Chinese cat names can draw on affectionate repetition, food, appearance, personality, or the sounds cats make. This guide gives you 120+ options with Chinese characters, tone-marked Mandarin pinyin, and brief meanings—while distinguishing examples reported in a Taiwan naming study from additional Mandarin suggestions. Choose by the written characters as well as the sound: pinyin alone can hide different meanings.
How to choose a Chinese name for your cat
Start with the characters and intended meaning, then consider how the Mandarin pronunciation sounds when you call your cat. Pinyin is a pronunciation system, not a unique spelling of meaning: 妹妹 and 美美 are both romanized mèimei, but mean “younger sister” and “pretty,” respectively.

- Characters: Make sure the written form carries the meaning you intend.
- Tones: Mandarin tones are part of pronunciation; the marks in pinyin distinguish them.
- Regional scope: Pronunciations here are Mandarin. Chinese-language communities also use other languages and varieties, whose pronunciations may differ.
- Verification: The entries below are editorial suggestions, not a professionally verified dictionary of cat names. Ask a knowledgeable Mandarin speaker to check the characters, tones, and gloss before settling on one.
The Ministry of Education’s Revised Mandarin Chinese Dictionary gives 貓 as māo, meaning “cat” in Mandarin. See the dictionary entry.

What naming patterns have been documented?
Lindsey N. H. Chen’s 2017 study examined 321 pet names collected from online sources in Taiwan: 164 cat names and 157 dog names. Chen found repeated forms, food references, endearment markers such as xiǎo-X, A-X, and X-bǎo, borrowings, and sound associations. The study says, “Rather, the results show that names of dogs and cats in Taiwan are mainly characterized by reduplication, food references, and markers of endearment (in particular, the forms xiao-X, A-X, and X-bao).” Read the study.

How to pronounce Mandarin cat names
For Mandarin, 貓 is pronounced māo: the first tone is high and level. Pinyin tone marks matter; for example, māo is not the same pronunciation as mǎo. Read names with their marks, and ask a fluent speaker to say your chosen name aloud if you are unsure how the tones flow together.

This list is a set of name ideas, not a verified current popularity ranking. Chen’s 2017 research describes a Taiwan online sample, not cat owners across China or all Chinese-speaking communities. A secondary listing reports names from purported 2020 surveys, but the original reports and methods are not established here; those mentions cannot support a current ranking.
