Safety also matters: reptiles can carry Salmonella even when they look healthy, and CDC says reptiles are unsuitable in settings with children under five.
Are pet lizards allowed at school?
There is no blanket yes-or-no answer for every school. CDC advises checking local regulations and school policies before bringing animals into schools. Ask the teacher or school administration for the written policy, and confirm whether it allows a student’s personal lizard or only school-approved animals for educational activities.
Rules can vary by district, school type, and jurisdiction. For example, Indiana’s 2025 school guide says reptiles may be allowed in classrooms for educational purposes under state rules. It also says schools that allow animals must have a written policy covering permitted animals, when and how long they may be present, housekeeping, and allergy concerns. What to ask before making plans
- Does the policy allow a student’s personal pet, or only an approved animal brought for an educational purpose?
- What approval, visit date, duration, and advance notice does the school require?
- Are children under five present, and are there allergies, asthma, immune-compromise concerns, or other needs the school must consider?
- Who will supervise contact, handwashing, containment, and cleaning?
- Where can the enclosure be kept away from food and drink areas?
- Who is responsible for the lizard’s care on school days, weekends, holidays, and longer breaks?
- What are the school’s procedures for a bite, scratch, illness, or escape?
The school must answer questions about its own policy and local requirements; general health guidance cannot establish permission for a particular campus.

Is it safe for children to be around a school lizard?
Reptiles can carry Salmonella on their bodies and in their environments, including tank water. People can be exposed not only by touching a lizard but also by handling its food, waste, enclosure, or equipment. A lizard that looks clean and healthy can still carry germs. CDC says children younger than five should not touch reptiles or their environments because they are at higher risk of serious Salmonella illness and hospitalization. Its school guidance says reptiles are not suitable for settings with children under five. CDC, “Reptiles and Amphibians”.
Safeguards the school should arrange
- Keep the lizard in a secure, designated enclosure or localized area; do not let it roam freely.
- Have an adult supervise any interaction and make sure children know not to touch the animal unless the school has approved it.
- Keep the lizard, its food, and all habitat equipment away from places where food is prepared, stored, served, or eaten. Do not use food-preparation sinks to clean animal equipment.
- Have everyone wash hands with soap and water immediately after touching the lizard, its food, waste, enclosure, or equipment.
- Clean and disinfect areas where the animal has been, following the school’s procedures.
- If soap and running water are not available, CDC’s school guidance allows children to use hand sanitizer and then wash with soap and water as soon as possible.
These precautions reduce exposure but do not make a reptile appropriate for every classroom. The school should consider the needs and ages of the children and staff before approving a visit. CDC, “Resources for Schools and Daycares”.

How should you prepare if the school approves?
Agree with the school on the animal’s location, who may interact with it, adult supervision, handwashing, food-area separation, and who will clean the enclosure and any affected surfaces. The lizard needs suitable care throughout the school calendar, not just during the visit: plan for an appropriate habitat, feeding, routine veterinary care, weekends, holidays, and longer breaks. CDC recommends routine veterinary care for pet reptiles.
Choose an enclosed habitat that meets the needs of that particular lizard and the school’s requirements. The cited school guidance does not specify a terrarium size, brand, or transport device, so do not assume that a particular product is suitable for every species—or that buying an enclosure grants permission to bring the animal.

If the lizard is sick or stressed, contact a veterinarian rather than bringing it to school. CDC notes that a sick or stressed animal may shed more harmful germs and may be more likely to bite. CDC school guidance; CDC reptile guidance.

Wash the wound immediately with warm, soapy water. Follow the school’s incident and parent-notification procedures.
