Cats can move their ears independently, hear sounds well beyond the human range, and use inner-ear structures to help keep their balance. Their ears are also deeper than they look, which is why dark debris or scratching should not prompt owners to probe the canal. Here are 10 useful facts about feline ears, plus practical guidance on care and symptoms that merit a veterinary exam.
How a cat’s ear works
1. The ear has three functional regions
The visible flap, or pinna, and the ear canal make up the outer ear. Sound travels through the canal to the eardrum; tiny bones in the middle ear transmit its vibrations. In the inner ear, the cochlea is involved in hearing, while other structures contribute to balance. The MSD Veterinary Manual’s overview of feline ear structure describes this route from outer ear to inner ear.

2. Cats can move their ears independently
A cat can move its left and right pinnae independently. This helps the ears collect and direct sound, but it does not mean a cat can turn each ear to any exact angle or locate every sound perfectly. The MSD Veterinary Manual describes the ear’s sound-collecting role.

3. Cats hear a broader range of frequencies than people
In its comparison, Cornell University’s Feline Health Center says cats typically can sense sounds pulsating at 60,000 vibrations per second or greater, while the human upper range is about 20,000 vibrations per second. These are the source’s qualified figures, not a guarantee that every cat hears every sound at those limits. Cornell’s feline ear disorders guide provides the comparison; the publication year is not shown.

4. The inner ear contributes to balance
Balance is linked to the vestibular system in the inner ear, including fluid-filled semicircular canals. The visible ear flap gathers sound; it is not the structure that keeps a cat balanced. The MSD Veterinary Manual explains the ear’s anatomy and functions.
5. The ear canal extends deeper than you might expect
A cat’s canal can trap dirt and wax, according to the MSD Veterinary Manual. Its depth is a reason not to investigate with a cotton swab or other object: probing can injure the ear and does not establish what is causing debris. The manual’s guidance on external ear infections also advises against assuming healthy cats need routine cleaning.

What symptoms and common concerns mean
6. Dark debris does not prove ear mites
Mites can cause dark debris, itching, and head shaking, but these signs are not specific to mites. Other ear conditions can look similar, so dark material alone cannot confirm the cause. Cornell’s ear mite guide describes common signs and the need for veterinary diagnosis.

7. Identifying the cause may require an exam and a sample
A veterinarian can inspect the canal with an otoscope, which also helps assess the eardrum, and examine discharge under a microscope. Microscopy can help distinguish mites from yeast or bacteria. If the cat is painful or the ear is difficult to examine, sedation or anesthesia may be needed. The right treatment depends on the cause, so avoid using a remedy or cleaner in a symptomatic ear without veterinary advice. The MSD Veterinary Manual’s ear overview discusses examination and diagnosis.

8. Ear disease can sometimes extend beyond the outer ear
Outer-ear inflammation can progress inward; in severe cases, disease may compromise hearing and balance. This is a possible complication, not the expected outcome of every ear problem. Cornell notes that many feline ear disorders are treatable: James Flanders, DVM, associate professor of surgery at Cornell’s College of Veterinary Medicine, says, “Most feline ear disorders are readily treatable and will not result in permanent hearing loss.” Cornell’s guide to feline ear disorders discusses both progression and treatment.

9. Healthy cats generally do not need scheduled ear cleaning
The MSD Veterinary Manual says healthy cats generally do not need routine ear cleaning unless a veterinarian recommends it. If your veterinarian advises cleaning, ASPCA guidance is to wipe visible debris from the underside of the flap with veterinarian-recommended cleaner on cotton or gauze. Do not push cotton swabs into the canal. Ask your veterinarian before cleaning or applying a product if the ear is painful, inflamed, or producing concerning discharge. MSD Veterinary Manual and ASPCA grooming guidance provide these limits.

10. A deafness estimate applies to a specific group of cats
Cornell reports that about 80 percent of white cats with two blue eyes will start to show signs of deafness at about four days old as a result of cochlear degeneration. Cornell attributes this estimate to James Flanders, DVM. It is specific to that group and should not be generalized to all white cats or all blue-eyed cats. Cornell’s deafness guide gives the estimate; its publication year is not shown.

Arrange veterinary advice if your cat has persistent scratching or pawing at an ear, repeated head shaking or tilting, sensitivity or pain, redness or swelling, odor, discharge, dark debris, or a change in hearing or balance. These signs have different possible causes and are not a diagnosis. Cornell advises contacting a veterinarian rather than probing the ear when scratching persists. Cornell’s ear disorders guide lists warning signs; its ear mite guide describes potential complications.
