If you think your pet may be having an emergency, call an emergency veterinary clinic now. Do not wait until morning when your pet has trouble breathing, collapses, has a seizure, is badly injured, or shows another severe or rapidly worsening sign.
Which symptoms mean your pet needs emergency care?
The ASPCA and Merck Veterinary Manual identify the following as emergency warning signs for pets. If you see one, contact an emergency clinic and arrange immediate care.

| Heat-related illness | Heavy or rapid panting, drooling, weakness, confusion, vomiting or diarrhea, unsteadiness, abnormal gums, or collapse after heat exposure | Begin gentle cooling and go to a veterinary hospital |
| Trauma or serious wounds | Major accident or injury, severe burns, an open wound exposing bone, or signs of shock | Immediate veterinary examination |
| Urinary or reproductive emergency | Inability to pass urine or difficult labor | Immediate veterinary care |
These signs are not a complete diagnostic checklist. A rapidly worsening condition also warrants prompt veterinary advice. VCA advises that a dog should be examined after an accident even if it seems to have recovered; injuries may not be obvious at first.
What should you do while getting veterinary help?
Call the clinic and describe what is happening
Phone the emergency clinic as you leave, if possible, so staff can prepare. If someone is with you, have them call while you focus on your pet. Give the clinic your pet’s species, age, weight, symptoms, when they started, and any known exposure or accident. Follow the clinic’s directions.

If poisoning is possible
- Move your pet away from the substance or exposure.
- Keep the packaging or note the substance and the amount and time involved, if known.
- Call a veterinarian or animal poison-control service immediately. ASPCA guidance warns that signs can be delayed, and waiting for symptoms can make treatment harder.
- Do not induce vomiting or give medication unless a veterinary professional or poison-control expert tells you to.
If your pet is having trouble breathing, is unconscious, is bleeding, or is seizing, go directly to a veterinary clinic rather than delaying to make a poison-control call.
If your pet is bleeding
Place a clean cloth or towel over the wound and apply firm, direct pressure. If blood soaks through, add another layer on top rather than removing the first one. Severe or uncontrolled bleeding needs immediate hospital care.

If your pet is having a seizure
Move nearby objects away to reduce the chance of injury. Do not restrain your pet and do not put your fingers near its mouth. Time the seizure. VCA advises immediate veterinary treatment for a dog whose seizure lasts more than five minutes or for repeated seizures; contact an emergency veterinarian when the seizure stops.
If heatstroke is possible
Move your pet to shade or a comfortably cool area. Use room-temperature wet towels around the neck, armpits, and groin, replacing them frequently. Do not use an ice-cold bath. The AVMA’s 2025 handout advises taking a pet to the closest veterinary hospital as soon as possible and beginning cooling right away.

Transport an injured pet carefully
For an injured dog, support the neck and back while moving it. For an injured cat, use an open-topped carrier or box and avoid twisting the neck. Ask the emergency clinic for transport guidance if you are unsure how to move your pet safely.
Can you wait until morning?
There is no reliable wait-until-morning rule for every pet or symptom. Age, species, medical history, and how quickly signs are changing all affect triage. Call your regular veterinarian or an emergency hospital and describe what you see; if a severe warning sign in the table is present, seek emergency care rather than waiting for an appointment the next day.

How can you prepare before an emergency?
- Ask your regular veterinarian how after-hours coverage works.
- Save the name, address, and phone number of a nearby emergency veterinary clinic.
- Keep a carrier, towels, gauze, and your pet’s medication and medical information accessible.
- Keep a pet first-aid kit available, but treat first aid only as temporary support: the CDC states that emergency treatment and first aid should never substitute for veterinary care.
Poison-control services and clinic availability vary by location, so confirm the appropriate local contacts in advance.
