What Is the Difference Between Fish and Marine Mammals?

Fish generally breathe through gills, while marine mammals breathe air with lungs, nurse their young with milk and have hair at some stage of life. Dolphins, whales and seals are mammals—not fish—despite living in the ocean.

Fish and marine mammals are different biological groups. Fish generally extract oxygen from water with gills, while marine mammals breathe air with lungs, are warm-blooded, have hair at some stage of life, and produce milk for their young. Living in the ocean does not make a mammal a fish.

The key difference is biological classification

Fish are vertebrates in groups distinct from mammals. “Fish” is a broad common grouping rather than a single mammal-like class. Marine mammals are members of Mammalia that have adapted to life in the sea or coastal waters.

A dolphin, whale, porpoise, seal, sea lion, walrus, manatee, dugong, sea otter, or polar bear remains a mammal regardless of where it swims or hunts. The word marine describes habitat; it does not describe the animal’s class.

Fish and marine mammals compared

Feature Fish Marine mammals
Biological group Vertebrates distinct from mammals; “fish” is a broad common grouping. Members of Mammalia adapted to marine environments.
Breathing Generally use gills to take oxygen from water. Use lungs to breathe air and must surface or otherwise reach the air.
Young and feeding Do not nurse offspring with mammalian milk. Produce milk and nurse their young.
Temperature and hair Often described in basic comparisons as cold-blooded; that is a generalization, not an exception-free rule for every fish. Warm-blooded and have hair at some point in life, even when adults appear hairless.
Movement in water Fins and body shapes suited to swimming. Streamlined bodies and paddle-like limbs or flippers evolved independently for swimming.

How breathing differs

Fish take oxygen from water

Most fish pass water over gills, where oxygen moves into the bloodstream. This lets them remain submerged while they obtain oxygen.

Marine mammals breathe air

Dolphins, whales, seals, and other marine mammals breathe with lungs. They cannot obtain oxygen from water through gills. Dolphins surface for breaths, and whales use blowholes connected to their respiratory system. A marine mammal can hold its breath for a long time, but it still has to return to the surface to breathe.

How reproduction and body traits differ

Mammals nurse their young

Producing milk is a defining mammalian trait. A mother dolphin, seal, manatee, or sea otter feeds its offspring milk rather than relying on the feeding strategies used by fish.

  • CARTRIDGE REFILLS: Change cartridges monthly; uses large-sized Tetra Whisper Bio-Bag Filter Cartridges (refills sold separately).

Hair may be hard to notice

Marine mammals have hair at some stage of life, although an adult may have very little visible hair. This trait, together with lungs, warm-blooded physiology, and milk production, helps identify them as mammals even when their bodies look fish-like.

Which animals count as marine mammals?

Marine mammals include several very different groups:

Tetra Whisper 85 GPH Internal Power Filter For Aquariums
  • INTERNAL POWER FILTER: Tetra Whisper Internal Power Filter for 5- to 10-gallon aquariums uses medium Whisper BioBag filter cartridges that are easy to change.
  • QUIET 85 GPH MOTOR: The internal pump efficiently filters up to 85 gallons per hour.
  • POWERFUL FILTRATION: Water flows through the cartridge floss, trapping debris and fish waste, while Ultra-activated carbon helps remove odor and discoloration.
  • SPACE-SAVING DESIGN: Your aquarium can be 1” from the wall with the internal filter designed to clip directly on your aquarium wall and be hidden by décor.
  • EASILY ADJUSTABLE: Adjustable clip allows for a variety of setups to easily adjust to high or low water levels.
  • Cetaceans: whales, dolphins, and porpoises.
  • Pinnipeds: seals, sea lions, and walruses.
  • Sirenians: manatees and dugongs.
  • Marine fissipeds: polar bears and sea otters.

Not all of these animals spend every moment in open water. Pinnipeds come ashore or onto ice to rest and give birth. Polar bears and sea otters spend substantial time on land, ice, or shore while still being included among marine mammals because of their adaptations and dependence on marine environments.

Why fish and marine mammals can look alike

Swimming favors similar solutions in unrelated animals. Both fish and marine mammals may have streamlined bodies, smooth surfaces, and structures that function as fins or flippers. These similarities are adaptations to moving through water, not proof that the animals belong to the same biological group.

Common questions answered

Are dolphins fish?

No. Dolphins are mammals. They breathe air with lungs, surface to breathe, give birth to live young, and feed those young milk.

What is the difference between a fish and a whale?

A whale is a marine mammal: it breathes air with lungs and nurses its young. A fish generally breathes through gills and does not nurse offspring with milk.

Are seals and sea lions fish?

No. Seals and sea lions are pinnipeds, a group of marine mammals. They breathe air, nurse their young, and come onto land or ice for important parts of their lives.

Are all animals in the ocean fish?

No. Fish share the ocean with marine mammals, sea turtles, seabirds, and many invertebrates. Habitat alone does not determine classification.

A reliable way to identify the difference

  1. Ask whether the animal breathes air with lungs or extracts oxygen from water with gills.
  2. Check whether it produces milk to nurse its young.
  3. Look for the broader mammalian pattern: warm-blooded physiology and hair at some stage of life.
  4. Use classification rather than appearance. A flipper, streamlined body, or ocean habitat can evolve in both fish and mammals.
