There is no universally best large dog breed for a family: the right fit depends on the individual dog, the children’s ages and behavior, and the adults’ ability to provide care, training, and supervision. Great Danes, Mastiffs, Bullmastiffs, Saint Bernards, Newfoundlands, Bernese Mountain Dogs, Great Pyrenees, Leonbergers, Boxers, and Collies are candidates to learn about—not guarantees of safety or suitability.

Large dogs can be strong, costly to care for, and difficult for children to manage. Before choosing one, consider exercise, training, grooming, space, transport, and veterinary costs, and assess the individual dog with a reputable breeder, rescue or shelter, and veterinarian.

How to use this shortlist

This is a practical group of breeds to research, not an objective ranking or a claim that every dog of a breed is suitable for every household. Breed descriptions suggest questions to ask; they cannot predict an individual dog’s temperament or behavior. The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) advises considering a dog’s individual characteristics and the family’s ability to provide daily care.

Compare each candidate against your family’s actual routine: exercise and mental stimulation, training and handling, grooming and shedding, children’s ages, home and vehicle space, and the adults’ ability to manage a powerful dog. The AVMA notes that food, boarding, medication, and some veterinary procedures may cost more for larger dogs, and that large-breed dogs tend to have shorter lifespans than smaller dogs.

The breed notes in this table are drawn from the American Kennel Club’s large-breed overview and its child-focused breed listing. These are starting points for research, not safety ratings.

What to know about each breed

Great Dane

The AKC describes the Great Dane as calm and loving and notes its role as a family pet. Daily exercise and minimal grooming are listed as care considerations. Its size and strength still make early manners training, adult handling, and close supervision around children important.

Mastiff

The AKC describes the Mastiff as a gentle, loyal companion that bonds closely with family, with light exercise and minimal grooming listed. A giant dog still requires room, a realistic budget, suitable transport, and adults able to manage it safely.

Bullmastiff

The AKC describes the Bullmastiff as docile and sweet-natured at home and also a natural guardian. Low exercise and grooming needs are listed, but guarding tendencies and physical power make careful assessment and training especially important.

Saint Bernard

The AKC describes the Saint Bernard as mellow and good with children. Families should also plan for shedding, particularly during shed seasons, and drool. A calm reputation does not remove the need for supervision and training.

Newfoundland

The AKC describes the Newfoundland as sweet-natured and devoted to its family. Daily brushing and exercise are among its care obligations. Consider whether your household can keep up with the coat and provide regular activity and companionship.

Bernese Mountain Dog

The AKC describes the Bernese Mountain Dog as strong, smart, gentle, and easygoing, with moderate exercise needs. Its long double coat sheds and needs regular brushing. Include coat care and the practical needs of a large dog in your decision.

Great Pyrenees

The Great Pyrenees was developed as a livestock guardian. The AKC notes its natural protectiveness, independent thinking, daily exercise, and weekly brushing needs. Those traits may be a poor match for some households, so ask how the individual dog responds to visitors, children, and everyday family routines.

Boxer

The Boxer appears on the AKC’s child-focused breed listing. Treat that as a reason to investigate the breed, not as a promise about an individual dog. Assess the dog’s temperament, energy, training, and fit with your children and daily routine.

Collie

The Collie also appears on the AKC’s child-focused breed listing. Before choosing one, consult current breed guidance and ask about the individual dog’s temperament, exercise needs, and coat care. A breed listing does not replace supervision or an individual assessment.

How to choose a large dog for your family

Match the dog to your real routine

Be honest about the time adults can reliably devote to exercise, training, grooming, and companionship. A yard does not by itself provide the interaction, activity, or training a dog needs. Ask the breeder, rescue, or shelter about the particular dog’s daily needs and observed behavior.

Consider the children’s ages and behavior

Young children may grab toys or treats, play roughly, or disturb a dog while it is eating or sleeping. Adults should actively supervise children around dogs and use barriers or separate spaces when they cannot supervise. Teach children not to approach, hug, corner, or disturb a dog that is resting or eating.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) advises that “A large, strong dog may not be the best fit for a home with young children.” Its guidance says it may be safest to wait until a child is older than four, while emphasizing the child’s individual maturity. This is pediatric guidance, not a universal cutoff; families should weigh their own circumstances.

Assess whether adults can manage the dog

Consider whether each adult who will handle the dog can safely manage it when excited, frightened, or pulling. Large-dog manners training matters: teach calm greetings, walking on leash, coming when called, and settling. A large dog training leash may be a useful tool for walks, but no leash guarantees safety or replaces training and adult control.

Budget for size-related care

Plan for food, veterinary care, medication, grooming, boarding, training, equipment, and transport. The AVMA notes that some costs may increase with a dog’s weight. The dog also needs suitable space at home and a workable plan for travel and veterinary visits.

Ask about the individual dog’s history and health

Ask breeders, rescues, or shelters about the dog’s observed temperament, history with children, and response to handling. Avoid choosing a pet based on looks, and do not adopt an animal with a known history of bites or aggression without seeking qualified professional advice. Ask for relevant health information and discuss the dog’s needs with a veterinarian.

Safety around children and dogs

No breed should be treated as automatically safe with children. The AVMA recommends always supervising young children around dogs and cautions that claims about particular breeds being more likely to bite are weakly supported. A breed list is not a safety ranking.

  1. Stay close and actively supervise young children around dogs.
  2. Teach children not to grab toys or treats, play roughly, or disturb a dog that is eating or sleeping.
  3. Give the dog a quiet place to rest, and separate dog and child when active supervision is not possible.
  4. Choose an individual dog carefully and ask about its history and behavior.
  5. Train the dog and teach every household member consistent, respectful handling.

For more guidance, see the AVMA’s dog-bite prevention guidance and the AAP article, “How old should our children be before we adopt a pet?”, updated April 22, 2026.

FAQ

Are large dogs safe for toddlers?

No breed is automatically safe for toddlers. A large, strong dog can accidentally injure a child, and rough play or disturbing a dog can increase risk. Adults should closely supervise and use physical separation when they cannot supervise.

Which large dog breeds are listed as good candidates for families?

The AKC’s large-breed overview and child-focused breed listing include the ten candidates discussed here. These lists are starting points for research, not rankings or guarantees that any breed or individual dog will suit a particular family.

How should I choose between a puppy and an adult dog?

Assess the individual dog’s temperament, history, and fit with your household, whether it is a puppy or an adult. Ask a reputable breeder, rescue, or shelter what they know about the dog, and involve a veterinarian when considering care needs.

Does a breed’s reputation mean it will be good with my children?

No. Breed descriptions describe general tendencies, not a guarantee about an individual dog. Consider your children’s ages and behavior, the dog’s observed temperament, and whether adults can provide daily care, training, and supervision.

The bottom line

Choose a large dog based on the individual animal and your family’s ability to meet its needs—not on a ranking or a promise that a breed is safe. Research exercise, grooming, handling, space, costs, and child supervision, then discuss the dog’s temperament and care with a reputable breeder, rescue or shelter, and veterinarian.
