Popular cat breeds vary by country and by how popularity is measured. The first 10 breeds below follow the Cat Fanciers’ Association (CFA) 2026 U.S. ranking of pedigreed cats registered in the prior year; Siamese and Bengal broaden the list beyond that registry ranking. This is not a definitive ranking of all cats living in homes.

1. Maine Coon
The Maine Coon took the No. 1 spot in the CFA’s 2026 ranking, its second consecutive year at the top. Its shaggy coat, tufted ears, long tail, and large frame give it an unmistakable appearance, but its appeal is more than size. Many Maine Coons are sociable, playful, and adaptable without demanding constant attention.
That thick coat benefits from regular combing to reduce tangles, particularly around the ruff, belly, and hind legs. A Maine Coon also needs sturdy climbing furniture, large litter equipment, and enough room to move comfortably. Individual cats vary considerably, so do not choose one based on the promise of an extreme adult size.
2. Ragdoll
Ragdolls combine vivid blue eyes with a semi-long, silky, color-point coat. They are often described as relaxed, people-oriented cats and can make affectionate companions in homes that want a cat involved in everyday life.

- Used Book in Good Condition
The familiar claim that a Ragdoll always goes limp when picked up is not a guarantee. Some enjoy being handled; others prefer keeping all four paws on the floor. Brush the coat regularly, introduce handling gradually, and judge the individual cat’s personality rather than relying on the breed nickname.
3. Persian
Persians remain popular for their luxurious long coats, rounded appearance, and generally serene temperament. They are often happiest in a predictable home with calm interaction rather than constant commotion.
The coat is a serious commitment. Many Persians need frequent, sometimes daily, combing to prevent mats. A responsible breeder should also prioritize breathing, eye, dental, and overall structural health instead of exaggerated facial features. A Persian can be a wonderful companion, but it is not a low-maintenance choice.
4. Exotic Shorthair
The Exotic Shorthair—listed as Exotic by CFA—is sometimes called a short-haired Persian because it has a similar rounded look and typically a more manageable coat. Its dense short fur still benefits from regular brushing, especially during shedding periods.
Exotics are often described as affectionate and comparatively easygoing. However, a shorter coat does not remove the health considerations associated with extreme facial conformation. When choosing an Exotic, look for a breeder who screens for health and favors functional eyes, nostrils, teeth, and breathing over an exaggerated look.
5. Devon Rex
The Devon Rex stands out with its soft, wavy coat, oversized ears, prominent cheekbones, and elfin expression. CFA ranked it No. 5 overall and the most popular shorthair breed in its 2026 list.
Rank #2
This is an active, affectionate, people-focused cat that usually benefits from interactive toys, climbing options, and regular social contact. Its coat may feel delicate, but “non-shedding” and “hypoallergenic” are inaccurate descriptions. Devon Rex cats still produce allergens, and some may need protection from cold because their coat is relatively light.
6. Abyssinian
An Abyssinian’s coat has several color bands on each individual hair, creating its distinctive ticked appearance. The result is an elegant, wild-looking pattern on a domestic cat with a lively, inquisitive character.

Abyssinians are highly active and intelligent. Puzzle feeders, training games, tall cat trees, and rotating toys can help keep them occupied. They may be a poor match for someone seeking a quiet lap cat that is content to sleep most of the day. As with every breed, activity level varies, but an Abyssinian generally needs more engagement than its graceful appearance suggests.
7. British Shorthair
The British Shorthair has a dense plush coat, rounded features, and a solid, balanced build. Its broad range of colors and patterns—and its calm, undemanding reputation—have helped make it one of TICA’s top five most registered breeds as well as CFA’s No. 7 breed.
Many British Shorthairs enjoy being near their people without needing to be carried or entertained constantly. They are not necessarily traditional lap cats. Their sturdy build also makes sensible portions and regular play important, since a sedentary indoor lifestyle can lead to excess weight.
8. Siberian
Siberians are substantial, athletic cats with semi-long to long coats and a reputation for being affectionate and engaged with their families. Their coat may look demanding, but its texture and grooming needs differ from those of a Persian; regular combing is still wise, especially when the cat is shedding.
Siberians are sometimes marketed as hypoallergenic. That is not a reliable promise. All cats produce allergens, and people can react differently to individual animals. Anyone with allergies should spend time with the specific cat before making a commitment, rather than relying on the breed name.
9. American Shorthair
The American Shorthair is a distinct pedigreed breed—not simply another name for an ordinary short-haired mixed-breed cat. It has a muscular body, a short coat, and numerous colors and patterns. CFA describes it as even-tempered, affectionate, playful, and independent enough to entertain itself.
This adaptable combination suits many households, provided the cat has opportunities to play and stalk toys. Its strong hunting instinct can be directed toward wand toys, food puzzles, and climbing equipment. “Domestic shorthair,” by contrast, generally describes a non-pedigreed cat of unknown or mixed ancestry; coat length alone does not establish American Shorthair identity.
10. Russian Blue
The Russian Blue is recognized for its dense blue-gray coat with silver tipping and vivid green eyes. Its short coat generally requires relatively little grooming, making it attractive to people who prefer a polished appearance without extensive coat maintenance.

Russian Blues are intelligent and can form close bonds with their families. Some are reserved around unfamiliar people and may need time to adjust after moving to a new home. Provide hiding places, predictable routines, and gentle introductions rather than expecting instant sociability.
11. Siamese
Siamese cats have a slender body, wedge-shaped head, large ears, almond-shaped eyes, and color-point markings. They are famous for being vocal and socially involved, and many will follow their people from room to room while communicating their opinions.

A Siamese may thrive with daily play, training, and plenty of interaction, but personality is never guaranteed by breed. Also, not every pointed cat is a pedigreed Siamese. Colorpoint Shorthairs, other pointed breeds, and non-pedigreed domestic cats can look similar. Coat pattern is not enough to confirm breed; pedigree or documented lineage is needed.
12. Bengal
Bengals bring a spotted or marbled coat and an athletic, energetic personality to the list. TICA includes Bengal among its top five most registered breeds and notes its dynamic character and frequent interest in water.

This is usually not the best choice for a home seeking a decorative, low-interaction cat. Bengals often need climbing space, vigorous play, puzzle feeders, and regular engagement. They are domestic cats, not miniature wild animals, although the breed’s development included hybrid ancestry. Meet the individual cat and ask a breeder or rescue about its activity level before deciding.

A breed’s appearance is only one part of the decision. Match its likely needs to your household, schedule, and ability to pay for routine and unexpected veterinary care.
- Assess activity needs. Abyssinians, Bengals, Devon Rex cats, and many Siamese cats usually need more interactive play than a calm adult British Shorthair or Persian.
- Be honest about grooming. Persians, Ragdolls, Maine Coons, and Siberians need more coat care than Russian Blues or American Shorthairs. Short hair does not mean no shedding.
- Consider social expectations. A people-oriented breed may struggle if left alone for long periods. Conversely, a reserved or independent cat may dislike being constantly picked up.
- Plan the environment. Tall furniture, scratching posts, secure windows, food puzzles, and separated food, water, litter, and resting areas benefit almost every indoor cat.
- Choose health over appearance. Ask for veterinary records, screening information, vaccination details, and a clear explanation of the parents’ health. Be cautious about breeders who focus only on unusual size, extreme facial features, or rare colors.
- Meet the actual cat. Breed descriptions are tendencies, not personality contracts. An adult rescue cat can be easier to assess than a kitten, whose temperament is still developing.
Are any cat breeds hypoallergenic?
No cat breed is guaranteed hypoallergenic. The American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology explains that all cats produce allergens, and hair length is not a dependable measure of allergy risk. Allergens are associated with a cat’s skin-related material and body fluids, not just loose fur.
If allergies are a concern, spend time with the specific cat more than once, wash hands after handling, keep the bedroom cat-free, and discuss medical strategies with an allergy specialist. A Siberian, Devon Rex, hairless cat, or any other breed should not be presented as allergy-free.

What about domestic shorthair cats?
Domestic shorthairs are not a single pedigreed breed. The term usually describes cats with short coats and mixed or unknown ancestry. They are absent or underrepresented in registry rankings because registries count registered pedigreed cats, not every cat in the general population.
That does not make them less desirable. A domestic shorthair can be healthy, affectionate, athletic, and wonderfully suited to a family. Shelters and rescue groups have many such cats, including adults whose personalities are already apparent.
FAQ
What is the most popular cat breed in 2026?
CFA’s 2026 U.S. pedigreed-cat ranking places the Maine Coon first, followed by the Ragdoll and Persian. It measures CFA registration data from the prior year, not all cats owned in the United States or worldwide.
Which cat breed is best for families?
There is no universally best family breed. British Shorthairs, American Shorthairs, Maine Coons, Ragdolls, and many domestic shorthairs can suit family life, but the individual cat’s temperament, the children’s behavior, and the household’s routine matter more than the breed label alone.

No. Some people may react less strongly to an individual Siberian, but all cats produce allergens and no breed is guaranteed hypoallergenic. Spend time with the specific cat before adopting or purchasing one.
Is an American Shorthair the same as a domestic shorthair?
No. American Shorthair is a recognized pedigreed breed with a defined standard. Domestic shorthair generally refers to a non-pedigreed cat with a short coat and mixed or unknown ancestry.
The Bottom Line
The best cat breed is the one whose energy, grooming needs, social style, and likely health considerations fit your real life. The first 10 breeds in this guide follow CFA’s 2026 registry ranking; Siamese and Bengal broaden the selection with two especially recognizable breeds. Treat the ranking as a starting point, not a substitute for meeting the cat and checking its welfare and health.
Whether you choose a pedigreed cat or a domestic shorthair from a shelter, prioritize a sound body, responsible care, and a personality compatible with your home.
