Siamese cats are shorthaired, blue-eyed, colorpoint cats known for being active, social, and often vocal. Their origins are not known with certainty, and breed registries differ on which pointed colors and patterns qualify for show. Here are 11 facts about their history, appearance, personality, lifespan, and relationship to related breeds.

1. Siamese origins are not known with certainty

Breed registries point to historical records from Siam, now Thailand, as clues to the breed’s origins. TICA refers to a cat-poem manuscript from around 1350 depicting a pale cat with dark extremities; CFA also cites historic Thai cat poems from the Ayutthaya period. These depictions are historical evidence of pointed cats, not proof of an exact lineage to every modern pedigree Siamese.

2. The breed appeared at a London cat show in 1871

TICA dates the Siamese’s European debut to the Crystal Palace Cat Show in London in 1871. The breed’s later show history helped establish it beyond its historical home in Siam.

3. Siam was an early Siamese cat in the United States

A Siamese cat named Siam was given to Lucy Webb Hayes, wife of President Rutherford B. Hayes, by the U.S. Consul in Bangkok. Breed registries place this arrival in the late 1870s, but differ on the year: TICA gives 1879, while CFA gives 1878. Both accounts identify Siam as an early known Siamese cat in the United States.

4. Their coat has darker points and a paler body

Siamese cats have a colorpoint coat: darker color appears on the face, ears, legs, feet, and tail, contrasting with a paler body. Blue eyes are a hallmark of the breed. CFA describes the pointed gene as producing darker color on the extremities while the body remains pale.

5. Siamese kittens may look paler before their points develop

Siamese kittens are often born pale, and their darker points become more apparent as they grow. CFA also notes that the coat can darken with age. The degree and appearance of color vary among individual cats.

6. The breed is long-bodied, athletic, and shorthaired

Siamese breed descriptions emphasize a long-bodied, fine-boned, athletic cat with a short, close-lying coat. A refined outline is part of the breed’s characteristic appearance, though individual cats may differ.

7. Accepted Siamese colors depend on the registry

Color standards are not universal. CFA lists four traditional Siamese point colors, while TICA accepts all colors and patterns in the pointed category for show.

Registry Color or pattern scope
CFA Seal, chocolate, blue, and lilac point
TICA All colors and patterns in the pointed category, including options such as lynx and tortie points

A pointed coat alone does not establish formal Siamese pedigree. Registry terminology and breed definitions matter when identifying a pedigree cat.

11. Siamese cats are related to several breeds

TICA describes the Siamese as the parent breed for a Siamese Breed Group that includes the Balinese, Oriental Shorthair, and Oriental Longhair. TICA and CFA describe the Balinese as a longhaired Siamese or longhaired variety of Siamese. These descriptions refer to breed-group relationships; they do not mean that every related breed is identical to the Siamese.
