Geckos vary widely: some climb smooth surfaces with specialized toe structures, while others cannot cling to glass; some blink, and a few can reproduce without males. Here are 12 surprising facts, with species-specific traits clearly distinguished from traits shared more broadly.

1. Gecko feet are not sticky in the usual sense

Many climbing geckos cling to smooth surfaces without glue, suction cups, or wetness. Their toes have microscopic hairs called setae, which branch into nanoscale spatulae. Together, these structures create weak van der Waals forces against a surface. PNAS research describes this dry-adhesion mechanism.

2. Their grip works best in one direction

Gecko adhesion is directional: the toes engage when pressed and pulled along a surface, then release as the animal peels them away. This allows rapid, controlled attachment and detachment. A review in MRS Bulletin discusses how this structure works.

3. Walking can help clean their feet

Dirt can interfere with toe-pad contact, but particles may adhere more strongly to the surface being walked on than to the structures on a gecko’s toes. Walking and peeling the toes away can therefore help restore grip. This self-cleaning effect is described in research published in the Journal of the Royal Society Interface.

4. Water can interfere with their famous grip

Water can disrupt the dry adhesion used by climbing geckos. Tokay geckos can regain much of their grip by walking over a dry surface, a process researchers call active self-drying. See the study in PLOS ONE.

5. Not every gecko has adhesive toe pads

Leopard geckos and African fat-tailed geckos lack the specialized adhesive pads found in many climbing geckos. Their clawed toes suit terrestrial or rocky environments instead. The Animal Diversity Web leopard gecko account and fat-tailed gecko account describe these differences.

Gecko type Typical foot adaptation General lifestyle
Tokay and many other climbing geckos Adhesive toe structures Arboreal or vertical climbing
Leopard gecko Clawed toes without adhesive pads Primarily terrestrial
African fat-tailed gecko Clawed toes without specialized adhesive pads Primarily terrestrial

6. Many geckos cannot blink

In numerous gecko species, the eyelids are fused into a transparent covering, so the animals cannot blink normally. They clean the eye surface with their tongues. Eublepharine geckos, including leopard geckos, are an exception and have functional eyelids. See the Smithsonian’s Tokay gecko information and the Animal Diversity Web leopard gecko account.

7. Some geckos have a light-sensitive third eye

Tokay geckos retain a small, rudimentary structure called a parietal eye, or median eye. It does not form normal images, but it is light-sensitive and associated with the pineal gland; it may help regulate activity patterns. This is not a feature to assume in every gecko. The Smithsonian National Zoo describes it.

8. A dropped tail can keep moving

Many geckos can use tail autotomy, deliberately releasing the tail to escape a predator. In species such as the tokay gecko, the detached tail may thrash for several minutes, diverting attention as the gecko flees. A replacement tail is often shorter or differently shaped. See the Smithsonian’s Tokay gecko information.

9. The tail is important before it is lost

A gecko’s tail can store energy and contribute to balance. Losing it carries costs, so autotomy is generally a defensive response rather than something the animal does casually. Tail structure and regeneration vary by species. The Animal Diversity Web account of the African fat-tailed gecko discusses the tail’s role.

10. Geckos can be surprisingly loud

Depending on the species, geckos may click, chirp, squeak, bark, hiss, or croak. These sounds can serve territorial, courtship, alarm, or defensive functions; the familiar “gecko” call is not representative of every species. See the Smithsonian acoustic-behavior study and the Animal Diversity Web Mediterranean house gecko account.

11. A few geckos can reproduce without males

The mourning gecko, Lepidodactylus lugubris, is a well-documented example of parthenogenesis: females can produce offspring without fertilization. Its populations include genetically distinct clonal lineages. This ability is restricted to particular species or lineages, not shared by all female geckos. See the U.S. Geological Survey research and a peer-reviewed chromosome study.

12. Body shape can be camouflage

Tokay geckos have skin folds that can reduce the shadow outline of the body against tree bark. Leaf-tailed geckos use flattened bodies and distinctive tail shapes to resemble leaves, bark, or other parts of the forest background. See the Animal Diversity Web tokay gecko account and the American Museum of Natural History.

What these facts mean for gecko owners

Geckos are not interchangeable. Before buying or handling one, learn its species-specific needs:

  1. Confirm whether it is arboreal or terrestrial. Adhesive toe pads occur in many climbing geckos, not all geckos.
  2. Learn its normal eye structure. Leopard geckos can blink; many other geckos cannot.
  3. Handle the body, never the tail. Tail autotomy can be stressful and carries costs.
  4. Expect species-specific sounds. Some geckos vocalize, while others are quieter.
  5. Check reproductive biology. Parthenogenetic species do not represent geckos as a whole.
  6. Provide an appropriate enclosure. Terrestrial and arboreal species have different habitat needs.

FAQ

Can all geckos walk on glass?

No. Many climbing geckos have adhesive toe pads, but terrestrial species such as leopard geckos and African fat-tailed geckos lack them and cannot cling to glass in the same way.

Do geckos use suction to climb walls?

No. Adhesive geckos use microscopic setae and nanoscale spatulae that create van der Waals forces with a surface. Their grip is dry rather than suction-based.

Can a gecko regrow its tail?

Many geckos can regenerate a replacement after tail autotomy, but the new tail is often shorter or differently shaped. Tail loss and regeneration vary among species.

Can female geckos have babies without a male?

Only certain species or lineages can reproduce through parthenogenesis. The mourning gecko is a well-documented example; this ability is not shared by all female geckos.

The Bottom Line

Geckos are a diverse group, not one standardized type of lizard. Some climb with nanoscale toe structures, while others rely on claws; some blink, some clean their eyes with their tongues, and a few can reproduce without males. Knowing the species behind the name is essential for understanding its behavior and care.
