10 Tips to Help Cats and Babies Get Along Safely at Home

Cats and babies can share a home when parents prepare early, keep the cat out of the sleep space, and supervise every interaction. Ten practical tips.

Most cats and babies can share a home. The arrangement works when parents plan it deliberately: the cat is never forced into contact, the baby’s sleep space is one the cat cannot enter, and an adult is actively watching whenever the two are together. A cat that never becomes a lap companion for the baby can still be living well in the household. A cat that has access to the crib is the outcome to prevent.

The ASPCA puts the balance well: “Although we know that cats and babies can co-exist harmoniously in the same family, there are still precautions that new or expecting parents can take to help safeguard both baby and feline.” (ASPCA, “Cats and Babies”) The ten tips below follow that sequence, from preparation before the birth to the points that matter as the baby grows.

A 2018 survey by Cats Protection found that 96% of people agreed there are benefits to children growing up with cats. That is a finding about what people believe, not evidence that any particular cat and baby will bond or that a household will be free of problems.

Before the baby arrives

1. Start preparing well before the birth

Cats often notice new sounds, smells and household patterns before anyone else in the house. Play recordings of baby sounds at low volume, and raise the volume gradually over days or weeks rather than all at once. Let the cat investigate nursery items such as the crib, changing table and car seat while they are still unused, and only then set rules about which surfaces are off limits. Both Cats Protection’s leaflet on cats and people and the ASPCA’s guidance on cats and babies recommend this early, gradual exposure.

2. Move routines before the birth, not after

If the cat’s litter tray, feeding spot or daily care will pass to another person, shift it gradually. The ASPCA advises moving care routines that will transfer to another caregiver one to two months before the birth, which gives the cat time to adjust before the household is also adjusting to a newborn. Changes made in the last days before the birth, or in the first weeks after it, add a second stressor to an already busy period.

3. Set the nursery boundary before it matters

If the nursery or crib will be off limits, establish that boundary ahead of time, not on the day the baby comes home. Offer the cat a warm, appealing alternative sleeping place, such as a bed or blanket in a room the cat already uses. The aim is for the cat to have a comfortable place of its own, so that the closed door reads as a rule about one room rather than a loss of its favourite spot.

Setting up the cat’s space

4. Keep a quiet retreat the cat can use

Maintain hiding places and a quiet area where the cat can withdraw from noise and activity. Cats Protection suggests considering additional scratching posts and cat trees, because scratching and hiding in high places can help a cat feel secure. A cat tree with a hiding space is a practical option for this, but the retreat matters more than the brand: it should be somewhere the household traffic does not reach, and it should stay available once the baby arrives.

5. Protect the cat’s routines and one-to-one time

Preserve feeding times, play sessions and calm one-to-one time as much as possible. A new baby changes how much attention a parent can give, so plan realistic moments for the cat rather than letting its care disappear abruptly. A short, predictable play session at the same time each day is easier to keep than a longer one that gets cancelled during night feeds. Note who will cover each routine when a parent is unavailable.

The first meeting

6. Make the first homecoming quiet

The ASPCA recommends greeting the cat in a quiet room before bringing in other visitors. Cats Protection likewise suggests a quiet moment and a neutral introduction area away from where the cat eats or sleeps. Keep the first encounter brief, and keep the room calm, with no crowd of relatives around the cat at the same time.

7. Introduce the baby without forcing contact

Allow the cat to sniff or investigate if it chooses to. Let it leave or hide at any point, and do not hold the cat near the baby or push it toward the carrier. When the cat stays relaxed, reward that calm behaviour with quiet praise or a treat. A used baby blanket or item of clothing can be left in a quiet place so the cat can learn the baby’s scent at its own pace. Cats Protection’s guidance is clear on this point: the introduction should be the cat’s choice.

Keeping the baby’s sleep space cat-free

8. Keep the cat out of every infant sleep space

Do not let the cat into the crib, bassinet, pram or any other place where the baby sleeps. Keep the nursery inaccessible while the baby is sleeping. The ASPCA describes closing the door, or using a temporary screen door if needed, to keep cats out. The ASPCA also describes a cat seeking warmth near a newborn’s face as a potential breathing concern, which is the practical reason a sleep area must stay entirely cat-free rather than just “mostly” cat-free.

Cats Protection’s leaflet specifically cautions against cot or pram nets because they may fail and could harm the cat or the baby. The table below compares the access-control options the sources address.

Cot or pram nets Cats Protection’s leaflet warns they may fail and could harm the cat or baby. Do not use as a barrier.

Supervision as the baby grows

9. Supervise every cat and baby interaction

Cats Protection states: “A newborn is especially vulnerable, so you should take precautions to prevent any accidents and therefore cats and babies should always be supervised.” Its leaflet says not to leave a baby and cat together unsupervised, even if the cat is trusted. Supervision means an adult is awake and attending to both, not that someone is down the hall.

This matters more, not less, as the baby becomes mobile. Sudden movement, grabbing, or loud noise can frighten a cat, and a cat that feels cornered may swat or bite. Plan for the cat to have a route away from the baby, and make sure the baby cannot reach the cat’s retreat unsupervised. Keep the cat’s food and litter out of the baby’s reach as well.

When behaviour changes

10. Treat behaviour changes as a reason to get help

Changes such as toileting outside the tray, excessive vocalisation or aggression can accompany stress, but do not assume the cause is the baby. Cats Protection advises asking a veterinarian to rule out medical causes first. If no medical cause is found, or the behaviour persists, a referral to a qualified cat behaviourist is the next step. Keep notes on when the behaviour happens, what preceded it and how long it lasts, since that record helps both professionals.

Can cats make babies sick?

The guidance from Cats Protection and the ASPCA focuses on supervision, sleep-space safety and reducing stress for both cat and baby. Neither source establishes that a healthy household cat makes a baby sick simply by living in the home. Pregnant people with questions about toxoplasmosis or other infection risks should speak with their obstetric clinician, and anyone with concerns about the cat’s health should contact their veterinarian. Washing hands after handling the litter tray and keeping the cat’s food and litter areas tidy are sensible everyday habits in a home with a newborn.
