Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Common poultry problems include breathing or digestive signs, parasites, lameness, changes in appetite or weight, abnormal eggs, and preventable housing or biosecurity problems. Because the same signs can have different causes, observe the bird and flock, improve access to clean water and suitable feed, and seek veterinary advice rather than diagnosing by appearance or guessing at medication.
Sudden deaths, severe breathing difficulty, neurologic or balance signs, or abrupt flock-wide changes need prompt attention. Contact a veterinarian or animal-health authority, and do not move birds, eggs, manure, or equipment from a flock when a serious contagious disease is possible.
Quick triage: what to do first
Use these steps to gather useful information and reduce risk while deciding whether to seek help:
- Observe the pattern. Note which birds are affected, their age and species, what signs you see, and how quickly the situation is changing.
- Check basic care. Make sure birds can reach clean water and suitable feed, and inspect housing, ventilation, litter, feeders, and waterers.
- Record recent changes. Note new birds, visitors, wildlife contact, feed or housing changes, egg production, and any illness or deaths.
- Limit spread. Use clean footwear and equipment, wash hands, and avoid unnecessary movement of birds or equipment if contagious disease is possible.
- Seek help when needed. Contact a poultry veterinarian or diagnostic laboratory for severe, persistent, worsening, or flock-wide signs. For possible reportable disease, contact your veterinarian and state or federal animal-health authority.
| Sign or affected system | What to observe | Practical first response |
|---|---|---|
| Breathing | Coughing, sneezing, noisy or labored breathing, gasping, discharge, or facial swelling | Observe whether one or several birds are affected; improve routine biosecurity and seek veterinary advice for severe, persistent, or flock-wide illness. |
| Digestion and general condition | Watery or abnormal droppings, reduced appetite, dehydration, weight loss, or lethargy | Ensure access to clean water and suitable feed; record changes and seek advice if signs are significant or persistent. |
| Skin and feathers | Irritation, damaged feathers, or visible parasites | Inspect birds and housing; use only poultry-labeled treatments as directed if treatment is needed. |
| Feet and movement | Limping, swollen foot pads or joints, or difficulty standing | Inspect the bird and seek veterinary evaluation for painful, worsening, or persistent problems. |
| Egg production | A sudden drop in production or soft-shelled or misshapen eggs | Track production and feed and water access; investigate abrupt changes rather than assuming one cause. |
| Sudden or severe illness | Unexplained deaths, rapidly increasing mortality, severe respiratory signs, or neurologic or balance changes | Do not move birds or equipment; contact a veterinarian and animal-health authority promptly. |
This table helps organize observations; it is not a diagnosis. Compare which birds are affected, how quickly signs change, and any recent changes in housing, feed, visitors, wildlife exposure, or new birds.

1. Respiratory signs
Coughing, sneezing, noisy or labored breathing, gasping, nasal or eye discharge, facial swelling, and reduced activity can occur with several viral, bacterial, fungal, or mycoplasmal diseases. The signs overlap, so they do not identify a specific disease by themselves.
Keep up biosecurity and seek veterinary advice for persistent, severe, or flock-wide illness. Do not use antibiotics as a universal response: they do not work against viruses, and treatment should be selected with professional guidance.
2. Possible serious contagious disease
Sudden deaths, increasing deaths, gasping, nasal discharge, facial or comb swelling, purple discoloration, stumbling, a twisted head or neck, green watery diarrhea, or abrupt egg-production changes can be warning signs of a serious contagious disease. These signs do not establish a diagnosis, but they warrant quick action.
If you suspect a reportable disease, contact a veterinarian, USDA, or your state animal-health official promptly and follow their instructions. Do not move birds, eggs, manure, or equipment from the flock while awaiting guidance.
Everyday biosecurity
- Limit unnecessary visitors and use clean footwear and equipment around birds.
- Wash hands after handling birds or poultry equipment.
- Keep feeders and waterers clean, and protect feed and water from wildlife and contamination.
- Monitor the flock and record illness, deaths, and changes in production or behavior.
3. Coccidiosis and other digestive illness
Bloody or watery diarrhea, abnormal droppings, lethargy, weight loss, and ruffled feathers can be associated with coccidiosis, especially in young birds, but these signs are not specific to it. Other illnesses and management problems may look similar.

Keep housing clean and seek veterinary or diagnostic advice before choosing medication or a prevention plan. Management and vaccination can affect whether routine anticoccidial medication is needed, so do not assume one approach suits every flock.
4. Intestinal worms
Heavy worm burdens may accompany poor condition, reduced growth or egg production, and other nonspecific signs. Signs alone do not establish that worms are the cause.
When possible, arrange diagnostic testing before treatment. Approved poultry medications are limited; consult a veterinarian about current approved products and labels. Follow directions, including any egg or meat withdrawal instructions, and avoid blanket routine deworming without a reason.

5. Mites and lice
Mites can irritate birds and, in heavy infestations, contribute to anemia or declining production. Lice can be associated with skin irritation, damaged feathers, poor condition, and reduced production. Inspect both birds and housing: some mites live on birds, while others hide in cracks and roosts.
If treatment is needed, use only products labeled for poultry and follow the label, including protective-equipment directions and egg or meat withdrawal instructions. A dust-bathing area can support normal husbandry, but it is not a guaranteed cure for an infestation. Avoid improvised chemicals or products not labeled for poultry.

6. Lameness and bumblefoot
Limping, swollen foot pads or joints, or difficulty standing can have infectious, nutritional, or other causes. Bumblefoot is a staphylococcal infection, but not every sore or swollen foot is bumblefoot.
Inspect the bird and seek veterinary evaluation for painful, worsening, or persistent problems. Do not assume one home procedure is appropriate for every case.
7. Changes in appetite, droppings, or weight
Reduced feed or water consumption, watery or greenish droppings, dehydration, weight loss, and lethargy can accompany many illnesses and management problems. A single sign does not identify its cause.
Check that every bird can reach clean water and suitable feed, observe the rest of the flock, and note how signs change. Seek veterinary advice when signs are significant, persistent, or worsening.
8. Reduced egg production or abnormal eggs
A sudden drop in egg production and soft-shelled or misshapen eggs can be associated with illness, nutrition, or management issues. Track each bird’s usual production and feed and water consumption, and investigate sudden changes rather than treating a shell abnormality as a diagnosis.

Dirty equipment or housing, inadequate ventilation or space, and problems with feed or water access can contribute to health risks. Check the environment as well as the birds, and correct basic care problems promptly.
- Keep feeders and waterers clean and provide access to clean water and suitable feed.
- Maintain housing, ventilation, and clean bedding.
- Limit unnecessary visitors and use clean hands, footwear, and equipment around birds.
- For chicks, monitor brooding temperature at bird level and observe their behavior.
10. Parasite treatment and medication mistakes
Using medication without identifying the problem can delay appropriate care and create food-safety risks. Parasite treatments and other medicines should be selected for the specific problem, approved for poultry, and used according to current label directions.
Ask a veterinarian about diagnosis, appropriate products, and any egg or meat withdrawal instructions. Do not use leftover medication, improvised chemicals, or a treatment intended for another species without veterinary direction.
When to seek urgent help
Contact a poultry veterinarian, diagnostic laboratory, or animal-health authority promptly for sudden or increasing deaths, severe breathing difficulty, neurologic or balance signs, purple discoloration, abrupt flock-wide changes, or illness affecting several birds. Do not move birds, eggs, manure, or equipment if a serious contagious disease is possible; follow official instructions.

For other problems, seek veterinary advice when signs are severe, persistent, worsening, or not explained by a simple husbandry issue. Notes on affected birds, timing, recent changes, and flock production can help a professional assess the situation.
FAQ
Can I identify a poultry disease from symptoms alone?
Usually not. Similar signs can occur with different diseases and management problems. Observe the bird and flock, record changes, and seek veterinary examination or diagnostic testing when signs are serious, persistent, or affect multiple birds.
Should I deworm chickens routinely?
Do not treat as a blanket measure. Signs do not establish a worm burden, and approved poultry medications are limited. Ask a veterinarian about testing and current approved products and labels.
What should I do if several birds become sick or die?
Contact a veterinarian and, if a serious contagious disease is possible, your state or federal animal-health authority promptly. Avoid moving birds, eggs, manure, or equipment while awaiting instructions.
What should I do about mites or lice?
Inspect both the birds and housing. If treatment is needed, use a product labeled for poultry and follow its directions, including protective-equipment and egg or meat withdrawal instructions.
When should I get help for a limping bird?
Seek veterinary evaluation if limping or a swollen foot or joint is painful, worsening, or persistent. These signs can have different causes, and there is no single home procedure for every case.
The bottom line
Common poultry problems involve breathing, digestion, parasites, movement, appetite, weight, egg production, and husbandry. Good observation, clean water and equipment, suitable feed, maintained housing, and daily biosecurity support flock health, but they do not replace diagnosis. Seek professional or official help promptly for severe, persistent, or flock-wide illness.
