What Do Mullet Fish Feed On? Diet by Age, Species and Habitat

Mullet start with zooplankton and tiny crustaceans, then shift toward detritus, dead plant matter, diatoms, algae and microorganisms in bottom sediment. Species, size and habitat all matter.

Most mullet feed in daylight. Larvae and young fish take zooplankton such as copepods and other tiny crustaceans; as they grow, they rely increasingly on detritus, dead plant material, diatoms and other microalgae, bacteria, protozoa and small organisms living in fine sediment or on vegetation. The exact menu depends on the species, body size and habitat.

What mullet eat at different life stages

Life stage Main foods Typical feeding area
Larvae and small juveniles Zooplankton, copepods, mosquito larvae and other microcrustaceans Water column and shallow nursery habitats
Growing juveniles A mix of plankton, small invertebrates, detritus and algae Water column, vegetation and bottom sediments
Adults Detritus, dead plant matter, diatoms and other microalgae, bacteria, protozoa and microorganisms associated with sediment Upper layer of fine bottom sediment, rocks and submerged plants

This age-related change is documented especially well for striped or flathead grey mullet (Mugil cephalus). The North Carolina Division of Marine Fisheries describes carnivorous feeding on copepods, mosquito larvae and microcrustaceans in larvae and small juveniles, followed by greater dependence on benthic detritus as body size increases. South Carolina’s Department of Natural Resources likewise reports that young mullet eat small crustaceans and other zooplankton, while adults ingest plant matter and bottom sediment containing decaying vegetation and algae. Polychaete worms can also occur in the diet.

Do mullet eat algae?

Yes, particularly as they become larger. Adult mullet consume benthic and epiphytic microalgae, including diatoms, growing on sediment, rocks and submerged vegetation. They also take the dead plant material and microorganisms mixed with that algae. This does not make every mullet a strict vegetarian: young fish commonly eat animal plankton and small invertebrates.

Do mullet eat plankton?

Young mullet are important zooplankton feeders. Copepods and other microscopic crustaceans supply food during the larval and early juvenile stages. Plankton remains part of the available food in many habitats, but larger mullet generally obtain a greater share of their nutrition from bottom-associated organic material rather than actively hunting in the water column.

How mullet feed on the bottom

Mullet are mainly diurnal feeders. A fish can suck in the top layer of sediment, then separate edible organic particles from heavier inorganic grains. The material swallowed may include detritus, dead plant fragments, diatoms, bacteria, protozoa and other tiny organisms living on or between sediment particles. This “vacuuming” behavior lets mullet exploit mud, sand-mud flats, lagoon bottoms and vegetated margins that support abundant microbial food.

The proportion of sediment and detritus rises with size in flathead grey mullet. In other words, a large adult may appear to be eating mud, but it is selecting the concentrated organic matter and microorganisms contained in that surface layer.

Why the diet differs among mullet

“Mullet” includes many species in the family Mugilidae, so no single food list applies everywhere. Diet changes with several conditions:

  • Species: feeding structures and preferred habitats differ among mugilids.
  • Age and body size: zooplankton and small prey dominate early; detritus and algae become more important later.
  • Habitat: estuaries, lagoons, rivers and coastal shallows offer different mixes of plankton, vegetation and sediment.
  • Water position: larvae and small juveniles feed more in the water column, while adults commonly work the bottom or plant surfaces.
  • Wild versus cultured fish: pond-raised mullet may use natural pond food, detritus and uneaten feed available in the system.

How broad is their salinity tolerance?

The Food and Agriculture Organization reported in 2008 that adult flathead grey mullet had been found across salinities from 0 to 75‰. Juveniles reaching about 4–7 cm in length can tolerate that broad range as well. Salinity tolerance does not mean the fish eat the same things everywhere; the available plankton, algae and sediment food still depends on the local habitat.

What bait works for mullet?

There is no single bait that matches every mullet species or fishing situation. Their natural diet explains why approaches that imitate small food particles, algae-coated surfaces or organic material can be more plausible than large predatory-fish lures. Success also depends on whether the fish are feeding in a tidal creek, a lagoon, a river or along a vegetated shoreline, and on local fishing rules.

Because the biology evidence does not establish one universally effective retail bait, choose bait advice for the particular species, water and regulations rather than assuming that every mullet will take the same product.

What should you feed a mullet in a tank or pond?

First identify the species and whether it is legally and practically suitable for captivity. Mullet are not aquarium cleaners that can live on algae alone. Young fish need appropriately sized planktonic or small animal foods, while larger fish naturally sift detritus and microalgae from surfaces and sediment.

In culture systems, mullet may obtain nutrition from natural pond productivity, detritus and feed leftovers. The available evidence does not support naming one universal commercial pellet, algae wafer or aquarium formula for all mullet. Any prepared diet should therefore be selected with advice from a fish-health professional or aquaculture specialist who knows the species, size, water conditions and stocking density. Remove uneaten food so it does not degrade water quality.

  • Ideal For: Betta Fish, Tetras, Barbs and other small mouthed tropical fish.

Key takeaway

Mullet shift from a plankton-rich juvenile diet to a predominantly bottom-associated diet as they grow. Adults are best described as detritus and microalgae feeders that also consume the bacteria, protozoa and tiny animals living in sediment and on vegetation—not as strict herbivores and not as fish that simply eat mud.
