Availability depends on your location, the species, local regulations and current stock. Start by checking your state and local rules, then contact licensed aquarium dealers or specialist hatcheries and ask whether they currently sell the species you want.
Where can you look for sturgeon?
Ask licensed aquarium dealers and specialist hatcheries or pond-stock suppliers in your area. A hatchery may be a more relevant lead than a neighborhood pet shop, but a facility that raises, displays or once sold sturgeon is not necessarily selling fish now. Call before making plans, and do not rely on general search results as proof of current inventory.
Freshwater Farms of Ohio describes past sales of white sturgeon for private pond stocking, including fish one to two feet long, and says fingerlings were no longer available from its former source. Its current hatchery information describes a white-sturgeon petting zoo and a separate lake-sturgeon display, not current fish sales. Contact the facility directly to ask about availability, species, size, sourcing, shipping and whether a sale is legal where you live: Freshwater Farms of Ohio’s historical sales information and current hatchery information.
Oregon illustrates how specialist sales can be regulated: under its cited program, selling live sturgeon or sturgeon eggs requires a sturgeon propagation permit in addition to a fish propagation license. That is a hatchery-sales pathway, not evidence of a list of retail pet shops: Oregon fish-hatchery guidance.

Can a pet store legally sell sturgeon?
Rules depend on the jurisdiction, species and seller. Do not assume that a fish offered online or in a shop can legally be bought, possessed or shipped to your address.
California: a narrow white-sturgeon exception
California allows aquarium or pet stores to sell white sturgeon (Acipenser transmontanus) only up to 8 inches in total length, and the seller needs an Aquarium Dealer’s Permit. The permit application says the fish must come from a registered aquaculture facility and be sold as pets or for resale as pets; permittees must keep sales and shipment logs. This is a California-specific rule, not a general allowance for other states: California Code of Regulations, Title 14, § 227 and the Aquarium Dealer’s Permit application.

Alabama and Minnesota: check the exact species and seller rules
Alabama prohibits possession, sale, offering for sale or import of sturgeon species that are not native to the state: Alabama’s rule. Minnesota requires aquarium facilities to be licensed for regulated aquatic life that occurs in the state or could survive there, and regulated species must be on the facility’s approved list: Minnesota DNR guidance. These examples show why a seller’s willingness to ship is not, by itself, confirmation that the transaction is legal for you.
What to confirm before you buy
- Identify the species. Ask for its full common and scientific name; rules and adult size can differ by species.
- Check the rules where the fish will live. Contact your state wildlife or fish-and-wildlife agency and ask about possession, sale, permits and transport. Check local restrictions too.
- Verify the seller and source. Ask whether the seller holds any required permit and where the fish was raised. In California, for example, eligible pet-store white sturgeon must come from a registered aquaculture facility.
- Confirm current details directly. Ask whether fish are actually available, their size, shipping or pickup arrangements, and whether the seller will ship to your location. Past sales, displays and hatchery operations do not establish present stock.
- Plan for the adult fish, not just the sale size. Ask a qualified specialist what long-term housing the identified species requires before committing.
Will a juvenile sturgeon fit in a home aquarium?
Do not treat a small sale size as a long-term space requirement. British Columbia reports typical adult white-sturgeon lengths of 1.6–2.1 metres and a maximum of 6.1 metres. These figures apply to white sturgeon, not every sturgeon species, but they make clear why you should establish the adult housing plan before buying: Province of British Columbia white-sturgeon profile.

Do not release a fish into a river, lake or other public water. California’s regulation states: “Under no condition shall any live aquaculture product sold at an aquarium or pet store be planted in any waters of the state.” Check the rules for your location and make a responsible rehoming plan before buying.
