For a broader shortlist, choose from names drawn from Egyptian, Greek, Roman, Norse, Hindu, Celtic, and other traditions—or pick a name for its sound and story rather than a claimed connection to cats.
The names below are ideas, not a popularity ranking. Apart from Bastet and a few other historically grounded associations noted here, these suggestions are offered as naming inspiration; they are not all cat goddesses.

How to choose a goddess name for your cat
- Start with the sound. Say the name aloud as you might when calling your cat. Short forms can make longer mythological names easier to use.
- Choose a tradition or story. You might prefer a name from a mythology you already enjoy, or one whose story fits the mood you want the name to evoke.
- Let personality guide you, if you like. A bold, gentle, curious, or playful association can be a fun fit, but a name does not predict or change a cat’s temperament.
- Keep the historical claim precise. Bastet has the strongest direct cat association among these choices. Most other names are goddess-inspired options, not evidence of a cat connection.
Egyptian goddess cat names
Bastet is the standout if you want a name with a direct historical feline association. The Global Egyptian Museum describes her as a cat goddess and notes that she was probably originally a lion goddess; later traditions mainly regarded her as a cat. The Metropolitan Museum of Art describes her as protective and associated with fertility, and says her cat-headed form emphasizes peaceful traits.
Museum objects offer a glimpse of that history: The Met dates a cat-headed Bastet statuette to 664–30 BCE, while the British Museum dates its Gayer-Anderson cat, a bronze figure depicting one form of Bastet, to around 600 BCE. Bastet’s changing representations are why it is more accurate to say she was associated with cats and also represented in lioness form than to call her exclusively a cat deity across every period.
