Among living animals, racehorses command the highest documented public-auction prices. The ranking below separates fossil specimens from living animals and distinguishes completed sales from an estimated value based on a partial ownership stake.
“Most expensive” here means the highest documented public sale or auction price in the cited record sources. The list is ordered by the reported U.S.-dollar amount, using approximate conversions where the original sale was in another currency. These are historical transaction records, not inflation-adjusted figures or current market prices. The cloned polo horse is included as a lower-confidence report from a secondary list, rather than as an official Guinness World Records category record.
Dinosaur fossils: the two highest recorded prices
These are fossil specimens, not living animals. They lead the overall list because of the prices paid for their skeletons at auction.
| Rank | Animal or specimen | Reported price and original currency | Sale date and basis |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Gus, T. rex skeleton | $50.1 million | 14 July 2026; Sotheby’s, New York; includes buyer’s premium. Guinness World Records identifies it as the most expensive dinosaur bones sold at auction. |
| 2 | Apex, Stegosaurus skeleton | $44.6 million | 17 July 2024; Sotheby’s, New York; includes buyer’s premium. This was the previous dinosaur auction record before Gus. |
Living animals: eight high-value sales and reports
| Rank | Animal | Reported price and original currency | Sale date and basis |

| 3 | Unnamed Forestry thoroughbred colt | $16 million | 28 February 2006; public auction at Calder Race Course, Florida. Guinness World Records identifies it as the highest price paid for a racehorse at public auction. |
| 4 | Seattle Dancer, thoroughbred yearling | $13.1 million | 23 July 1985; Keeneland, Kentucky. Guinness World Records records the Northern Dancer yearling in its most-expensive-animal/yearling category. |
| 5 | Viatina-19 FIV Mara Movéis, cow | About $4 million implied value; a 33% stake sold for 7 million Brazilian reais, about $1.3 million | Stake sale date not stated in the cited Associated Press account. The full-animal figure is an implied valuation, not a whole-animal sale price. Guinness World Records recognized her as the most expensive cow sold at auction. |
| 6 | New Kim, racing pigeon | About €1.6 million (about $1.8 million) | 15 November 2020; sold through PIPA’s auction, according to Guinness World Records. |
| 7 | Cloned polo horse | $800,000 reported sale | Sale date and transaction details are not stated in the secondary list reporting the figure. This is not presented as an official Guinness category record. |
| 8 | Big Splash, red Tibetan mastiff | 10 million Chinese yuan (£945,000; $1,513,417) | March 2011; Guinness World Records lists the 11-month-old dog as the costliest dog in its record entry. |
| 9 | Sportsmans Double Diamond, Texel ram lamb | £367,500 ($490,473); winning bid of 350,000 guineas | 27 August 2020; auction in Lanark, Scotland, as recorded by Guinness World Records. |
| 10 | Angora buck | NZ$140,000 (about $82,600) | 25 January 1985; Waitangi Angoras sale, New Zealand, according to Guinness World Records. |
What is the most expensive animal ever sold?
If “animal” includes fossil specimens sold at auction, Gus is the record-holder in this list. Guinness World Records says the T. rex skeleton surpassed Apex’s previous dinosaur auction record. These prices describe skeletons as auctioned specimens; they should not be read as prices for living animals.

Which horse is the most expensive?
The answer depends on the record category. The unnamed Forestry colt holds the cited record for the highest price paid for a racehorse at public auction. Seattle Dancer was a yearling and is separately recorded by Guinness World Records in its most-expensive-animal/yearling category. Both records reflect exceptional thoroughbred breeding value; a historic auction result does not establish what either horse would be worth today.
How much did the most expensive dog cost?
Guinness World Records’ cited dog entry names Big Splash, an 11-month-old red Tibetan mastiff. Its listed sale price appears in several currencies in the table. The figure is a historical record, not a guide to typical Tibetan mastiff prices or to what a dog of any breed costs now.

Viatina-19 FIV Mara Movéis is the cow recognized by Guinness World Records in its auction record. The widely reported full-animal valuation needs careful interpretation: the Associated Press reported a sale of a 33% stake, from which a value for the whole cow can be inferred. It was not a simple cash sale of the entire animal for that implied amount. Her value reflects elite cattle breeding and genetics as well as the ownership stake.

Why these record prices are not directly comparable
- Different things were sold. The top two entries are fossil skeletons; the rest are living animals.
- Different kinds of transaction are represented. Most entries are reported auction sales, while the cow’s whole-animal amount is an inference from a stake sale. The cloned polo horse is a secondary-source report with limited transaction detail.
- Currency and date matter. The figures retain their reported currencies and dates; approximate conversions do not adjust for inflation or exchange-rate changes since the sale.
- Record labels are not identical. Some figures are tied to specific Guinness World Records categories, while the cloned-horse amount is not an official category record in the cited material.
