Start with a few practical steps: refresh play and resting spaces, offer regular interaction, and make a note of any health care that’s due. Choose changes that suit your cat, and ask your veterinarian about decisions involving health, diet, or preventive care.
1. Check your toys, then rotate them
Gather your cat’s toys and inspect them before putting them back into circulation. Retire anything torn or damaged, and avoid toys with small parts or strands that could come loose and be swallowed. Cornell’s Feline Health Center advises considering the play environment, too; if you’re unsure whether a toy is safe, ask your veterinarian. Cornell’s toy-safety guidance explains the risks.
Keep some toys put away and bring them out at different times to renew your cat’s interest. There’s no universal number of toys to leave out. Match the selection to your cat’s play style, and supervise play when a toy’s design or your cat’s habits make that sensible. The International Cat Association also recommends promptly removing damaged toys in its January 2026 New Year guide.
2. Make time for short, regular play
Interactive play gives cats an outlet for natural behaviors and adds movement to the day. Sally E. Bahner’s Cats.com guide, updated January 5, 2026, suggests sessions of 5–10 minutes a couple of times a day. The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) separately suggests aiming for 15–20 minutes of interactive play daily in its indoor-cat guidance, dated September 18, 2024. These are published suggestions, not a universal prescription; use your cat’s age, health, interest, and energy as your guide rather than treating either figure as a required single-session target.

Try a wand toy or another safe toy your cat likes, and let the cat engage at its own pace. A few brief opportunities may fit your household better than one long session. If your cat has mobility or health concerns, ask your veterinarian what kind of activity is appropriate.
3. Enrich the home without buying more
Novelty can come from how you arrange a space, not just from a new product. Cornell notes that paper bags, cardboard boxes, and ping-pong balls can entertain cats. Remove handles or other parts that could pose a hazard, and supervise play with household objects as appropriate.

4. Refresh beds and quiet retreats
Wash your cat’s bedding according to its care instructions, then return it to a familiar, comfortable spot. Cats also benefit from places where they can rest undisturbed. A quiet retreat can be as simple as a covered bed or a tucked-away resting place; it need not be a new purchase. TICA’s New Year guide also recommends comfortable resting areas and quiet retreats.

5. Choose a scratching surface your cat will use
Scratching is a normal feline behavior. The useful resolution is to provide appropriate places for it, not to expect a cat to stop scratching. When comparing options, consider four things:
- Material: Sisal and cardboard are documented options; notice which textures your cat prefers.
- Orientation: Offer a vertical post, a horizontal scratcher, or both, depending on how your cat likes to stretch and scratch.
- Stability: Choose a surface that does not wobble or tip when used.
- Placement: Put it where your cat already spends time or scratches, rather than hiding it in an unused room.
AAHA recommends stable scratching surfaces in locations cats use, along with vertical space. The Cats.com guide likewise emphasizes a stable scratcher in a useful location. There is no one design that suits every cat, so observe what your cat chooses.

6. Make claw care calm and careful
If you trim your cat’s claws, take care not to cut the quick, the sensitive part inside the claw. Go slowly and stop if your cat becomes distressed. If you’re unsure where to cut, your cat resists handling, or you need help establishing a routine, ask your veterinarian or veterinary team to demonstrate a safe approach. Claw trimming is not a substitute for providing suitable scratching surfaces.

If your cat is due for a veterinary visit—or you’re not sure when the last one was—contact your clinic and ask what is appropriate for your cat. Use the visit to discuss examinations, dental care, vaccines, parasite prevention, and any changes you have noticed. The right timing and plan depend on the individual cat, its health and circumstances, and local requirements; there is no single schedule or vaccine rule that applies everywhere.

In PetMD’s article updated December 1, 2025, veterinarian Veronica Villanueva, DVM, medical director of VEG Anaheim Hills, says: “Regular vet checkups help detect potential health issues before they become emergencies.” AAHA’s indoor-cat guidance also recommends a wellness visit and individualized attention to weight and dental care. Treat those as reasons to make a plan with your own veterinarian, not a substitute for that advice.
8. Review food choices with a veterinarian
Use a food-label review as a prompt to check whether your cat’s current diet still fits its needs, not as a reason to switch foods automatically. If you are considering a change, have questions about weight, or are managing a health condition, ask your veterinarian for an individualized recommendation. The Cats.com article suggests reading labels, but its author’s personal food discussion does not establish a general rule about dry food.
9. Consider safe outdoor enrichment only if it suits your cat
Some cats may enjoy controlled outdoor experiences, such as time in a secure catio or learning to use a harness. Neither is right for every cat, and a harness should not be assumed safe or comfortable without gradual, cat-led acclimation. Consider your cat’s temperament and the safety of the setting before trying either option. For health, vaccination, or parasite-prevention questions related to outdoor access, consult your veterinarian; check local rules for any legal vaccine requirements.
10. Plan carefully before adding another cat
A second cat is a household decision, not a resolution every cat needs. Before adopting, consider available space, resources, and whether the resident cat is likely to tolerate a newcomer. If you proceed, plan a gradual introduction rather than putting the cats together immediately. Your veterinarian or a qualified behavior professional can help you assess a difficult match or introduction.
Make the change manageable
Pick one or two actions you can maintain—perhaps a short play break and a toy check—then add another only if it fits your routine. If you want to help cats beyond your own, TICA also suggests volunteering, fostering, or donating to a shelter; choose an option that works for your time and circumstances.
