Abalone are marine snails that cling to rocky surfaces, graze on algae, and release eggs and sperm into the water to reproduce. Their slow growth and need for nearby spawning adults can make depleted populations slow to recover. The facts below distinguish species and locations rather than treating all abalone as alike.
1. Abalone are snails, not oysters
Abalone are marine gastropod mollusks, related to snails and limpets. Oysters, clams, mussels, and scallops are bivalves, a different group of mollusks.
Abalone have a single, low-profile shell and a broad muscular foot that helps them cling to rocky surfaces. “Abalone” is a common name for multiple species, so size, habitat, lifespan, and conservation status depend on which species and location you mean.
2. Shell pores have practical functions
The holes along an abalone shell are functional openings, not decoration. They are associated with respiration and other exchanges with the surrounding water. In black abalone, the shell typically has five to nine open respiratory pores, according to NOAA Fisheries.

Pore counts and arrangements are not reliable on their own for identifying every abalone species. Shell features vary, and identification should take geography and the whole shell into account.
3. Abalone graze on kelp and other algae
Abalone eat algae, scraping food from hard surfaces with a radula—a flexible feeding organ lined with tiny teeth. Their diet varies with species and habitat.
Food availability can affect their condition. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) describes kelp scarcity associated with increased purple sea urchin populations as a source of food stress for northern California abalone.
4. They broadcast spawn, and distance matters
Abalone reproduce by releasing eggs and sperm into the water, where fertilization happens. NOAA Fisheries describes this as broadcast spawning.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesSuccessful fertilization depends in part on adults being close enough together. CDFW says red abalone need to be within about a meter for effective fertilization. That species-specific example helps explain why a population can struggle to reproduce after its numbers fall and its adults become widely spaced.
5. Their larvae drift before settling
After fertilization, abalone larvae spend time in the water before settling onto suitable habitat. Currents, food, and the availability of places to settle all affect whether young abalone survive. The length of this stage varies by species and conditions, so a single duration should not be applied to all abalone.
6. Red abalone grow slowly
Northern California red abalone take about 12 years to reach 7 inches, according to CDFW; growth rates vary. CDFW reports it can take about five more years to grow from 7 to 8 inches.
Slow growth means that removing large adults can have lasting effects. Larger red abalone females can produce more eggs than smaller ones, but those figures are approximate examples for red abalone, not a universal statistic for the group.

7. Food shortages can leave abalone under stress
Abalone depend on algae, including kelp, so changes in food availability can affect their health. CDFW links kelp scarcity associated with increased purple sea urchin populations to food stress among northern California abalone.
Food stress is one pressure among several. Conditions vary by coast and species, so it should not be assumed that every abalone population faces the same food shortage.
8. Sparse populations can be hard to rebuild
Abalone’s reproductive strategy creates a vulnerability: when adults are too far apart, eggs and sperm are less likely to meet. Combined with slow growth and uneven reproductive success, this can make populations susceptible to overfishing and slow to recover.
CDFW notes that a fishery may take decades to recover after a collapse. Protecting surviving adults and habitat matters, but recovery also depends on the conditions needed for reproduction and young abalone to survive.

9. Black abalone have a distinct fishery and recovery history
Black abalone are associated with rocky intertidal and shallow subtidal habitat. NOAA Fisheries reports that commercial landings peaked at nearly 2 million pounds in 1973 and that California black abalone fishing closed in 1993. Withering syndrome also contributed to declines.
White abalone have a different history: NOAA Fisheries says they were listed as endangered under the U.S. Endangered Species Act in 2001. Recovery work includes captive breeding and restoration efforts.
| Species | Habitat context | Conservation and recovery context |
|---|---|---|
| Black abalone | Rocky intertidal and shallow subtidal areas | California fishing closed in 1993; withering syndrome contributed to declines |
| White abalone | Deeper rocky areas | Listed as endangered in the United States in 2001; captive breeding and restoration work are underway |
These examples do not describe every abalone species. Conservation status and rules vary by species and jurisdiction.

Abalone harvest rules are not universal. NOAA Fisheries says it is illegal to fish for, catch, or keep any abalone species in California except recreational take of red abalone north of San Francisco during designated periods.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do abalone reproduce?
Abalone broadcast spawn: they release eggs and sperm into the water, where fertilization occurs. Adults need to be close enough for their gametes to meet; CDFW gives about a meter as an effective distance for red abalone.
How fast do abalone grow?
Growth varies by species and conditions. CDFW reports that northern California red abalone take about 12 years to reach 7 inches and about five more years to grow from 7 to 8 inches.
Why are abalone and empty shells washing ashore?
The cause can vary by location and species. Food stress, disease, environmental conditions, and other pressures may affect abalone, but a specific beach event should not be attributed to one cause without local evidence. Follow local wildlife guidance and do not move live animals.

Are all abalone endangered?
No. Conservation status differs among species and jurisdictions. White abalone are listed as endangered under the U.S. Endangered Species Act, but that status does not automatically apply to every abalone species worldwide.
Can I collect an abalone shell?
Rules depend on location, species, and circumstances. In California, NOAA Fisheries describes a limited recreational red abalone exception north of San Francisco during designated periods; check current local regulations before collecting or possessing a shell.
The Bottom Line
Abalone are algae-eating marine snails whose slow growth and broadcast spawning make nearby adults important for reproduction. Black and white abalone illustrate how species can have different habitats and conservation histories. Check species-specific information and current local rules rather than assuming one fact or regulation applies to every abalone.
