Animal-like floor exercises are drawing attention because they turn familiar fitness goals—mobility, coordination, balance and muscular endurance—into a playful bodyweight practice. Three moves highlighted in the trend are the loaded beast, cat crawl and frog. They can add variety to a strength routine, but they are not a complete muscle-building program by themselves.
What “primal movement” means
Here, primal movement means bodyweight exercises performed on the floor, using animal-like positions and patterns such as crawling, squatting and transitioning between shapes. It is a broad label, not one standardized workout. A formal Animal Flow routine is a specific program with wrist mobilizations, activations, form-specific stretches, traveling forms, and switches and transitions. Its official foundational positions are Ape, Beast and Crab.
The three exercises below are the moves named in Tom’s Guide’s October 2, 2026 article about the trend. They are not interchangeable with a bear crawl, crab walk or ape reach, which are separate exercises.
Three primal moves to try
Loaded beast
From a loaded, crouched position, move horizontally forward and backward while keeping the body controlled. Tom’s Guide describes this as involving the hips, legs, upper body and core, and as a way to challenge lower-body mobility and shoulder stability. Those are coaching descriptions, not measured guarantees of a particular result.

Cat crawl
Crawl in a controlled pattern, coordinating the arms and legs as the body moves. Tom’s Guide presents the cat crawl as a whole-body coordination task that engages the core and asks both sides of the body to work together.
Frog
The frog uses a low, squat-like position and an active push through the upper body. Tom’s Guide describes it as a way to practice pushing power, upper-body strength, and hip mobility and control. Those skills may be useful in poses such as crow or handstand, but the frog alone does not prepare someone to perform either pose.

What these movements can—and can’t—do
Compound movements can contribute to strength, flexibility, balance and muscular endurance that help with everyday tasks. Cleveland Clinic sports medicine physician Evan Peck, MD, describes primal movement as one possible way to improve fitness, while cautioning that it is not a complete workout on its own for most people whose goal is to build muscle. For that goal, include heavier resistance training as well.
Animal Flow’s own FAQ says its program is designed to improve mobility, flexibility, strength, power, endurance and muscular coordination, and summarizes research specific to the program. That is the program’s stated design and evidence summary, not an independent consensus about every exercise called “primal.” A 2025 paper describes a 12-week supplementary training intervention and exercise progressions, but the available information does not establish a verified effect-size figure. The duration of a study is not itself proof of a particular benefit.

How primal movement compares with strength training
| Consideration | Primal movement | Conventional resistance training |
|---|---|---|
| Equipment and access | Often uses bodyweight and floor space; no special equipment is necessary for the moves described. | May use weights or machines, though resistance training can also be done with bodyweight. |
| Movement emphasis | Floor-based patterns, transitions, coordination and range of motion are prominent. | Exercises can be selected to train specific muscles and movement patterns. |
| Progression and load | Progression may come from movement control, range, duration or complexity; these three moves do not prescribe a standardized loading plan. | External resistance makes it straightforward to increase load in measurable increments. |
| Useful role | A way to practice movement and muscular endurance, and to add variety. | Important when the goal includes a heavier strength stimulus or a structured muscle-building plan. |
Neither approach is established by these sources as superior to the other, and there is no basis here for claiming that primal movement prevents injury. Many people can use the approaches together: movement practice for coordination and mobility, plus appropriately programmed resistance exercise for strength.
How to start safely
- Begin with a small, controlled range of motion rather than trying to travel quickly or make a movement larger.
- Stop if a movement hurts. Peck’s guidance is: “You shouldn’t feel like jelly after strength training or a primal movement workout, and it shouldn’t hurt.”
- If you have a chronic condition or a previous injury, Cleveland Clinic advises consulting a physician before beginning a new exercise program. Consider coaching from a qualified professional if you are unsure how to perform a movement.
- A clear floor is enough to get started. A mat is optional if you want more comfort on the floor.
For a simpler crawling pattern, a knees-down bear crawl is one possible beginner variation, not one of the three moves above. The instructional cues for that variation include keeping the back flat, abdomen braced and movement controlled; they should not be treated as specific instructions for the loaded beast, cat crawl or frog.

Why coaches are talking about moving like animals
The appeal is practical as well as playful: floor-based movement asks people to coordinate multiple body parts, change levels and control their bodies in space without relying on equipment. It can make exercise feel different from a conventional set-and-repetition workout. That can be a useful reason to try it, provided the movements suit your ability and goals.
Broader physical-activity guidance offers context, not proof for this particular trend. The UK government said its refreshed Chief Medical Officers’ guidance, published July 10, 2026, reflects emerging evidence on light-intensity activity, sedentary behaviour, strength and balance, and activity accumulated across the week; it did not introduce new activity targets. Those general recommendations do not establish a special benefit for animal flow.
