Understanding Why Your Dog Is Panting So Much

Dogs commonly pant to cool down after exercise, in warm or humid weather, or when excited. It is more concerning when panting is sudden, unusually fast or loud, keeps going as your dog rests and cools, or happens at rest without an obvious reason. If your dog is struggling to breathe, weak, confused, vomiting, collapsing, or showing other emergency signs, contact an emergency veterinary hospital and go now.

When is panting an emergency?

Go to an emergency veterinary hospital immediately if panting comes with signs of heatstroke or breathing distress. Do not wait for a definite cause or for every symptom to appear.

  • Possible heatstroke: continued excessive panting after heat exposure or strenuous exercise, heavy drooling, vomiting, bloody diarrhea, weakness, confusion, incoordination, seizures, collapse, or unconsciousness.
  • Possible breathing distress: labored or noisy breathing, an extended neck, blue or pale gums, marked weakness, or an inability to get enough air. Respiratory distress is different from ordinary cooling panting and is a medical emergency.

Call the hospital while you prepare to leave if doing so will not delay transport. Keep the car cool and the trip calm. For suspected overheating, move your dog to shade or air conditioning, stop activity, offer water, and begin gentle cooling with cool water while arranging veterinary care. Do not postpone the trip to see whether cooling alone solves the problem. A dog that seems better after overheating still needs veterinary follow-up because internal injury may remain.

Why might a dog pant a lot?

The meaning depends on your dog’s usual pattern, what was happening beforehand, how quickly the panting began, and whether other signs are present. Panting by itself cannot identify the cause.

Heat, exercise, or excitement

After exertion, in warm or humid weather, or during excitement, panting is a normal way for a dog to cool down. It should generally ease as the dog rests in a cooler place. Shade or air conditioning and access to water can help. Short-nosed dogs, dogs carrying excess weight, older dogs, and dogs with medical problems may cope less well with heat; overweight pets and short-nosed breeds face higher risk during warm-weather exercise.

Stress or fear

Noise, travel, unfamiliar places, or other stressful situations can trigger panting. Notice whether it starts with a particular situation and whether your dog can settle once the trigger passes. If the pattern is frequent or your dog cannot settle, discuss it with a veterinarian after physical causes have been considered.

Pain or injury

Panting can accompany arthritis, an injury, back pain, or abdominal discomfort. Restlessness, trembling, limping, vocalizing, or guarding a part of the body may offer clues, but the absence of those signs does not rule out pain.

Heart or respiratory disease

Heart or respiratory problems can make breathing harder, sometimes with coughing, reduced tolerance for exercise, noisy or labored breathing, an extended neck, weakness, or pale or blue gums. Laryngeal paralysis and heart disease are among possible causes of respiratory distress. Breathing effort or abnormal gum color warrants immediate emergency evaluation.

Heat illness

Heat illness can follow hot or humid exposure or strenuous exercise. Excessive panting may progress to drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, weakness, confusion, incoordination, seizures, collapse, or unconsciousness. The progression can be life-threatening, so act on the signs rather than waiting to confirm a temperature.

Medication, toxin exposure, or endocrine disease

Medication side effects and toxin exposure are possible causes. Cushing’s disease can cause panting as part of a slower, progressive pattern. A veterinarian needs to review medications and possible exposures and may recommend diagnostic tests; panting alone cannot distinguish these causes.

What should I do if my dog is panting at rest?

First consider whether your dog has just exercised, been in heat, or become excited. Move them to a cool, quiet place and observe whether the panting eases as they rest. Panting that is unusually fast, loud, persistent, unexplained, or out of character—especially when it happens at rest—deserves prompt veterinary advice. If it is severe or comes with coughing, weakness, vomiting, abnormal gum color, confusion, collapse, seizures, or visible breathing effort, call an emergency veterinary hospital and go immediately.

When you call, describe when the panting began, what your dog was doing beforehand, the surrounding conditions, any other signs, and any medicines or possible toxin exposures. This information can help the veterinary team assess urgency, but it cannot replace an examination.

Can I use temperature to tell whether my dog has heatstroke?

Merck Veterinary Manual gives a normal rectal temperature range for dogs and cats of about 101.5–102°F (38.6–38.9°C). A reading is only one piece of information: measuring at home does not rule out heatstroke, and you should not delay emergency care to take a temperature if your dog has concerning signs. A digital pet rectal thermometer can be an optional monitoring aid while you contact a veterinarian, but the symptoms and circumstances matter more than trying to establish a home threshold.

How does a veterinarian find the cause?

Because panting can arise from normal cooling, pain, stress, medication effects, heat illness, or heart, respiratory, and endocrine disease, a veterinarian must evaluate the whole pattern. Share your dog’s baseline, when the change started, recent activity and heat exposure, accompanying signs, and medication or exposure history. Seek care promptly for new, persistent, or unexplained panting; urgent signs require emergency care rather than a routine appointment.
