What to Feed a Baby Rabbit When Its Mother Is Absent

A baby rabbit alone may not be orphaned. Leave healthy wild kits in their nest, seek a rehabilitator for signs of trouble, and get veterinary guidance for domestic orphans.

If you found a wild baby rabbit alone, do not feed it: a mother rabbit normally leaves the nest and returns briefly, and an empty nest does not mean the babies are orphaned. Leave a warm, uninjured kit in its nest and contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator promptly if it is cold, weak, injured, covered with fly eggs, declining, or has had contact with a cat or dog. For a confirmed domestic orphan, ask a rabbit-savvy veterinarian what formula, amount, and feeding method to use.

I found a baby rabbit alone—what should I do?

First work out whether it is a wild rabbit or a domestic rabbit. A wild kit in an intact nest is usually best left where it is. Mothers do not stay beside the nest; they return briefly to nurse, so a parent may simply be away when you look.

If the wild kit is warm and uninjured

  • Leave it in the nest, if the nest is intact and the kit is warm, quiet, and uninjured.
  • Keep people and pets away and do not offer food, formula, or water.
  • If you are unsure whether the nest is active, contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator for advice rather than taking the kit home.

Open-eyed, mobile young rabbits may be alone. Aark Wildlife Rehabilitation and Education Center says young rabbits leave the nest at around three weeks, but that general milestone does not establish that an injured or compromised animal is safe without assessment. See Aark’s guidance on finding a rabbit.

If the kit may be in trouble

Contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator promptly if the rabbit is cold, weak, injured, has fly eggs on it, appears to be declining, or has been touched or carried by a cat or dog. Roanoke Wildlife Rescue advises against feeding wild kits unless a licensed rehabilitator specifically tells you to. Do not give food, formula, or water while you are seeking help; if containment is needed, follow the rehabilitator’s instructions. See Roanoke Wildlife Rescue’s baby-rabbit guidance.

What do I feed a baby rabbit?

The answer depends on whether the rabbit is wild or domestic and whether a professional has confirmed that it needs hand-feeding. For a wild rabbit, do not feed it unless a licensed wildlife rehabilitator instructs you to. For a confirmed domestic orphan whose mother cannot nurse, seek direction from a rabbit-savvy veterinarian before choosing a formula or feeding it.

Confirmed domestic orphan

Rabbit.org describes kitten milk replacer (KMR) and regular goat’s milk as possible hand-feeding options for domestic orphan kits; Merck Veterinary Manual also includes KMR in its general orphaned-rabbit reference. Their guidance is not a universal prescription: the appropriate formula, quantity, and technique depend on the kit’s age, weight, and condition. Ask a rabbit-savvy veterinarian for an individual plan. Sources differ on replacers and protocols for different rabbit contexts, which is another reason not to apply a wild-animal recipe to an unidentified kit.

Do not improvise with cow’s milk, human infant formula, or a random pet milk product. Rabbit.org’s orphan-feeding guidance and Merck’s orphaned native mammal management reference discuss formula protocols; Merck notes that a neonatal rabbit’s stomach capacity is limited and warns that overfeeding can cause regurgitation, aspiration pneumonia, or diarrhea. Do not use an online amount or technique in place of veterinary direction.

How quickly do kits develop?

Age milestones vary by species and source. Merck Veterinary Manual says eastern cottontails’ eyes open at 7–10 days and they wean at 3–4 weeks; for domestic rabbits, it gives about 10 days for eyes to open and 4–6 weeks for weaning. Rabbit.org advises keeping domestic kits with their mothers for at least eight weeks. These are different kinds of guidance—species development milestones versus a recommendation about time with the mother—not a single universal feeding timetable. See Merck’s rabbit-care reference and Rabbit.org’s Baby Bunny Basics.

How can I tell if the mother rabbit is gone?

You generally cannot tell from a single check: a mother’s absence from the nest is normal, and seeing no adult nearby is not proof that a kit is orphaned. An intact nest with warm, uninjured babies is not, by itself, a reason to remove or feed them. If a kit has signs of injury or illness, or you remain concerned about its condition, ask a licensed wildlife rehabilitator to assess the situation.

Can I give a baby rabbit cow’s milk?

No. Do not use cow’s milk as an improvised substitute. A wild kit should not be fed unless a licensed wildlife rehabilitator directs you; a confirmed domestic orphan needs a rabbit-savvy veterinarian’s advice on formula and feeding.
