“Rock cod” is an ambiguous common name, not a reliable species name. NOAA Fisheries lists it as an alternative name for yellowtail rockfish (Sebastes flavidus). The FDA also records “Rock Cod” as a vernacular cross-reference for Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua), whose acceptable market name is “Cod.” Check the scientific species or the regulated market name before judging what fish you have.
What fish is called rock cod?
The answer depends on the naming context:
| Name used | Species or scope | What the official source says |
|---|---|---|
| Rock cod | Yellowtail rockfish (Sebastes flavidus) | NOAA lists “Rock Cod” as an alternative name. The fish lives in the Northeast Pacific, from southern California to Alaska, commonly over deep reefs and from the surface to about 1,800 feet. It belongs to the Scorpaenidae family. NOAA Fisheries |
| Rock Cod | Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) | The FDA lists “Cod” as the acceptable market name and identifies “Rock Cod” only as a vernacular cross-reference. FDA Seafood List |
| Rockfish | Several Sebastes species | “Rockfish” is a broad name; it does not automatically mean yellowtail rockfish. FDA Regulatory Fish Encyclopedia |
For a particular fish, the species name, catch area and regulated market name are more useful than the words “rock cod” alone.
Is rock cod the same as cod?
Not necessarily. Yellowtail rockfish is a rockfish, not Atlantic cod. Atlantic cod is Gadus morhua, while yellowtail rockfish is Sebastes flavidus. The FDA’s Atlantic cod entry shows why the names can cause confusion: “Cod” is the acceptable market name, whereas “Rock Cod” is a vernacular cross-reference. The FDA warns that using such cross-reference names for interstate labeling may result in seafood misbranding. See the FDA entry.
Is rock cod a type of rockfish?
It can be. When “rock cod” refers to yellowtail rockfish, it means a member of the Sebastes group. But the phrase may also appear as the vernacular cross-reference for Atlantic cod, which is not a rockfish. “Rockfish” itself covers multiple Sebastes species, so a label that says only rockfish still may not identify yellowtail rockfish.

What does yellowtail rockfish taste like?
NOAA’s description applies specifically to yellowtail rockfish: very mild and slightly sweet, with lean bright-white flesh that can have a pinkish sheen. Its texture is medium-firm, with medium-sized flakes. NOAA lists it as available year-round and sourced from U.S. waters from Kodiak Island, Alaska, to Baja California. These characteristics should not be assigned automatically to every fish sold as “rock cod.” NOAA’s yellowtail rockfish seafood profile.

Is rockfish safe to eat?
FDA and EPA fish advice revised in October 2021 places “Rockfish” in the Good Choice category. That is an agency fish-advice category, not a measured mercury concentration for every species or product that might be called rock cod. - That stock was not subject to overfishing based on 2022 catch data.
- Farther south, yellowtail rockfish is managed in the Minor Shelf Rockfish South Complex. The complex’s overfished status was unknown because it had not been assessed, although it was not subject to overfishing based on 2022 catch data.
- For 2024, NOAA reports 5.9 million pounds of commercial yellowtail rockfish landings valued at $1.6 million, plus 360,000 pounds of recreational landings. Most commercial landings were in Oregon and Washington.

How to identify a product labeled “rock cod”
- Look for the scientific name. Sebastes flavidus identifies yellowtail rockfish; Gadus morhua identifies Atlantic cod.
- Check the regulated market name. For Atlantic cod, the FDA identifies “Cod” as the acceptable market name, not “Rock Cod.”
- Read the catch origin. Location can help distinguish a Northeast Pacific rockfish product from Atlantic cod, but origin alone is not a substitute for the species name.
- Do not generalize nutrition, flavor or sustainability. Apply those details only when the species is identified.
- Ask the seller when the label is unclear. A product described only as “rock cod” does not provide enough information for a species-level comparison.
Could FDA naming rules change?
In an FDA update dated March 31, 2026, the agency said the acceptable market name for the genus Sebastes was then “rockfish.” FDA requested public input on a possible market-name change for certain species after industry requests to use “snapper.” The announcement described a request for information, not a final naming change; labeling decisions also involve scientific classification, food-safety and hazard identification, labeling and allergen considerations. Check the current FDA Seafood List for later decisions. Read the March 2026 FDA update.
