What Fish Can Live With Guppies? Safe Tank Mates and Pairings to Avoid

Small, peaceful community fish may suit guppies when their water needs, adult size, temperament, social requirements and tank space all fit. Learn which pairings merit consideration and which to avoid.

Guppies can live with some small, peaceful community fish, but no fish is a safe match just because it appears on a general compatibility list. Compare the specific species’ water needs, adult size, temperament, group requirements and space needs with your guppies and tank. Platies and cory catfish are reasonable candidates to investigate; goldfish are a poor match, and bettas are a risky one.

How to tell whether a fish can live with guppies

Check the particular species rather than relying on a broad label such as “tetra” or “danio.” A suitable pairing needs to work across several factors at once:

  • Water conditions: Compare temperature, pH and, when relevant, hardness. Aim for a comfortable overlap in the species’ care guidance and keep the aquarium stable; a single shared boundary value is not a strong match.
  • Temperament: Avoid fish known to be aggressive or to nip fins. Guppies’ conspicuous, flowing tails can make them vulnerable to fin-nippers.
  • Adult size and feeding behavior: A fish that grows large enough to swallow a guppy is not a suitable tank mate, even if it is peaceful toward fish of its own size.
  • Social needs: Check how many of each species should be kept together. A compatible fish still needs the right group size.
  • Tank capacity and swimming space: Account for the adults, not just the fish at purchase size. Different swimming zones may reduce crowding, but do not by themselves establish compatibility.

Care references do not give one universal guppy water range. PetMD lists 72–82°F and pH 6.8–7.8; Fluval’s 2022 guppy sheet gives 74–80°F, pH 7.0–8.0 and hardness 6–18 dH; Aquarium Industries’ 2017 Australian retail care sheet gives 24–26°C, pH 7.0–7.5 and general hardness 250–300 ppm. These are source-specific husbandry ranges, not interchangeable guarantees for every strain or community. Compare the guidance for the actual fish you plan to keep and the conditions in your established tank.

Potential guppy tank mates

PetMD’s June 2, 2026 guppy-care article names cory catfish, danios, gouramis, mollies, platies, rainbowfish, rasboras, swordtails and tetras as possible peaceful community companions. Fluval also describes guppies as compatible with small, peaceful species from groups including livebearers, tetras, rasboras, anabantids and bottom dwellers. These are starting points, not blanket endorsements of every species in those groups.

Fish What the care guidance supports What to check before pairing
Platies PetMD includes platies among possible peaceful companions. Petco’s compatibility chart labels both platies and guppies peaceful and gives overlapping temperature ranges. Check actual pH, adult size and tank capacity. If both sexes are present, plan for livebearer reproduction.
Cory catfish PetMD lists cory catfish as possible companions; Petco describes them as peaceful and recommends groups of three or more. Choose a particular cory species only after checking its adult size, water needs, substrate and group requirements.
Rasboras and danios Both groups appear in guppy-care guidance as community-fish possibilities. Confirm the exact species’ adult size, activity level, group needs and water conditions, and whether the tank provides enough swimming room.
Tetras Tetras are included in broad compatibility guidance from PetMD and Fluval. Do not assume every tetra species fits. Petco’s chart lists neon tetras at pH 6.0–7.0 and guppies at 7.0–8.5, leaving only 7.0 in common. That narrow boundary overlap is not an effortless match; check species-specific guidance and actual stable conditions.
Other livebearers, gouramis and rainbowfish They appear in PetMD’s list of possible peaceful community companions. These are broad groups. Check the individual fish’s temperament, adult size, social needs and water parameters rather than treating the group name as approval.

Fish to avoid or treat as high risk

Goldfish: avoid

Goldfish prefer cooler water than guppies, and PetMD warns that they may grow large enough to eat them. The differences in temperature and adult size make goldfish a poor companion choice.

Bettas: not a reliably safe pairing

Fluval’s guppy sheet explicitly says guppies are “Not compatible with Bettas.” Petco describes male bettas as semi-aggressive and cautions against pairing guppies with fin-nippers, but does not establish that guppy-betta combinations are safe. Because the sources do not support a dependable match, the conservative choice is to avoid the pairing rather than count on an individual fish’s temperament.

Tiger barbs and other fin-nippers or aggressive fish: avoid by default

Fluval cautions against fast-moving, aggressive or larger fish, and Aquarium Industries warns that larger or aggressive fish may nip bright guppy tails. Petco identifies tiger barbs as semi-aggressive and advises avoiding long-finned fish with them. This is especially concerning for long-finned guppies.

Plan the guppies’ group and reproduction

PetMD recommends keeping guppies in groups of three or more. For mixed-sex groups, it recommends two to three females per male. If you keep males and females together, expect reproduction to be part of the stocking plan: Fluval notes that guppies eat their own fry, but that does not make offspring or population growth predictable. Decide whether you have room for additional fish and what you will do if fry survive.

Introduce tank mates carefully

  1. Check the actual species’ requirements. Compare temperature, pH and relevant hardness, as well as adult size, temperament, social group and space needs.
  2. Check the aquarium before adding fish. PetMD lists a freshwater aquarium water test kit among guppy supplies and recommends monitoring water quality. Test the tank rather than assuming its conditions match a care-sheet range.
  3. Add fish gradually. PetMD advises gradual introductions rather than adding all new tank mates at once.
  4. Monitor the water after each addition. PetMD specifically advises checking ammonia, pH and nitrate after adding tank mates. If the fish show signs of stress or water quality changes, reassess the stocking and aquarium conditions before adding anything else.
