Permai, the Asian elephant transferred from Perth Zoo, arrived safely at Monarto Safari Park in South Australia on 29 January 2025, after a reported 40-hour, 2,700-kilometre journey across the Nullarbor. Zoos SA said she rested in the elephant barn after the trip. She is now one of five elephants at Monarto’s Elephants of Asia precinct.
When did Permai leave Perth Zoo and arrive at Monarto?
Permai left Perth Zoo on 27 January 2025 and reached Monarto Safari Park on 29 January. Zoos SA’s arrival announcement, published on 31 January, said the trip took 40 hours and covered 2,700 kilometres across the Nullarbor. Those figures were reported by Zoos SA and Monarto; they are not independent measurements. Monarto Safari Park’s arrival announcement
How was the long-distance transfer managed?
Zoos SA said the move followed more than a year of planning and crate training. Permai travelled in a custom-built, insulated and air-conditioned crate, accompanied by veterinarians and experienced keepers.
- The crate had a temperature gauge and cameras so the team could monitor conditions and Permai during transit.
- It could hold up to 1,000 litres of water, according to Zoos SA.
- After arrival, Permai rested and recuperated in Monarto’s elephant barn.
These are details reported by the organizations responsible for the transfer. Zoos SA’s departure announcement

How did Permai settle in with Monarto’s elephants?
Settling in was a gradual process, rather than an immediate move into unrestricted contact with the herd. Monarto reported that Permai and Burma first touched trunks through mesh at the end of January 2025. By March, keepers described the pair as interacting and gradually building companionship and trust. The park’s manager of elephants, Andrew Coers, said introductions would proceed “on elephant time,” potentially taking days or weeks. Monarto Safari Park’s arrival announcement
A later, specific milestone came in February 2026, when Monarto reported that Permai and Tang Mo shared a habitat without barriers, feeding side by side and sharing dust baths. This was a dated keeper observation, not a guarantee that the elephants’ social arrangements would remain unchanged. Monarto Safari Park’s Elephants of Asia page
