Keep winter outings short enough for your pet, watch for signs of cold stress, and clean paws after every walk. Cold tolerance depends on the individual animal—not a single temperature cutoff—so tailor precautions to your pet’s age, size, health, coat, body condition, and experience with cold. These ten tips cover dogs and cats, from icy sidewalks to antifreeze and storm preparation.
1. Match cold-weather exposure to your pet
There is no temperature cutoff that is safe for every dog. Small, young, older, thin-coated, underweight, ill, or unacclimated dogs may need extra protection and shorter time outside. Wind, wet fur, and the conditions underfoot also affect comfort. Cornell’s Riney Canine Health Center advises owners to watch the dog and shorten or end an outing when the animal shows signs of cold stress.
Keep pets indoors during unsafe cold, and never leave a dog unattended in a cold car. A coat or sweater may help a cold-sensitive dog, but clothing does not make prolonged exposure safe.
2. Learn the signs that your dog is too cold
Bring your dog into a warm, dry place if you notice shivering, whining or barking, a tucked tail, a hunched posture, paw-lifting, reluctance to walk, or sudden anxiety. Do not wait for a particular thermometer reading if your dog is uncomfortable. Cornell says suspected frostbite or hypothermia requires immediate veterinary attention.

3. Protect paws before and after walks
Before a walk, consider a veterinarian-approved paw protectant or well-fitting dog winter booties. Booties provide a physical barrier and may help dogs with mobility concerns on slippery surfaces; balm or wax is a topical option. Neither removes the need to clean paws afterward, and boots should fit properly and be tolerated by your dog. The cited veterinary guidance does not establish that one option or brand works best for every dog.
After each walk, wipe or wash your dog’s paws, legs, and belly, then dry them. Check pads and between toes for cracks, redness, salt, de-icer, or packed snow. Contact your veterinarian if you find an injury or are unsure whether a product or exposure is harmful.
4. Keep antifreeze and ice melt out of reach
Ethylene-glycol antifreeze can be deadly to pets. Clean spills promptly, store antifreeze and ice-melt products securely, and do not let pets lick treated surfaces or contaminated paws. If you think your pet may have swallowed antifreeze or another de-icer, seek veterinary care immediately rather than waiting for symptoms.

5. Keep cats inside when possible—and check the car
Indoor living is the safer winter option for cats. Cats outdoors may seek warmth near a vehicle, including under the hood or in a wheel well. Before starting a car, check around the wheels and under the hood. Keep antifreeze spills cleaned up and chemicals secured, since cats can be exposed to them too.

Dry your pet thoroughly after bathing or getting wet outdoors, and provide a warm place to rest. Dry indoor air can irritate skin, so pay attention to changes in your pet’s skin and coat. Avoid shaving a dog down to the skin in winter, and consider bathing less often during cold spells unless your veterinarian advises otherwise.
7. Give your pet a warm, dry resting place
Provide indoor pets with a warm bed away from drafts and cold floors. A small, older, ill, or thin-coated dog may benefit from a suitable coat or sweater when conditions call for it, but monitor comfort and fit. If a cat cannot be kept indoors, Cornell’s feline guidance recommends providing appropriate shelter; outdoor shelter should be dry and protected from the elements.

8. Keep fresh water available and feed for actual needs
Make fresh water available every day. Do not automatically increase food because it is winter: a pet that exercises less may need fewer calories, while an animal spending significant time outdoors may need more energy. Base portions on your pet’s activity and condition, and ask your veterinarian if you are unsure.
9. Use a leash and visible identification in snow or darkness
Keep dogs leashed on snow and ice, where familiar paths and boundaries may be harder to recognize. Avoid frozen ponds and lakes; ice can be unsafe even when it looks solid. Use reflective walking gear for dark winter outings, and make sure your pet’s identification is current in case they get lost.

10. Prepare for winter storms before they arrive
Severe weather can disrupt access to supplies or veterinary care. Before a storm, make sure you have enough pet food, water, and any necessary medication, along with a safe indoor place for your pet. Cornell advises planning ahead so your animal’s needs are covered if conditions make travel difficult.
