Are tilapia bottom feeders? Not as a simple, defining rule. USDA describes tilapia as semi-herbivorous in their natural feeding habits; farmed fish may receive prepared feed, and feeding practices vary. For people deciding whether tilapia is safe to eat, U.S. FDA/EPA guidance lists it as a “Best Choice” for mercury. That does not mean every fish is free of contaminants, but the cited evidence does not support avoiding tilapia.
Are tilapia bottom feeders?
“Bottom feeder” is an oversimplification for tilapia. USDA Agricultural Research Service describes their natural feeding habits as semi-herbivorous—plant-eating—not as exclusively feeding on the bottom. That description also does not mean tilapia never feed near the bottom.
Natural feeding behavior and farm diet are separate questions. Cultured tilapia may be given formulated feed, but feed and feeding management depend on factors such as fish size, species, production system, and environmental conditions. USDA says there is no single best feeding method for all tilapia. These facts do not establish one universal diet for farmed fish, and claims that tilapia are routinely raised on sewage or animal waste should not be inferred from the “bottom feeder” label.

Is tilapia healthy to eat?
Tilapia provides protein. USDA’s Standard Reference 27 lists cooked tilapia prepared with dry heat at 128 calories and 26.2 grams of protein per 100 grams of edible portion. Those figures describe that specific preparation and portion basis; they are not universal values for fried, breaded, sauced, or restaurant tilapia.
Fish generally provide protein, fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals, according to FDA. The cited evidence does not establish a special disease-prevention benefit for tilapia. The nutrition of a meal also depends on preparation and additions such as salt, breading, sauces, and frying.

What does FDA/EPA guidance say about mercury?
In U.S. FDA/EPA consumer guidance, tilapia is in the “Best Choices” category for mercury. The categories help people choose fish within the agencies’ advice; they are not a guarantee about every contaminant or every individual fish.

FDA’s advice is especially intended to help people who might become or are pregnant or breastfeeding, and parents feeding children. Adults in those groups are advised to eat 2–3 servings a week from the “Best Choices” list, using 4 ounces as a serving basis, and to vary the fish they eat.
For children, FDA gives smaller, age-based average portions and generally advises two weekly servings from “Best Choices”:

Check the current FDA chart and relevant pediatric guidance when choosing portions for a particular child. FDA’s technical discussion describes the agencies’ mercury risk-assessment method; its reference dose and screening approach are not a tilapia-specific toxicity threshold.

What is known about PFAS in tilapia?
FDA says its seafood PFAS data are limited. In a targeted 2022 survey, the agency detected one or more PFAS in 60 of 81 samples (74%) across eight seafood types: clams, cod, crab, pollock, salmon, shrimp, tilapia, and tuna. That is a combined result for the surveyed samples, not a tilapia-specific detection rate or a measure of all tilapia on the market. FDA recommends eating a varied diet that includes seafood.
A separate FDA update from 2019 discussed two rounds of limited testing in which two tilapia samples had detectable PFOS. FDA said the small sample sizes could not support definitive conclusions and did not provide scientific evidence to recommend avoiding a particular food, including tilapia, on that basis. This limited finding should not be treated as a comprehensive assessment of current tilapia supplies.

What about other contaminants or fish caught locally?
Contaminant levels can vary by fish and location. FDA advises people eating recreationally caught fish to consult local or state advisories for the specific water body. Advice about commercially sold tilapia should not automatically be applied to a fish caught in a potentially contaminated waterway.
