The World’s Oldest Animal Fossil? Meet the Tiny Sponge Claim From 890 Million Years Ago

A microscopic network in 890-million-year-old Canadian reef rock may be the oldest animal fossil, but the sponge identification is still disputed. Here is what the evidence shows—and why about 571-million-year-old Newfoundland fossils remain the broadly accepted benchmark.

The oldest proposed animal fossil is a microscopic branching network in 890-million-year-old reef rock from Canada’s Northwest Territories. Geologist Elizabeth C. Turner argues that it is the fossilized internal scaffold of a sponge. That interpretation remains disputed; the oldest animal remains regarded as broadly secure are about 571 million years old and come from Newfoundland.

What was found in the Canadian reef rock?

Elizabeth C. Turner examined ancient microbial-reef rocks from the Northwest Territories and found branching networks of crystalline tubes under a microscope. The material is not a preserved, whole animal. It is a three-dimensional pattern inside rock that Turner says resembles the flexible internal scaffolding of modern “horny” sponges, whose framework is made from the collagen-like protein spongin.

The rocks are about 890 million years old, according to the 2021 report in Nature. That places the structures hundreds of millions of years before the Cambrian period, when the conventional animal fossil record becomes much richer.

Turner summarized the implication this way: “If I’m right, animals emerged long, long before the first appearance of traditional animal fossils.”

Is this really the world’s oldest animal fossil?

Not as an uncontested record. The Canadian structures are a leading proposal for the oldest animal evidence, but other explanations remain possible. The safest wording is “the proposed oldest animal fossil.”

Evidence or estimate Approximate age How scientists use it
Turner’s sponge-like networks in Canadian reef rock 890 million years Possible animal fossil; interpretation is disputed (Nature, 2021)
Oldest animal remains broadly accepted by nearly everyone, from Newfoundland About 571 million years Conservative benchmark for the earliest secure animal fossils, according to Rachel Wood of the University of Edinburgh
Earliest metazoans in the conventional fossil record 572–602 million years Range cited in a 2023 review in Global Change Biology
Earliest animal origin suggested by some molecular clocks As far back as about 850 million years Genetic estimates that predate the secure fossil record; they remain in tension with the rocks

If Turner’s interpretation is correct, the evidence would predate the familiar Cambrian animal record by roughly 350 million years. That would not make the specimen a complete “first animal” body; it would be evidence that sponge-like animals were already present.

Why do scientists disagree about the sponge identification?

The pattern has features that fit a sponge scaffold, but shape alone cannot establish a biological origin. Microbes can build intricate structures, and inorganic crystals can grow into branching forms that look biological. The Canadian material also lacks the kind of preserved biomolecules that have supported some younger sponge claims.

Researchers would therefore compare the proposed sponge explanation with microbial and abiotic alternatives across several independent tests:

Question What supports a sponge interpretation? What keeps alternatives open?
Morphology Branching networks resemble the internal framework of living horny sponges and fit expected decay and mineralization patterns for spongin. Microbial growth and crystal formation can also produce complex branching shapes.
Geochemical or molecular evidence A biological signature that survives analysis would strengthen the case. No biomolecular preservation of the type used in some younger sponge claims has been reported for this material.
Three-dimensional reproducibility The same organized network appearing through multiple sections would support a real organismal framework. A single view can make accidental crystal or microbial patterns look more coherent than they are.
Compatibility with the reef ecosystem A sponge living within cavities of a microbial reef would fit the proposed setting. The same rocks must also be tested against known microbial and mineral structures from that environment.
Independent discoveries Comparable structures at other sites and ages would make an isolated explanation less likely. The claim currently centers on the Canadian material, so confirmation elsewhere is important.

Rachel Wood captured the burden of proof: “It’s such a big claim that you really have to eliminate all the other possibilities.”

Did a sponge survive Snowball Earth?

The proposed fossil lived during the Neoproterozoic, an interval marked by very low oxygen and episodes commonly called Snowball Earth, when ice may have covered most or nearly all of the surface. If the structures are sponge fossils, their age would show that animal life existed through conditions considered exceptionally difficult for many organisms.

That does not prove that this particular sponge lived beneath a global sheet of ice or that it survived every glacial phase. The environmental story is an inference from the rock’s age and the broader climate record.

The suggested refuge

Turner’s proposed mechanism is local shelter. A small sponge could have occupied pores, cavities or crevices in a microbial reef, next to photosynthetic cyanobacteria. Those cyanobacteria could have released oxygen locally, creating a more habitable pocket than the surrounding seawater.

This is a hypothesis about how early animals might have persisted, not an observed behavior preserved in the fossil. A 2023 review in Global Change Biology discusses modern Antarctic and polar habitats as useful analogues for considering how animals might live in and around ice, while emphasizing the continuing disagreement between fossil dates and molecular-clock estimates.

What would an 890-million-year-old sponge change?

It would move the evidence for animals far earlier than the accepted fossil benchmark and suggest that sponge-grade animals evolved before the Cambrian explosion. It would also imply that at least some early animals tolerated prolonged episodes of low oxygen and severe global glaciation.

David Gold, a geobiologist at the University of California, Davis, described the evolutionary significance as follows: “If Turner’s structures do prove to be sponge fossils, it would be very exciting, and help us nail down the early story of animal evolution.”

He also explained the environmental consequence: “If the ancestors of modern sponges really were alive 890 million years ago, then it means early animals survived through very trying conditions for life, such as extremely low levels of oxygen and ‘snowball Earth’ periods during which the surface of the planet almost entirely froze over.”

How old is the oldest animal fossil that scientists broadly accept?

The practical benchmark is about 571 million years: fossils from Newfoundland that Wood identifies as the oldest animal remains almost everyone can agree on. They appeared shortly after the last Snowball Earth glaciation.

A 2023 review gives a similar conventional fossil-record window of 572–602 million years for the earliest metazoans. Molecular-clock analyses, however, can place animal origins as far back as approximately 850 million years. Molecular clocks estimate when lineages split from shared ancestors; they do not constitute a fossil discovery, which is why the two lines of evidence can disagree.

What evidence could settle the Canadian claim?

The debate will turn on whether the structures show biological organization that competing processes cannot reproduce. The most persuasive progress would come from:

  • Detailed three-dimensional imaging and repeated sections showing a consistent, organism-like network.
  • Geochemical or molecular signatures that distinguish decayed spongin from ordinary microbial or mineral structures.
  • Evidence that the structures fit the ecology and sedimentary setting of the ancient reef.
  • Comparable specimens from independent localities, rather than only one Canadian occurrence.

Until those lines of evidence converge, the Canadian material should be presented as a possible sponge fossil, not as a settled world record.

What should readers remember?

  • The proposed fossil is a microscopic branching network in 890-million-year-old Canadian reef rock, not a complete animal body.
  • Its sponge interpretation is controversial because microbes and inorganic crystals can create similar forms.
  • If genuine, it would place animal evidence about 350 million years earlier than the Cambrian record.
  • The oxygen-rich reef-cavity refuge beside cyanobacteria is a plausible hypothesis, not proof of how the organism lived.
  • The oldest broadly accepted animal remains are about 571 million years old from Newfoundland.
  • Fossils and molecular clocks still give different answers about when animals originated.
