Most of the breeds on this list can be white, but white is rarely the whole identity of a breed. For the Turkish Angora, white is the traditional and most recognizable coat, and TICA identifies the Khao Manee by its shining white coat. For the other breeds, white is one accepted color among several, and whether a given white cat meets a registry’s standard depends on that registry’s current rules.
If you are specifically looking at white cats with blue eyes, the hearing section below matters more than any breed feature. A white coat does not tell you whether a cat can hear.
How to read this list
Treat each entry as a breed that can appear in white, not a promise that every cat of that breed is white. Coat color is not proof of pedigree either: a white domestic cat is not automatically purebred, and a white cat sold as a particular breed should come with registration papers you can verify. Breed standards and color eligibility differ between registries such as TICA and CFA, so check the registry that matters to you before assuming a color is acceptable.
Personality and care notes below describe general breed tendencies. Individual cats vary, and a breed profile is a starting point rather than a guarantee.

The 15 breeds
1. Turkish Angora
Look for: a long, fine, silky single coat, a plumed tail and a slender, fine-boned body. White is the color most people picture for this breed, and it is the traditional coat for the Angora.
Temperament tendency: lively, intelligent and often attached to its people. White Angoras with blue eyes fall within the hearing concern described below.
2. Persian
Look for: a long, dense coat, a rounded head and a short, flattened face with large, round eyes. In white, the coat’s density shows every tangle.
Temperament tendency: often calm and quiet. Daily grooming is the central care task for this breed, and TICA recommends a metal comb for the routine.
3. British Shorthair
Look for: a round head and cheeks, a dense, plush short coat and a stocky, compact body. The breed is widely described as having a round, sturdy look that reads very differently in white than in tabby.
Temperament tendency: typically calm and undemanding, comfortable with being left alone for periods.

Hereditary deafness is a recognized concern in white cats, and the risk is highest when one or both eyes are blue. Deafness here is about hearing, not vision, and eye color does not diagnose it in an individual cat.
What the Cornell estimates show
Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine publishes population estimates of congenital deafness in white cats. The page is undated, so treat the figures as Cornell’s current published estimates rather than a dated study.
| White cat eye pattern | Estimated share born deaf (Cornell) |
|---|---|
| Non-blue eyes | 17 to 22 percent |
| One blue eye | 40 percent |
| Both eyes blue | 65 to 85 percent |
These are population estimates, not a diagnosis for any individual cat.
A separate Cornell estimate for two blue eyes
A separate Cornell overview quotes James Flanders, DVM, associate professor of surgery, Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine: “About 80 percent of white cats with two blue eyes will start to show signs of deafness when they are about four days old as the result of cochlear degeneration.” That overview is also undated. It describes a different framing from the population table above, so do not treat the two as one study or one population.
The Turkish Van study
TICA’s genetics committee report, issued in 2024, summarizes a 2023 study by Almac and Kaya of solid white Turkish Van cats. The study reported that:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- 25 percent of cats with two blue eyes were deaf.
- 6 percent of cats with amber eyes were deaf.
- 12 percent of odd-eyed cats were deaf.
This is one specific population. Do not apply these figures to every breed or every white cat.
How hearing is tested
TICA states that BAER testing can determine full or partial deafness in some white cats. Ask a breeder or veterinarian whether a kitten or adult has been assessed, and do not infer hearing from eye color alone.
Quick Recap
Choosing a white cat: a short checklist
- Confirm the breed and registration with the registry you care about, and check its current color standard for that exact breed.
- Do not treat a white coat as proof of pedigree.
- If the cat has blue eyes, ask whether BAER testing has been done, and request the result in writing.
- Match the coat to your time: Persian and Maine Coon coats need regular brushing, while Devon Rex and Cornish Rex need little coat care.
- Ask about temperament and activity level for the specific line, since breed tendencies are not guarantees.
