The King Shepherd is a very large, intelligent shepherd developed in the United States during the 1990s. It was bred to combine the working ability and familiar outline of the German Shepherd Dog with a heavier, more substantial body and a guardian-oriented temperament.

This is not an AKC- or FCI-recognized breed, and there is no single worldwide standard for it. Depending on the registry or breeder, the King Shepherd may be described as a developing breed, a hybrid breed, or a distinct breed type. That matters when comparing size, acceptable colors, ancestry, and health claims.

What is a King Shepherd?

The King Shepherd is a large American shepherd type associated with breeders Shelley Watts-Cross and David Turkheimer. The development project began in the early 1990s, with the aim of producing a bigger, guardian-oriented dog with the general appearance and working character of a German Shepherd.

Reported foundation breeds include American- and European-bred German Shepherd Dogs, Alaskan Malamutes, Great Pyrenees, and Shiloh Shepherds. The detailed foundation pedigree is not documented in one universally authoritative historical record, however, and modern King Shepherd breeding programs do not all follow an identical formula. There is no accepted rule that every King Shepherd must be a particular percentage of German Shepherd or another breed.

The King Shepherd Club of America describes the dog as a hybrid breed that remains in development. Other registries publish their own breed standards. The most accurate description is therefore a developing American breed or breed type with multiple registry standards.

Is the King Shepherd recognized by the AKC?

No. The King Shepherd is not included in the American Kennel Club’s official list of recognized breeds. It is also absent from the Fédération Cynologique Internationale’s current nomenclature.

Some independent and rare-breed organizations do register King Shepherds, including the American Rare Breed Association, King Shepherd Club of America, American King Shepherd Club, Continental Kennel Club, American Pet Registry, Dog Registry of America, Eastern Rare Breed Dog Club, States Kennel Club, and World Wide Kennel Club.

Registration with one of these organizations does not mean that all King Shepherds meet the same standard. It also does not prove that an individual dog is healthy, correctly bred, or suitable for a particular home.

King Shepherd size

King Shepherd size figures vary because the breed has no single governing standard. The following figures show why online descriptions can differ:

Source Male Female
ARBA standard At least 27 inches and 110 pounds; preferred weight 130–150 pounds At least 25 inches and 75 pounds; preferred weight 90–110 pounds
Continental Kennel Club 27–32 inches and 100–150 pounds 25–30 inches and 80–120 pounds

The ARBA standard defines its minimum height at maturity as three years of age. A puppy may therefore appear to be “undersized” simply because it has not finished developing. Conversely, a dog should not be pushed toward a particular weight to satisfy an advertisement or headline number. A healthy King Shepherd should have a suitable body condition, sound movement, and weight proportionate to its frame.

Appearance and coat

The intended King Shepherd is a muscular, heavy-boned, slightly rectangular shepherd. It should be substantial without being so bulky that it loses athletic movement. Breed standards generally call for a deep, broad chest, erect triangular ears, a strong level topline, and a tail reaching approximately to the hocks.

It has a protective double coat with a dense undercoat. Depending on the line, the outer coat may be:

  • Smooth: shorter and dense, with a thick insulating undercoat.
  • Rough: longer furnishings around the neck, ears, limbs, feet, and tail, but not an excessively long or silky coat.

Standards may call these varieties smooth and rough, or coarsehaired and longhaired. A short, thin, mole-like coat is considered faulty in some standards.

King Shepherd colors

Black-based patterns are commonly associated with the King Shepherd, including sable, wolf agouti, black saddle, black with tan or other colored points, and solid black. Depending on the registry, markings may be tan, gold, cream, or silver.

Color rules are not identical between organizations. For example, the ARBA standard disqualifies white, blue, and liver-colored dogs and requires an all-black nose, while the Continental Kennel Club’s wording differs. Ask which registry standard a breeder is following before treating a color as acceptable or unacceptable.

King Shepherd temperament

A well-bred King Shepherd is intended to be loyal, self-confident, vigilant, intelligent, and responsive to training. The desired dog should be protective without displaying indiscriminate aggression. Breed standards describe a dog capable of distinguishing a genuine threat from an ordinary person or situation when it has been properly socialized and trained.

Those are goals, not guarantees. Individual temperament is influenced by genetics, early handling, socialization, training, health, and the environment. A large protective dog with poor nerve stability or inadequate management can become difficult and dangerous, regardless of its pedigree.

Expect a King Shepherd to notice visitors, unusual sounds, animals, and activity around the home. Some will be reserved with strangers rather than immediately friendly. Early socialization should expose the puppy calmly and gradually to people, dogs, surfaces, noises, vehicles, handling, and everyday environments. The goal is not to make the dog greet everyone; it is to build a calm, controlled response.

Training and socialization

King Shepherds are intelligent and generally trainable, but their size, strength, and protective instincts make basic obedience a safety requirement rather than a hobby. Start training as soon as the puppy comes home, using reward-based methods and clear household rules.

  1. Teach name recognition, recall, loose-leash walking, sit, down, stay, and a reliable release cue.
  2. Practice calm behavior when someone knocks, enters the home, or passes the property.
  3. Reward the dog for disengaging from barking, staring, chasing, or overexcitement.
  4. Condition the dog to accept veterinary handling, grooming, nail care, and equipment.
  5. Continue structured training through adolescence, when guarding behavior and physical strength may increase.

Avoid encouraging aggression as a shortcut to “protection.” A dog that is taught to react indiscriminately is not a dependable guard dog. It is a liability. Positive reinforcement, impulse-control exercises, careful introductions, and professional help from a qualified trainer are better choices.

Interactions with young children should always be supervised. This applies even to a friendly dog: a King Shepherd can knock over a child accidentally, guard food or toys, or react unpredictably when startled. Children should not be expected to manage the dog’s behavior.

Exercise and home requirements

A King Shepherd needs more than a fenced yard. Plan for daily physical activity, training, social contact, and mental work. Suitable activities may include brisk walks, hiking, scent games, retrieving, obedience practice, and other controlled work appropriate for the dog’s age and joints.

A house with a large, secure yard may be convenient, but a yard does not replace interaction or exercise. The breed club notes that a King Shepherd can live in an apartment if it receives plenty of exercise and has room to stretch. In practice, apartment living is most realistic for an adult dog with good household manners and an owner able to provide several purposeful outings each day.

Long periods of isolation can lead to boredom, frustration, destructive behavior, excessive barking, or low mood. Do not choose this breed merely because it looks imposing or because you want a dog to remain outside and guard the property.

King Shepherd grooming

The coat requires regular brushing, with more intensive work during seasonal shedding. A practical routine is:

  • Brush at least once or twice weekly during ordinary shedding.
  • Brush more frequently when the undercoat is being blown.
  • Check behind the ears, around the tail, and on the feathered legs for tangles.
  • Keep nails trimmed and inspect the feet after outdoor activity.
  • Clean the ears when needed and brush the teeth regularly.

Shaving a double-coated King Shepherd is generally unnecessary and does not reliably keep the dog cooler. Bathe when dirty or when advised by a veterinarian, using a dog-safe shampoo and drying the dense undercoat thoroughly.

King Shepherd health

There is not enough large, independent, peer-reviewed research to establish a definitive disease profile or reliable disease prevalence for King Shepherds. Claims that the breed is automatically healthier than the German Shepherd Dog are not supported by population-level evidence.

Its ancestry means that inherited orthopedic, eye, digestive, neurologic, and other problems remain possible. The American King Shepherd Club recommends that breeding dogs be screened for:

Rank #4
  • Hip dysplasia
  • Elbow dysplasia
  • Eye disease
  • Heart disease

Breed-club records discuss conditions reported in individual dogs, including eye disease, pannus, and exocrine pancreatic insufficiency. These records are useful leads but should not be treated as prevalence estimates for every King Shepherd.

German Shepherd research has reported predispositions involving hip dysplasia, degenerative myelopathy, exocrine pancreatic insufficiency, haemangiosarcoma, anal furunculosis, and lumbosacral disease. That research does not prove that King Shepherds have the same rates or risks, but it supports taking family health history and appropriate screening seriously.

Health checks to verify before buying

Ask for the registered names of both parents and verify the results yourself through the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals database where applicable. Check:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Hip evaluations.
  2. Elbow evaluations.
  3. Current eye examinations.
  4. Cardiac screening, when performed.
  5. DNA tests relevant to the actual ancestry and the breeder’s veterinary advice.
  6. Health information about siblings, parents, grandparents, and other close relatives.

Pay attention to what kind of result is being offered. A preliminary hip or elbow evaluation is not the same as a final adult evaluation, a PennHIP assessment, or an informal veterinarian’s interpretation. OFA preliminary evaluations may begin at four months, while published preliminary results require the dog to be at least 12 months old and permanently identified by microchip or tattoo.

A registration certificate, pedigree, or “health guarantee” is not a substitute for test results. Be cautious if a breeder refuses to provide registered parent names, shows only a generic certificate, claims that the breed cannot inherit a particular problem, or insists that a registry label proves health.

How much does a King Shepherd eat?

Food needs vary with age, size, activity, metabolism, and the calorie density of the diet. Large-breed puppies should be fed a complete diet formulated for controlled growth, with portions adjusted by body condition and veterinary advice. Overfeeding during growth can place unnecessary stress on developing joints.

For an adult, divide the daily ration into at least two meals rather than feeding one enormous meal. Measure food, monitor the dog’s waist and ribs, and account for treats used during training. Because large, deep-chested dogs may be at risk of gastric dilatation-volvulus, discuss meal management and warning signs of bloat with your veterinarian. Seek emergency care for repeated unproductive retching, a swollen or painful abdomen, restlessness, weakness, or collapse.

Is a King Shepherd right for you?

This dog may suit an experienced owner who wants a large companion and is prepared to provide daily training, exercise, grooming, socialization, secure containment, and veterinary care. It is less suitable for someone seeking a low-maintenance dog, a dog that can live outdoors without interaction, or a guaranteed personal-protection animal.

Before committing, consider whether you can safely control a dog weighing well over 100 pounds, afford large-dog food and medical care, manage shedding, provide appropriate exercise in bad weather, and supervise interactions with visitors, children, and other animals. A stable adult rescue may be a better match than a puppy for some households, but its behavior and history should be assessed carefully.

FAQ

Is a King Shepherd a German Shepherd?

No. The King Shepherd was developed partly from German Shepherd Dogs and reportedly also involved Alaskan Malamutes, Great Pyrenees, and Shiloh Shepherds. It is a separate developing American breed type, not simply a large German Shepherd.

Is the King Shepherd an AKC breed?

No. The AKC does not currently recognize the King Shepherd, and the breed is not listed in the FCI’s current nomenclature. Several independent and rare-breed registries do register it.

How big will a King Shepherd get?

Published figures differ. The ARBA standard lists minimum mature heights of 27 inches for males and 25 inches for females. It gives a minimum male weight of 110 pounds and a minimum female weight of 75 pounds, with preferred ranges above those minimums. Other registries publish different ranges.

Are King Shepherds aggressive?

The desired temperament is vigilant and protective but stable and controllable, not indiscriminately aggressive. Individual behavior depends on breeding, socialization, training, health, and management. Because the dog is powerful, fearful or reactive behavior must be taken seriously.

Can a King Shepherd live in an apartment?

Potentially, if the owner provides substantial daily exercise, training, social contact, and opportunities to stretch. A yard is helpful but does not replace those needs. An adult with good manners may adapt more easily than a bored, untrained adolescent.

Are King Shepherds healthier than German Shepherds?

There is no strong population-level evidence proving that all King Shepherds are healthier. They may inherit health risks from their German Shepherd and other ancestral breeds, so hip, elbow, eye, cardiac, DNA, and family health information should be investigated.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How long does a King Shepherd live?

The Continental Kennel Club lists 11–14 years, but this is a breed-information estimate rather than a result from a large, published population-wide lifespan study.

The Bottom Line

The King Shepherd is a large, intelligent, protective American shepherd type with substantial exercise, training, socialization, and management requirements. It has support from several independent registries but is not recognized by the AKC or FCI, and standards vary between organizations. If you are considering one, prioritize stable temperament, responsible breeding, independently verified health testing, and a realistic plan for living with a very large dog—not registry labels or claims that the breed is automatically healthier.
