This guide compares six breeds with care routines supported by the sources reviewed, showing what owners should plan for rather than claiming these are the definitive most demanding breeds.
Individual needs vary with age, health, coat length, household, and lifestyle. Match a dog to the time and care you can provide throughout its life, and ask a veterinarian or qualified professional about individual health and behavior questions.
What makes a dog high-maintenance?
Maintenance has several dimensions. A breed can need intensive grooming without unusually strenuous exercise, while another may be relatively straightforward to brush but require substantial activity, training, and safe containment.
- Grooming: Coat type and length affect brushing, bathing, and whether recurring professional grooming is useful.
- Exercise and mental activity: Some dogs need vigorous daily activity or a regular job, not just occasional walks.
- Training and socialization: Owners should plan for consistent training and early, positive exposure to people and situations.
- Companionship and containment: Some dogs need social contact and secure management to prevent unsafe roaming or chasing.
- Health planning: Breed-related concerns may be worth discussing with a veterinarian. A predisposition is not a prediction about an individual dog.
The American Veterinary Medical Association frames dog ownership as a lifelong responsibility that includes companionship, exercise, physical and mental health, and veterinary care. Consider the full routine, not just one appealing trait.

Quick comparison: six researched examples
This is a practical comparison, not a ranked list. Grooming and activity needs depend on the individual dog and its coat, health, and circumstances.
| Breed | Grooming considerations | Activity and training considerations | Other care considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Afghan Hound | Several hours of brushing each week for the adult coat; regular bathing. | Needs safe opportunities for exercise; do not assume off-leash reliability. | Use a high, secure fence; discuss sighthound anesthesia sensitivity and bloat risk with a veterinarian. |
| Border Collie | Brush once or twice weekly; daily during shedding season. | Needs vigorous daily exercise if not working; benefits from a job, training, and early socialization. | Particularly suited to an active owner prepared to provide regular engagement. |
| Standard Poodle | A full coat needs daily brushing to the skin; a short trim may be maintained at home or by a groomer every four to six weeks. | Active and needs daily exercise. | Choose a routine that fits the chosen coat length and your grooming capacity. |
| Siberian Husky | Weekly brushing; manage undercoat during twice-yearly shedding. | Active and needs regular exercise, training, and social contact. | Use a leash, harness, or fenced yard for containment; do not leave alone all day. |
| Shih Tzu | Long coats need daily brushing and a bath about every three or four weeks, plus routine nail and ear care. | Short daily walks and indoor play can meet exercise needs. | Attend to eye-area cleaning and topknot hair; short face and heavy coat make heat a concern. |
| Komondor | Substantial, ongoing coat care is needed. | Early socialization and training matter; PDSA says about an hour of exercise daily is usually sufficient. | Plan for guardian-dog behavior and handling needs. |
1. Afghan Hound: coat care and secure exercise
The Afghan Hound’s adult coat needs several hours of brushing per week to help prevent tangles and mats, as well as regular bathing, according to the American Kennel Club (AKC) breed-care profile.
Exercise also requires planning. Afghan Hounds are strong jumpers and may chase prey, so use a high, secure fenced area and do not treat ordinary off-leash walks as safe. The AKC notes sighthound sensitivity to anesthesia and the risk of bloat in deep-chested dogs. Discuss those concerns and appropriate screening with a veterinarian; they are not a diagnosis or prediction for every dog.
2. Border Collie: daily activity, a job, and coat care
A Border Collie that does not work needs vigorous daily exercise, and the breed benefits from having a job, says the AKC Border Collie care profile. Early socialization and training are also important. Before choosing one, consider whether you can make purposeful activity and ongoing engagement part of an ordinary week.

The double coat generally needs brushing once or twice weekly, with daily brushing during shedding season, according to the AKC. Ask about the individual dog’s activity and grooming needs rather than assuming every Border Collie has the same workload.
3. Standard Poodle: a low-shedding coat still needs care
A full Poodle coat needs daily brushing all the way to the skin to avoid mats. The AKC Standard Poodle profile says owners can maintain a short trim themselves or use a professional groomer every four to six weeks. The appropriate routine depends on coat length and trim.
Poodles are active and need daily exercise. Include grooming time as well as activity when deciding whether the breed fits your household. A low-shedding coat does not mean a self-maintaining coat.
4. Siberian Husky: exercise, shedding, and containment
Siberian Huskies are active, athletic dogs that need regular exercise. Because they were bred to run, the AKC care profile advises leash, harness, or fenced-yard containment. Plan for training and social contact, and do not leave a Husky alone all day.

Weekly brushing helps maintain the coat, with extra attention to removing undercoat during the twice-yearly shedding periods. The required amount of exercise and coat care varies among individual dogs, so use breed guidance as a starting point rather than a fixed prescription.
5. Shih Tzu: substantial coat care, modest exercise
A long-coated Shih Tzu needs daily brushing and a bath about every three or four weeks, as well as routine nail and ear care. The AKC Shih Tzu profile also describes eye-area cleaning and managing topknot hair as part of grooming.
Despite the coat workload, short daily walks and indoor play can meet this breed’s exercise needs, according to the AKC. Heavy coats and short faces make heat a concern, so ask your veterinarian about safe care in hot weather.
6. Komondor: coat upkeep and early training
The Komondor combines substantial coat care with the needs of a guardian breed. The PDSA care guide describes significant coat-care needs and emphasizes early socialization and training. It says about an hour of exercise daily is usually sufficient.

Before choosing a Komondor, ask an experienced breeder or rescue about the individual dog’s care routine, handling, and behavior. Plan for ongoing coat upkeep and consistent training rather than assuming the coat is maintenance-free or that exercise alone addresses the breed’s needs.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to plan for grooming and daily care
Grooming frequency depends on breed, coat, and lifestyle. The AKC home-grooming guide discusses at-home care; choose tools suited to the individual coat rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all brush.
- Ask a breeder, rescue, groomer, or veterinarian what routine fits the individual dog’s coat and condition.
- Write down the recurring tasks, such as brushing, bathing, nail care, ear care, exercise, and training.
- Decide whether you can do the grooming at home or need recurring appointments with a professional groomer.
- Make a plan for exercise, companionship, and training on ordinary workdays, not just weekends.
- Discuss breed-related health concerns and appropriate preventive care with a veterinarian.
No current, comparable breed-by-breed care-cost figure was established in the research for this guide. The AKC’s cited $2,489 average annual dog-care spending comes from a voluntary 2004 survey of 1,001 respondents; it is historical general dog-ownership context, not a current or breed-specific estimate. The AKC cautions that its self-selected recruitment may not represent all dog owners. Do not use it as a present-day budget forecast.

Does a low-shedding dog need less grooming?
Not necessarily. The AKC says a full Poodle coat needs daily brushing to the skin to avoid mats; shorter trims can change the routine. Ask about the coat length and care needs of the dog you are considering.
How much exercise does a Border Collie need?
The AKC says a Border Collie that does not work needs vigorous daily exercise and benefits from having a job. The right routine depends on the individual dog, so consult a veterinarian or qualified trainer about an appropriate plan.
Can a Siberian Husky be safely walked off leash?
The AKC advises leash, harness, or fenced-yard containment because Huskies were bred to run. Do not rely on off-leash access as your containment plan.
Is a Shih Tzu easy to care for because it needs less exercise?
Its exercise needs may be modest, but its long coat can require daily brushing, bathing about every three or four weeks, and routine nail and ear care. Heat also deserves attention.
What should I ask before choosing a high-maintenance breed?
Ask what the individual dog needs for grooming, exercise, training, companionship, containment, and preventive veterinary care. Confirm that the routine fits your actual schedule and seek professional advice for health questions.
The Bottom Line
High maintenance can mean a demanding coat, vigorous activity, secure containment, or several kinds of care at once. Use breed guidance to understand the likely workload, then verify the routine for the individual dog with a responsible source. The best match is one whose everyday needs your household can reliably meet.
