Looking for a Japanese cat name? Start with survey-listed favorites such as Mugi, Rin, Azuki, Momo, and Hana, or browse more than 120 ideas below. Treat the larger list as inspiration: a romanized name does not determine its Japanese spelling, and meanings depend on the exact word and writing you choose.
Recent Japanese surveys offer useful examples, but they do not establish one universal ranking. Choose a name that is easy for your household to say, fits your cat or your interests, and has a spelling or meaning you have checked if that matters to you.

For example, Mugi was first in both the Anicom and Poponeko results, but the counts came from separate samples: 405 newly insured cats in Anicom’s table and 35 survey responses at Poponeko. Petline’s different result is a reminder to name the source and scope whenever describing a name as popular.

A small guide to meaning and writing
Some common words have straightforward meanings when written in a particular way: neko (猫) means “cat,” mochi (餅) is a rice cake, and sakura (桜) refers to cherry blossoms. These examples do not mean that every romanized name has one fixed spelling or meaning.
Japanese names and words can be written in hiragana, katakana, or kanji. Poponeko notes that Mugi, for example, appears as むぎ, ムギ, or 麦, while Rin also has multiple possible forms. If you want to use kanji, confirm that the intended reading and meaning match the exact characters you select.

How to choose a name
- Say it aloud. Try calling the name as you would at home, and make sure everyone can pronounce it consistently.
- Choose your priority. Decide whether sound, a personal association, your cat’s appearance, or a verified meaning matters most.
- Check the writing. If you want Japanese characters, verify the exact spelling and reading rather than choosing characters from a romanized sound alone.
- Try a nickname. A longer idea such as Genmaicha or Nekomata can have a shorter everyday form.
- Keep rankings in context. A name appearing near the top of one survey does not prove it is the most popular name nationwide.
Put the name on an ID tag
Once you have chosen a name, a personalized cat ID tag can display it alongside your contact number. Poponeko describes a name tag with a phone number field; no particular product or listing has been verified here. Check that any chosen tag can show the information legibly.

What is the Japanese word for cat?
Neko (猫) is the ordinary Japanese word for “cat.” Nyanko (にゃんこ) is an affectionate, cute form often rendered as “kitty.”
Are all the names in this list traditional Japanese names?
No. The list mixes survey-listed names, Japanese words, human-style names, and cultural or creative inspirations. It is a set of naming ideas, not a list of 120 verified traditional names.
