What Should the Salinity Be in a Saltwater Fish Tank?

For a typical reef aquarium, aim for about 34–35 ppt and keep salinity stable. Species, measurement method and temperature affect how to interpret the target.

For a typical reef aquarium, aim for about 34–35 parts per thousand (ppt), commonly shown as roughly 1.025–1.026 specific gravity (SG). Treat that as a practical reef target, not a universal setting for every saltwater fish: species and life stage can affect the right salinity, and stability matters.

What salinity should a reef tank have?

University of Florida IFAS Extension gives 34 ppt / SG 1.026 as a reef-tank target and lists 35 ppt / SG 1.026 as a normal-range value in its 2023 4-H Marine Aquarium Project Book. The small difference in ppt alongside the same SG is a reminder not to imply more precision than the measurement method supports.

Average seawater is approximately 35 ppt in the University of Hawaii’s salinity learning resource. That ocean context is useful, but it does not establish a target for every aquarium or species.

Why the right target depends on the inhabitants

A typical reef target is a sensible starting point for a reef aquarium, but saltwater tanks may hold animals with different needs. Florida International University’s aquatic animal care guidance notes that salinity requirements and tolerances vary among species and life stages, and advises making changes gradually. Check care guidance for the animals in your tank rather than assuming one number suits all marine or estuarine species.

Agriculture Solutions Salinity Refractometer for Seawater and Marine Fishkeeping Aquarium 0-100 PPT with Automatic Temperature Compensation
  • Measure salt water or salinity of water, ideal for aquariums and marine monitoring.
  • Measures on 2 scales, Specific Gravity (D 20/20) and parts per thousand.
  • Features automatic temperature compensation.
  • Comes with hard case, dropper, screwdriver, user manual and cleaning cloth.
  • The main part is made of chromium, it's very durable.

How to measure aquarium salinity

Measure the water rather than estimating from how much salt mix you added. A refractometer or hydrometer can be used to check salinity or a related density measure; use the unit scale shown by your instrument and follow its calibration and temperature instructions.

Method What to check
Refractometer Read the scale and follow the instrument’s calibration and temperature instructions.
Hydrometer Interpret the density-based reading using the instrument’s calibration and temperature instructions.

The cited aquarium guidance recognizes both methods but does not establish that a particular brand or model is best, or compare the accuracy of specific products. For consistent tracking, use the same instrument and method when possible.

Hallocool Salinity Refractometer for Aquarium Seawater Marine Fishkeeping
  • MEASURES ON 2 SCALES - Aquarium Refractometer features specific gravity (D20/20) 1.000-1.070 and parts per thousand 0~100‰ , allow to get two results in different units by one test
  • WIDELY USE - Salinity Refractometer measures saltwater, salinity of water or seawater, ideal for aquariums, marine monitoring, fish-keeping, and saltwater pools
  • ATC FUNCTION - Saltwater refractometer with automatic temperature compensation (ATC) function, allow you to obtain the accurate result faster and easier
  • EASY TO USE - Put 2-3 drops of sample on the refracotmter’s prism, towards light, read the accurate readings through the optics eyepiece directly
  • DURABLE MATERIAL: The optic salinity tester is made of aluminum and ABS rubber, anti-rust, non-staining and resistant abrasion. Portable Refractometer comes with plastic case, mini screwdriver,a dropper and a cleaning cloth

Do not treat ppt and SG as interchangeable through one exact conversion unless the instrument or a reliable conversion reference specifies the temperature basis. Density changes with temperature, so a hydrometer or SG reading needs to be interpreted according to its calibration conditions.

How evaporation changes salinity—and what to top off with

Water evaporates but salt does not. As water is lost, the remaining aquarium water becomes more concentrated unless you replace the evaporation with fresh water. Use fresh RO water for routine evaporation top-offs; adding saltwater for each top-off adds salt the tank did not lose and can make salinity climb.

SunGrow Measure Salinity of Water with Aquarium Refractometer, Remarkable Accuracy, Easy Reading
  • Specifically Designed Refractometer For Saltwater Aquarium --- The algorithm is made specifically for testing seawater and saltwater. This is different from a standard refractometer which is not calibrated to check salinity of aquarium water and will give an error in your readings.
  • Automatic Temperature Calibration --- The calibration process should be carried out with both the room and the instrument at 68° F. The refractive index of a liquid changes with temperature. Due to the automatic temperature calibration, any changes in ambient temperature from 50° F- 86° F will not affect the accuracy of the reading.
  • Easy And Clear Reading For Saltwater Aquariums And Reef Tanks --- The refractometer comes with a focus adjustment on the eyepiece, this will give you clarity of the optics and a sharp line for easy reading.
  • Comes In A Solid Case Includes Pipette And Calibration Tool --- This refractometer is not only built extremely well, but it comes with a durable hard case for easy storage of the refractometer when not in use. It also includes a calibration tool and a pipette.
  • Keep Your Fish And Plant Life In Optimal Well-being --- Pure saltwater is crucial for the vitality of your marine or reef aquarium. Use this refractometer to measure the salinity of the water, the target level of salinity in a reef tank should be 35 ppt.

For a water change, prepare appropriately mixed saltwater to replace the saltwater removed. Top-offs and water changes replace different things: fresh water replaces evaporation, while prepared saltwater replaces aquarium water removed during maintenance.

How to respond to a reading outside the target

  • Confirm the reading with the instrument’s calibration and temperature instructions, and check that you are reading the intended scale.
  • Consider whether recent evaporation or a top-off could explain a change.
  • If the livestock has a special salinity requirement, follow species-specific care guidance.
  • Make corrections gradually; FIU’s care guidance advises slow salinity changes because tolerances vary by species and life stage.

How much do aquarium targets vary?

There is no single figure that applies to every system. As an example rather than a home-tank prescription, a 2016 peer-reviewed aquarium microbiome study described the Shedd Aquarium system at 33 ± 3 ppt, using commercial artificial sea salt mix and monitoring salinity twice weekly. Institutional system conditions are not proof that the same range is appropriate for a particular home aquarium.
