Your cat may be accepting the new kitten when it can stay relaxed nearby, show calm curiosity, keep its normal routines, and share space without persistent tension. Look for a pattern across repeated encounters—not one friendly gesture or the absence of a fight. Acceptance can mean peaceful coexistence; the cats do not have to become close friends.
10 signs your cat is accepting the new kitten
These are useful signs of progress, not a diagnostic checklist. Watch the resident cat’s whole body, choices, and ordinary behavior over time, and observe the kitten too. A single cue can be misleading: what matters is whether calm behavior is becoming more consistent across encounters.

Your cat’s body looks loose and relaxed
During exposure, a relaxed posture, smooth rather than raised fur, and ears held upright and forward are encouraging. Read these cues together; one tail or ear movement by itself does not prove comfort.

Your cat investigates the kitten or its scent calmly
Sniffing bedding or approaching the kitten without a tense posture can show growing familiarity. Let the cat investigate at its own pace rather than bringing the kitten closer.

Your cat can stay nearby without fixating or guarding the way
Being in the same area is more reassuring when the resident cat is not persistently staring, blocking the kitten’s route, or repeatedly retreating. No overt fight does not necessarily mean the cat feels comfortable.

Your cat can leave when it wants to
A cat that can choose distance and return to a safe place has more control over the encounter. Do not hold either cat in place or force them to approach one another.

Your cat continues eating and drinking normally
Keep track of both cats’ appetite and water intake during the introduction. A drop in appetite can accompany tension; if a change persists, contact a veterinarian rather than assuming it is only a reaction to the kitten.

Your cat’s litter-box habits stay familiar
Notice whether your cat continues using the litter box as usual and whether its elimination changes. A change can be a sign of stress, but it can also have a medical cause, so discuss persistent changes with a veterinarian.

Your cat can rest and sleep as usual
Reasonably undisturbed rest is more encouraging than a cat that is persistently hiding, inactive, or unable to settle. A quiet cat is not automatically a comfortable cat.

Your cat can play while the kitten is visible behind a barrier
If your resident cat can engage with a toy while the kitten is on the other side of a secure barrier, that is a practical sign it can tolerate the kitten’s presence at that stage. Keep the play session low-pressure and end it if either cat becomes tense.

Supervised face-to-face meetings stay calm
Short, calm meetings that can be repeated are a stronger sign of progress than one unusually successful encounter. Extend them gradually only while both cats remain settled; several calm supervised interactions should come before any unsupervised time together.

The cats can share the home peacefully, even without affection
They may eventually groom or sleep beside one another, but those behaviors are not required milestones. Calmly sharing a home is a valid outcome even if each cat prefers its own space.

What signs mean the introduction may be moving too fast?
Hissing once does not by itself establish that the introduction has failed, but repeated or escalating signs mean it is time to slow down. Watch for tense posture, raised fur, flattened ears, dilated pupils, a rapidly swishing tail, growling, swatting, chasing, or physical conflict. Subtler signs include persistent staring, blocking, walking away, hiding, reduced appetite, inactivity, disturbed sleep, and changes in elimination.

Quiet avoidance is not proof of acceptance: a cat may be coping by withdrawing or by changing its normal behavior. Check that both cats can reach food, water, litter boxes, resting places, hiding places, and elevated spaces without having to pass or compete with the other.
- If tension appears, calmly separate the cats without putting your hands between fighting animals.
- Return to the last introduction stage at which both cats were calm, then proceed more gradually.
- Contact a veterinarian if aggression recurs, progress remains poor, or changes in eating, elimination, activity, or other normal behavior persist.
How to judge progress during a gradual introduction
There is no reliable fixed number of days for every pair. UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine says an introduction may take a few days to a few months; the AAFP guidance describes a process that may take several weeks or months, depending on the cats. Use their behavior—not the calendar—to decide whether to advance.

Set up separate spaces first
Give the kitten a secure transition room with its own essentials while the resident cat keeps access to familiar areas and resources. Let the kitten settle before moving on.

Build familiarity by scent
Exchange bedding or other familiar scents when both cats are calm. If either becomes distressed, pause and try again later rather than moving to face-to-face contact.

Let each cat explore separately
Allow the cats to investigate the other’s space at different times, while keeping them apart. This helps them encounter new scents without requiring close contact.

Introduce sight and play through a secure barrier
Use a barrier that is secure for both cats for brief visual sessions. A tall, secure gate or cat barrier may help; choose one that prevents jumping over it, and do not assume every gate will contain every kitten. A wand toy can provide a low-pressure play activity near the barrier.

Try short supervised meetings
Proceed only when both cats can remain calm through barrier sessions. Keep initial meetings brief, make sure each cat can retreat, and increase duration gradually only after calm encounters.

The AAFP and International Society of Feline Medicine’s Feline Environmental Needs Guidelines state: “A gradual process of increasing familiarity should occur when a new cat is introduced into a household with existing cats.” Their guidance also emphasizes safe places and environmental choice. Provide separate, well-spaced access to food, water, litter, resting and hiding places, and elevated spots where possible, so neither cat has to compete for essential resources.
Why calm coexistence is a meaningful result
Affiliation and tolerance are not the same thing. Some cats form close social bonds; others are most comfortable keeping their distance while sharing a household. The AAFP’s 2024 intercat tension guideline reports that a survey of 2,492 multi-cat households found signs of tension in 87.7% of households surveyed, and that 73.3% of respondents said tension began with the introduction of a new cat. These are survey findings, not a prediction for any particular home or a measure of how an individual introduction will turn out.
