A Yorkipoo is a cross between a Yorkshire Terrier and a Toy or Miniature Poodle. This small companion dog can be affectionate, clever, lively, and low-shedding—but it is not a predictable “designer breed” with a fixed adult size, coat, or temperament.
The mix may suit an apartment or smaller home, provided its exercise, grooming, training, and need for company are taken seriously. Its small body also means it needs protection from rough handling, falls, larger dogs, and accidental injuries.

What is a Yorkipoo?
The Yorkipoo is a relatively recent crossbreed developed from the Yorkshire Terrier and Toy or Miniature Poodle. The cross became popular as a small companion dog that might shed less than many other dogs and adapt well to indoor living.

It is not an American Kennel Club-recognized purebred breed, and there is no universally accepted Yorkipoo breed standard. As a result, two Yorkipoos can look and behave noticeably differently—even when they come from the same litter.
A breeder cannot reliably guarantee a puppy’s final height, weight, coat texture, color, or allergy performance. A puppy that looks tiny at eight weeks may still grow larger than expected, particularly when a Miniature Poodle is in its background.
Appearance and size
Yorkipoos are generally small, fine-boned dogs, but their appearance is variable. Some have the long, silky coat and narrow face associated with the Yorkshire Terrier. Others have a curlier coat, rounder outline, or more Poodle-like muzzle.
Common variations include:
- Erect or floppy ears
- Straight, wavy, or curly hair
- A long, feathered tail or a shorter-looking tail
- Solid, bicolor, or tricolor coats
- Black, tan, brown, cream, gray, silver, red, apricot, chocolate, and mixed coloring
Published size ranges commonly put Yorkipoos at about 7–15 inches tall and 3–15 pounds. The lower end is especially small and should not be treated as a target or marketing feature. Terms such as “teacup Yorkipoo” do not describe an officially recognized variety and may be used to promote unhealthy undersized puppies.

A well-socialized Yorkipoo is often affectionate, people-oriented, playful, alert, and bright. The Poodle side may contribute trainability and a need for mental activity, while the Yorkshire Terrier side can bring terrier confidence, boldness, prey drive, vocal behavior, and occasional stubbornness.
That combination can produce a dog that learns tricks quickly but also notices every sound in the hallway. Barking is more likely when the dog is bored, alarmed, under-exercised, or left alone without preparation. Some Yorkipoos also develop separation-related behaviors because they are highly attached to their owners.
Temperament is not guaranteed by the label. Look for a puppy or adult dog that is curious and able to recover from ordinary new experiences. Persistent fear, extreme shyness, or aggressive behavior should not be dismissed as normal Yorkipoo character.
Are Yorkipoos good with children and other pets?
They can be good family companions, but their small size changes the safety requirements. A Yorkipoo can be seriously injured by being dropped, stepped on, squeezed, or knocked from furniture.

Older children who understand how to handle dogs gently are usually a better match than toddlers. Children should not carry the dog around unsupervised, disturb it while eating or sleeping, or treat it like a toy.
Many Yorkipoos can live with other dogs if introductions are gradual and well managed. The Yorkie influence may produce enough prey drive to make close supervision important around rabbits, rodents, birds, cats, and other small animals. Never assume that a tiny dog will be harmless to a smaller pet.
Exercise and mental stimulation
A Yorkipoo may be small enough for indoor games but is not necessarily low-energy. A practical starting point for a healthy adult is roughly 20–30 minutes of daily exercise, divided into a walk and active play if needed. Puppies, older dogs, and dogs with medical conditions may need a different plan.
Useful activities include:
- Short walks with opportunities to sniff
- Indoor fetch or tug played safely
- Food puzzles and scatter feeding
- Trick training and basic obedience
- Scent games
- Small-scale agility exercises without high-impact jumps
Under-stimulation can show up as barking, chewing, attention-seeking, or restlessness. On the other hand, do not encourage repeated leaps from sofas, beds, or stair landings. Toy-size dogs can be injured by falls and rough, high-impact play even when they appear agile.
Training a Yorkipoo
Yorkipoos are usually capable learners, but intelligence does not remove the need for consistency. Use reward-based training, brief sessions, clear household rules, and frequent repetition. Harsh corrections can increase fear and may worsen barking or defensive behavior.
- Start with management. Use baby gates, a pen, or a crate to prevent accidents and unsafe wandering.
- Teach a predictable toilet schedule. Small dogs have small bladders and may need more frequent opportunities than owners expect.
- Reward immediately. Give the food reward or praise as soon as the desired behavior occurs.
- Build alone time gradually. Practice short, calm periods apart before expecting the dog to remain alone for hours.
- Socialize carefully. Introduce people, calm dogs, household sounds, grooming equipment, travel, surfaces, and veterinary handling in positive, controlled steps.
Do not force a frightened puppy into a crowded dog park or chaotic gathering. Overwhelming exposure can increase fear rather than create confidence. Early puppyhood—particularly the first three months—is an important period for positive social learning.
Grooming requirements
Yorkipoos are often low-shedding, but their coats are not low-maintenance. A silky Yorkie-like coat can tangle, while a wavy or curly Poodle-like coat can mat close to the skin.
For a longer or curlier coat, daily brushing is the safest routine. Check the armpits, behind the ears, under the collar, around the legs, and beneath the tail, where knots develop quickly. Mats can pull on the skin, conceal irritation, limit movement, and make clipping painful.

Many owners choose a short pet clip and arrange professional grooming about every four to six weeks. The correct interval depends on coat length and how quickly the hair grows. The routine should also include nail trims, ear checks, bathing when needed, and cleaning around the eyes.
Begin grooming training before the adult coat arrives. Briefly handle the puppy’s feet, ears, face, and tail, then introduce the brush, clippers, dryer, and grooming table with treats. A dog that panics during grooming may require a slower training plan and veterinary or professional-groomer guidance.
Are Yorkipoos hypoallergenic?
No dog is completely hypoallergenic, and a Yorkipoo is no exception. The mix may shed relatively little, but allergies can be triggered by dander, saliva, skin secretions, and other allergens—not only by loose hair.
Some allergy sufferers react less strongly to one individual dog than another, but neither a Yorkipoo nor its parent breeds can guarantee an allergy-free home. Anyone with significant allergies should spend extended time with the specific dog before committing and should discuss the decision with a medical professional.
Yorkipoo health concerns
Being a crossbreed does not eliminate inherited health risks. A Yorkipoo may inherit conditions associated with either the Yorkshire Terrier or the Toy or Miniature Poodle. This does not mean an individual dog will develop all—or any—of these problems.
| Concern | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Patellar luxation | The kneecap moves abnormally or slips out of position; it is relevant to both parent breeds. |
| Eye disorders | Eye examinations are recommended in health-testing guidance for the parent breeds. |
| Progressive retinal atrophy, including PRCD-PRA | A potentially serious inherited eye disease for which relevant Poodle lines can be DNA-tested. |
| Dental and periodontal disease | Small mouths and crowded teeth can make daily dental care especially important. |
| Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease | A hip-joint disorder reported in Toy and Miniature Poodles. |
| Other disorders | Epilepsy, portosystemic shunt, hypothyroidism, and skin or gastrointestinal problems may also occur, but are not inevitable. |
Dental care
Dental disease is one of the most important routine health concerns in small dogs. Daily brushing is best; brushing several times each week is still more useful than doing nothing. Use toothpaste made for dogs, never human toothpaste, and ask your veterinarian how often the dog needs professional dental examinations or cleaning.
Questions for a breeder
Because there is no single Yorkipoo health-testing protocol, ask about the actual parent breeds used. The American Kennel Club lists the following relevant screening for the parents:
- Yorkshire Terrier: patella evaluation and ophthalmologist examination.
- Toy Poodle: patella evaluation, ophthalmologist examination, and PRCD-PRA DNA testing.
- Miniature Poodle: patella evaluation, hip evaluation, ophthalmologist examination, and PRCD-PRA DNA testing.
Ask to see the records, not just a claim that the parents are “vet checked.” A DNA panel or registration certificate is not the same as comprehensive health screening. Even a CHIC number confirms that required tests were performed and recorded; it does not guarantee that every result was normal.

Feeding a Yorkipoo
Feed a complete and balanced food appropriate for the dog’s life stage, size, activity, and body condition. Portion charts are starting points, not precise prescriptions. Monitor weight and body shape and ask your veterinarian to adjust calories if the dog gains or loses weight.
Treats and table scraps can account for a large share of a small dog’s calories, so keep them modest. Puppies at the smallest end of the size range need particular attention to regular meals and energy levels. Weakness, tremors, collapse, extreme lethargy, vomiting, or refusing food warrants prompt veterinary advice.
Living with a Yorkipoo
A Yorkipoo can adapt to an apartment or a house. Daily activity and enrichment matter more than having a large yard. However, apartment living does not automatically mean quiet living: alert barking can disturb neighbors unless it is managed through training, exercise, environmental changes, and realistic expectations.
This mix often prefers frequent interaction and may struggle in a home where it is routinely left alone for long periods. Provide a safe area, practice settling independently, and avoid making departures and arrivals dramatic. Keep the dog away from open stairways and unsafe furniture jumps, and supervise interactions with larger dogs.

A responsible breeder, rescue, or rehoming source should be able to discuss the dog’s health, behavior, background, and likely needs without promising a perfectly predictable result.
Before bringing one home:
- Confirm whether the Poodle parent is Toy or Miniature.
- Ask to identify the sire and dam and see their health-screening results.
- Review vaccination, parasite-control, veterinary, and microchip records.
- See where puppies are raised and how they are exposed to people and everyday handling.
- Ask about the written contract, return policy, temperament, and family health history.
- Expect an honest discussion of possible adult size and coat variation.
Walk away from guaranteed adult size, color, coat, or allergy performance; claims that the mix is automatically healthier; pressure to pay immediately; refusal to show records; multiple unrelated litters; or the use of “teacup” marketing. A seller who treats a designer label or DNA test as proof of quality is not providing meaningful evidence of responsible breeding.

FAQ
Is a Yorkipoo a good first dog?
It can be, if the owner is prepared for frequent grooming, daily interaction, careful house-training, and possible barking. Its small size does not make it maintenance-free. A calm adult from a reputable rescue may be easier to assess than a puppy with an uncertain adult temperament.
How big will a Yorkipoo get?
Published estimates are about 7–15 inches and 3–15 pounds, but the final size is not guaranteed. Toy versus Miniature Poodle ancestry and the size of both parents are especially relevant.

Do Yorkipoos shed?
Many Yorkipoos shed relatively little, but coat traits vary. Low-shedding does not mean hypoallergenic, and the dog still needs regular brushing to prevent tangles and mats.
How often should a Yorkipoo be groomed?
Long or curly coats may need daily brushing. Owners who keep the coat short commonly book professional grooming about every four to six weeks, depending on hair growth and coat condition.
Are Yorkipoos easy to house-train?
They can learn, but small dogs often need more frequent bathroom opportunities because of their small bladders. Close supervision, a consistent schedule, immediate rewards, and suitable confinement work better than punishment.
Can a Yorkipoo live with cats?
Some can, but the Yorkshire Terrier side may contribute prey drive. Introduce them gradually, provide escape spaces for the cat, and supervise interactions—especially with kittens or small pets.

How much exercise does a Yorkipoo need?
Many healthy adults do well with roughly 20–30 minutes of daily exercise plus play and mental enrichment. Adjust the amount for age, health, fitness, weather, and the individual dog.
The Bottom Line
A Yorkipoo can be an affectionate, entertaining companion for a household that wants a small dog but is ready for a surprisingly busy one. Expect variation rather than guarantees: the coat may be silky or curly, the dog may be quiet or very vocal, and the adult size may depend heavily on whether the Poodle parent is Toy or Miniature.
The best match is chosen on temperament and health evidence—not on promises of a “teacup” size or allergy-free living. Plan for daily activity, reward-based training, regular brushing and grooming, dental care, and careful supervision around children, stairs, furniture, larger dogs, and small animals.
