Cod predators depend on the cod’s species, size, habitat and region. Baby cod are eaten by squid, seabirds, sculpins and other small groundfish. As cod grow, larger fish such as halibut and other cod join the list, along with seals, porpoises and some whales. Adult cod are themselves major bottom-dwelling predators, so the largest fish have fewer routine animal predators. Fishing removes cod too, but it is human harvest rather than biological predation.
What eats baby cod?
Predation is heaviest when cod are small. Atlantic cod larvae initially feed on zooplankton, including copepods and amphipods. After the larval stage, they become vulnerable to a wider range of predators while they are still small enough to be swallowed by relatively modest-sized animals.
- Squid
- Seabirds
- Sculpins
- Other groundfish
- Small crustacean-eating fish and invertebrate predators
Fisheries and Oceans Canada summarizes the pattern as: “The predators of cod tend to change as they grow.” A predator that can consume a larva or small juvenile may no longer be able to handle a larger cod, while larger hunters become possible threats as the fish increases in size.
Predators of larger juvenile Atlantic cod
Once Atlantic cod are larger, their predators shift toward bigger fish and marine mammals. Documented or identified predators of larger juveniles include:

Atlantic cod versus Pacific cod predators
“Cod” refers to several species with different food webs. Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) live across the North Atlantic, while Pacific cod (Gadus macrocephalus) inhabit the North Pacific, including the Bering Sea and Gulf of Alaska. Their predator communities overlap in broad categories but are not identical.

| Cod species or stage | Predators identified in the available records | Context |
|---|---|---|
| Very young Atlantic cod | Squid, sculpins, seabirds and other groundfish | Small body size makes larvae and early juveniles vulnerable to numerous smaller predators. |
| Larger juvenile Atlantic cod | Greenland halibut, cod, harp seals, hooded seals, harbour porpoises, pilot whales and likely minke whales | The predator set shifts toward larger fish and marine mammals as cod grow. |
| Pacific cod | Pacific cod, halibut, salmon sharks, northern fur seals, Steller sea lions, harbour porpoises, various whales and tufted puffins | These records apply to Pacific cod food webs and should not be assumed to describe every Atlantic stock. |
Do seals eat cod?
Yes. Harp and hooded seals are listed predators of larger juvenile Atlantic cod. Northern fur seals and Steller sea lions are recorded among Pacific cod predators. A seal’s contribution to cod mortality depends on where the seal feeds, which cod sizes are present and how much the local populations overlap.
Do whales eat cod?
Some whales do eat cod or are identified as cod predators. Pilot whales and likely minke whales are associated with larger juvenile Atlantic cod, while various whale species are listed among Pacific cod predators. Harbour porpoises also consume cod in some regional food webs. These records do not mean that every whale species routinely targets adult cod everywhere.

Do cod eat other cod?
Yes. Cod are capable of cannibalism. Adult Atlantic cod have been documented consuming other cod, and cod are included among the predators of larger juvenile Atlantic cod. The Food and Agriculture Organization describes adult cod as carnivorous and capable of eating almost any marine animal, including other cod, when hungry.
Cannibalism is part of cod’s role as a top predator in bottom-ocean communities. Atlantic cod eat a mixture of fish and invertebrates, while Pacific cod consume clams, worms, crabs, shrimp and juvenile fish.

Why the biggest cod are not eaten by everything
Cod become harder to capture and swallow as they grow. Large Atlantic cod can reach about 51 inches and 77 pounds, according to a current NOAA species profile; Pacific cod can reach about 6 feet. At those sizes, routine predation is concentrated among sufficiently large fish and marine mammals rather than the many small predators that attack larvae and juveniles.
Cod are also active predators themselves. NOAA describes Atlantic cod as “top predators in the bottom ocean community,” reflecting their ability to hunt fish and a broad range of invertebrates. Their position in the food web changes with size: a young cod is primarily prey, while a mature cod can be both predator and prey.

Where and when predation differs
There is no single worldwide list of “the cod predators.” A seal may be important in one stock but uncommon around another. Rocky slopes, ledges, continental shelves and cold bottom waters bring different predators and cod together in different ways. Seasonal movements, depth, schooling behavior and the abundance of alternative prey can all change how often a predator takes cod.
- Species: Atlantic and Pacific cod have different regional food webs.
- Life stage: Larvae, juveniles and adults face different predator sizes.
- Habitat: Bottom structure and depth determine which hunters can encounter cod.
- Predator strategy: Seals and whales forage differently from halibut, sharks or seabirds.
- Local abundance: Predators may switch among prey when cod are scarce or plentiful.
Fishing is a major source of cod mortality, but not predation
Commercial and recreational fishing removes cod from the population, yet fishing is a human harvest rather than an animal predator-prey relationship. In the United States, NOAA reported 2024 commercial Atlantic-cod landings of 1.4 million pounds, valued at $2.8 million, plus 210,000 pounds landed recreationally. Those figures describe reported U.S. landings for that year, not the amount eaten by wild predators.
