12 Cat Brushes for Shedding: Picks by Coat Type and Comfort

Find a shedding brush that fits your cat’s coat and tolerance: slickers and combs for longer coats, rubber or bristle options for cats wary of pins, and cautious use of undercoat tools.

The right shedding brush depends on your cat’s coat, undercoat and tolerance for grooming—not on how much fur a tool collects in one session. For a long, dense coat, start with a slicker or long-toothed comb; for a short coat or a cat wary of wire pins, try a soft-bristle or rubber brush. Use undercoat tools carefully, and get professional help for severe mats.

How to choose a cat brush for shedding

Match the tool to the coat first. A veterinary hospital handout says stiff-bristle brushes can remove loose hair from short coats or sparse undercoats, while long-toothed metal combs or brushes suit medium- and long-haired cats. A thick topcoat may keep some slickers from reaching the undercoat, so a second tool may help if your cat tolerates it. Jordan Veterinary Hospital’s coat-care handout

  • Short or sparse coat: Try a soft-bristle or rubber brush. A cat that dislikes wire pins may accept rubber more readily.
  • Medium or long coat: Consider a slicker or long-toothed comb that can work through the coat. Choose bristle length and tool size to suit your cat.
  • Long, dense coat with loose undercoat: A suitable undercoat tool may help, but it is not a substitute for untangling first, and it must be used according to its model-specific instructions.
  • Skittish cat: A rubber brush or grooming glove may be easier to introduce, though gloves may remove less undercoat than tools designed for that job.

Comfort and control matter as much as hair removal. Consider whether the brush fits your cat’s body, whether you can use it gently, how easily it cleans, and how your cat responds. NBC Select’s expert guide discusses brush types and these practical selection factors: NBC Select’s cat-brush guide.

12 cat brushes for shedding, grouped by what they suit

The picks below are the products and tradeoffs described in Catster’s September 15, 2026 roundup. Catster says its selection considers customer reviews, brand reputation, veterinary experience and, in some cases, hands-on testing; that does not establish that every item was individually tested. These are source-reported descriptions, not comparative lab results. Catster’s roundup

For everyday brushing and loose coat hair

  • Hartz Groomer’s Best Slicker Brush for Cats: Catster’s best-overall pick. Fine bristles are described as removing loose undercoat hair, with protective tips and an ergonomic handle as benefits. Grooming a thick or dense coat may take longer.
  • Safari Self-Cleaning Slicker Brush: Its button releases a pad of collected hair. Catster describes it as useful for dead hair, but some cats dislike metal pins, and a thick topcoat can limit undercoat reach.
  • Hertzko Self-Cleaning Dog & Cat Slicker Brush: Retracting pins make cleanup easier, and Catster describes it as useful on long coats. The roundup notes reports of button problems and says it may feel too rough for short-haired cats. NBC Select also notes that the slicker it covers has retractable pins but no rubber tips.
  • JW Pet GripSoft Cat Slicker Brush: A smaller, round-headed option. Catster notes that cleaning it can be difficult and that some cats may be sensitive to its wire pins.
  • Li’l Pals Coated Tips Cat Slicker Brush: Coated tips are intended to be gentler, but the very small head can make grooming slower. Catster warns that if the coating breaks, sharper bristles may be exposed.
  • Four Paws Magic Coat Professional Slicker Wire Cat Brush: Its larger head may suit a large, long-haired cat, and Catster describes it as useful for detangling. Its uncoated tips may not suit sensitive cats.

For cats that prefer rubber or gentler contact

  • KONG’s rubber grooming brush: Catster’s best-value pick is a rubber brush described as suitable for all coat lengths and as a massaging tool that collects loose hair. It may not reach the undercoat of very fluffy cats or hold hair as well as other brush styles. NBC Select describes rubber brushes as a gentler option for sensitive or skittish cats.
  • Frisco Cat Curry Brush: A rubber option for cats that resist slickers or undercoat tools. Catster says it can massage and remove some dead hair, but does not retain fur well or reach the undercoat effectively on long coats.
  • Safari Bristle Cat Brush: A gentle starter option for kittens and some short-haired adults with minimal undercoat. Catster says it is unlikely to provide strong shedding control for most adult cats.

For loose undercoat or coat maintenance—used with care

  • FURminator Long Hair Cat deShedding Tool: A targeted undercoat tool for long-haired cats. Catster says it is less effective on matted or tangled fur and that incorrect use can damage coat or skin. The manufacturer’s directions for its small short-hair model caution against use on non-shedding breeds or pets with particularly sensitive skin; check the instructions for the exact model you have.
  • Paws & Pals Dog and Cat deShedding Tool: Catster describes it as a lower-priced undercoat option. Its smaller blade may be less effective on long-haired cats.
  • Pet Republique Dematting Rake (Shedding Brush Variant): Catster’s premium choice. Its steel rake teeth are described as addressing loose fur and mats in medium- to long-haired coats. Use carefully to avoid skin irritation; do not try to force out a severe mat with a rake.

How to use a shedding brush without irritating your cat

  1. Check the coat before brushing. Look for tangles, mats, sore areas or skin irritation. Do not run an undercoat tool over a mat or use a rake to force one apart.
  2. Start gently and watch your cat. Use light strokes and stop if your cat shows discomfort. Jordan Veterinary Hospital advises: “Whatever the choice of brush you use, it is important to be gentle when using it, and to avoid excessive pulling on tangles.”
  3. Follow the exact tool instructions. Deshedding tools differ by model and coat type. The manufacturer’s guidance for one FURminator model, for example, warns against using it on non-shedding breeds or pets with particularly sensitive skin; do not assume that instruction covers every model or every tool. FURminator’s instructions for its small short-hair cat tool
  4. Stop when brushing becomes uncomfortable. More force or more passes are not a safe way to increase shedding control. NBC Select’s experts caution against overgrooming and emphasize matching the tool to the cat’s fur length.
  5. Seek help for severe or extensive mats. The veterinary handout recommends professional groomer or veterinary care for severe or extensive tangles. Cutting a mat at home can cut the cat’s skin if the skin is caught close to it.

How often should you brush a shedding cat?

Catit gives general grooming guidance of once or twice a week for short-haired cats and every one to three days for long-haired cats to help prevent mats and tangles. Treat this as general guidance rather than a veterinary rule; your cat’s coat and tolerance determine what is practical. Catit’s grooming guidance

No robust comparative statistic establishes how much shedding any of these twelve brushes reduces. Choose by coat fit and comfort, then judge whether the routine is manageable for both you and your cat—not by an unsupported promise of a particular percentage of hair removed.
