintenance dogs and is intended for nutritional management of a condition diagnosed by a veterinarian.

Rank #2
Purina Pro Plan Weight Management Dry Dog Food, Chicken & Rice, 34 lb Bag
  • High-protein weight management dog food with real chicken to support lean muscle mass.
  • Contains 15 percent less fat than Purina Pro Plan adult dog food for weight control.
  • Fortified with dog probiotics to support digestive and immune health and balanced microbiome
  • Crunchy kibble and tender shredded pieces for texture dogs love.
  • Complete and balanced dry dog food for adult dogs needing healthy weight support.

Check the current bag label for calorie content, feeding directions, and availability before buying. Public product-guide information should not replace the current label or your veterinarian’s prescribed amount. Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets are available by prescription.

4. Hill’s Science Diet Adult Perfect Weight — Best non-prescription option for healthy adult dogs

Best for: Mildly overweight, less-active, neutered, or weight-gain-prone adult dogs that do not need a therapeutic diet.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This retail formula provides 3,189 kcal/kg, or 298 kcal per cup, and uses a high-protein, high-fiber profile with L-carnitine and coconut oil. Hill’s markets it for visible weight-loss results within 10 weeks. Feeding tests using AAFCO procedures substantiate complete and balanced nutrition for adult-maintenance dogs.

It is not intended for puppies or pregnant or nursing dogs. “Perfect Weight” also does not mean the feeding chart is automatically correct: portions still need to be adjusted to your dog’s body condition and rate of weight change.

5. Royal Canin Large Weight Care — Best for large dogs prone to weight gain

Best for: Adult and mature large-breed dogs with an ideal weight of about 56–100 pounds that tend to put on excess weight.

Royal Canin Large Weight Care combines adapted protein, fiber for fullness, and L-carnitine. It provides 3,182 kcal/kg, or 229 kcal per cup, and is formulated to meet AAFCO nutrient levels for adult-maintenance dogs. Royal Canin reports that 89% of slightly overweight large dogs in its cited study lost weight within two months.

Rank #3
Hill's Science Diet Adult Perfect Weight Dry Dog Food
  • Breakthrough formula made to positively impact the unique cell function of overweight pets, and support healthy metabolism and body weight
  • Safe and effective weight loss with visible results within 10 weeks
  • Made with natural ingredients
  • Made in the USA with global ingredients you can trust
  • Hill's Pet Nutrition is the US Veterinarians' #1 recommended brand

This is a retail maintenance formula for weight-prone large dogs, not a replacement for a therapeutic diet when substantial weight loss is required. VCA guidance recommends veterinary support for dogs that need to lose roughly 10–15% or more of their body weight. This is also not a universal choice for small breeds, puppies, or dogs with medical conditions requiring a specialized diet.

6. Purina Pro Plan Weight Management Chicken & Rice — Best widely available dry food

Best for: Overweight or less-active adult dogs whose veterinarian considers a retail formula appropriate.

This complete-and-balanced adult food provides 3,535 kcal/kg, or 364 kcal per cup. Purina describes its protein-to-fat ratio as supporting muscle maintenance during weight loss and says it contains 15% less fat than the comparable Pro Plan Complete Essentials Chicken & Rice formula.

The relatively high calories per cup make accurate measuring particularly important. A “weight management” label does not allow unlimited portions. Purina lists 6-, 18-, and 34-pound bags and recommends changing foods gradually over seven to 10 days to reduce digestive upset.

7. Purina Pro Plan Adult 7+ Weight Management Shredded Blend — Best for senior dogs

Best for: Dogs aged seven and older that need weight control alongside senior-oriented nutritional support.

This formula provides 3,391 kcal/kg, or 354 kcal per cup, and is marketed to help maintain muscle during weight loss. It includes glucosamine and EPA for joint health and mobility, plus prebiotic fiber, omega-6 fatty acids, vitamin A, and antioxidants. Chicken is the first listed ingredient, and Purina says the formula contains 15% less fat than its comparable Pro Plan senior formula.

Rank #4
Purina Pro Plan Weight Management Dry Dog Food, Chicken & Rice, 18 lb Bag
  • High-protein weight management dog food with real chicken to support lean muscle mass.
  • Contains 15 percent less fat than Purina Pro Plan adult dog food for weight control.
  • Fortified with dog probiotics to support digestive and immune health.
  • Includes dog gut health probiotics for a balanced microbiome.
  • Crunchy kibble and tender shredded pieces for texture dogs love.

Age alone does not determine a dog’s calorie target. A senior dog may be overweight, underweight, losing muscle, arthritic, or affected by kidney, thyroid, or other disease. Have your veterinarian assess body condition and muscle condition before switching foods.

8. Eukanuba Fit Body Weight Control Medium Breed — Best for active medium-size dogs

Best for: Adult medium-breed dogs with an ideal weight of approximately 24–54 pounds that need weight control while remaining active.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Eukanuba says this food contains 39% less fat than its Adult Medium Breed formula. It includes L-carnitine and is designed to support lean muscle and joints; chicken is the first listed ingredient. The food provides 3,473 kcal/kg, or 254 kcal per cup, and is complete and balanced for medium-breed adult dogs aged 12 months and older.

Size-specific nutrition matters. This formula should not be treated as a general choice for small, large, or giant breeds, puppies, or pregnant or nursing dogs.

9. IAMS Proactive Health Healthy Weight Adult — Best budget-oriented retail pick

Best for: Healthy adult dogs that need a mainstream weight-management food at an accessible retail price.

IAMS Healthy Weight Adult uses chicken as the first ingredient and includes L-carnitine, fiber, and prebiotics. IAMS says it contains 17% less fat than IAMS Minichunks and is complete and balanced for adult dogs without requiring added vitamin or mineral supplements.

How to choose the right food

Choose a veterinary therapeutic diet when:

  • Your dog is obese or needs to lose roughly 10–15% or more of its body weight.
  • Your dog becomes very hungry during calorie restriction.
  • Limited mobility makes gradual weight loss especially important.
  • Your dog has diabetes, joint disease, digestive disease, or another condition that affects food selection.
  • You need a veterinarian to calculate calories and monitor weight, muscle, or an associated illness.

Therapeutic diets are designed to provide adequate vitamins, minerals, protein, and other nutrients at restricted calorie levels. Simply feeding much less of an ordinary adult food can reduce calories but also make it harder to provide complete nutrition.

Choose a retail weight-management food when:

  • Your dog is only mildly overweight or tends to gain weight.
  • Your veterinarian confirms that an adult-maintenance formula is appropriate.
  • You can measure the daily portion accurately.
  • You will count treats, dental chews, table food, supplements, and food used for medication.

Feeding rules that determine whether the diet works

  1. Establish a target with your veterinarian. Breed averages are not enough. Body-condition scoring is more useful; the WSAVA nine-point chart generally considers 4–5/9 ideal.
  2. Measure food by weight. A kitchen gram scale is more reliable than a cup. Kibble size, shape, and how tightly it settles can make cup measurements inconsistent; VCA recommends weighing portions.
  3. Use calories, not just scoops. Compare the current food’s kcal/kg or kcal/cup with the replacement food. The same volume can provide very different calories.
  4. Keep extras to about 10% of daily calories. If treats are frequent, reserve part of the daily food ration for training instead of adding treats on top, as VCA advises.
  5. Transition gradually. Follow the manufacturer’s schedule—typically four to 10 days, and at least seven days for Hill’s Metabolic—to reduce vomiting, diarrhea, or food refusal.
  6. Track the response. Rechecks every two to four weeks during active weight loss allow the plan to be adjusted before progress stalls; VCA recommends reassessment as a dog’s weight changes.
  7. Expect gradual loss. Veterinary guidance commonly starts around 0.5–2% of body weight per week, but your veterinarian may set a different individualized goal. VCA notes that the rate should be monitored to help avoid excessive loss of lean muscle.

Food is only part of the plan. Controlled exercise, puzzle feeders, scheduled meals, and replacing high-calorie treats with small pieces of the dog’s regular food can help. Do not increase exercise sharply in a very overweight dog or one with painful joints without veterinary advice.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming low fat automatically means weight loss. Total calories, portion size, nutrient adequacy, and the dog’s response matter more than fat percentage alone.
  • Following the bag chart blindly. Feeding charts are starting points. Age, activity, environment, neuter status, health, and body condition change calorie needs.
  • Using a retail food for severe obesity without guidance. A retail “healthy weight” food may be suitable for prevention or mild excess weight but not for every dog that needs major weight loss.
  • Cutting ordinary food dramatically. A very small portion may not supply enough protein, vitamins, or minerals; VCA cautions that severe restriction of ordinary adult-maintenance food can cause nutrient deficiencies.
  • Trying to make weight disappear quickly. The goal is steady fat loss while preserving muscle, not the fastest possible drop on the scale.

If your dog gains weight despite measured portions, loses weight unexpectedly, seems unusually hungry or thirsty, becomes lethargic, or loses muscle, arrange a veterinary examination rather than switching foods repeatedly.

FAQ

What is the best dog food for weight loss?

For substantial or medically supervised weight loss, a veterinary therapeutic diet such as Hill’s Prescription Diet Metabolic, Royal Canin Satiety Support, or Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets OM may be appropriate. For a mildly overweight otherwise healthy adult dog, a retail food such as Hill’s Science Diet Adult Perfect Weight may be suitable. The best choice depends on a veterinarian-set calorie target and your dog’s health.

Can I feed my dog less of its regular food to make it lose weight?

Do not make a large reduction without veterinary guidance. Ordinary adult-maintenance food may not provide enough essential nutrients when fed in a sharply restricted portion. A properly formulated weight-management diet can provide appropriate nutrition at a controlled calorie level.

How much weight should a dog lose each week?

Veterinary guidance commonly begins around 0.5–2% of body weight per week, but the safe rate depends on the individual dog. Your veterinarian should monitor the trend and adjust calories if weight loss is too slow, too fast, or accompanied by muscle loss. VCA’s weight-reduction guidance discusses setting and monitoring an individualized plan.

Are treats allowed during a dog weight-loss plan?

Yes, but treats and other extras should generally make up no more than about 10% of daily calories, a target also recommended in VCA’s guidance. Weighing the daily food allowance and using some of it as training rewards is often easier than adding unmeasured treats.

The Bottom Line

For structured weight loss, start with your veterinarian rather than a marketing claim. Hill’s Prescription Diet Metabolic is a strong overall therapeutic option, Royal Canin Satiety Support is particularly useful when begging is a problem, and Purina OM is another prescription option. For healthy adult dogs that are mildly overweight or prone to gain, consider an appropriate retail formula such as Hill’s Perfect Weight, Royal Canin Large Weight Care, Purina Pro Plan Weight Management, Eukanuba Fit Body, or IAMS Healthy Weight. Whichever food you choose, weigh portions, count extras, and reassess your dog regularly.
