Before you choose: a quick Great Dane naming checklist
- Favor clarity. One- or two-syllable names are usually easy to say during everyday life and training.
- Check for cue confusion. Avoid a name that sounds like a training cue or a person’s name in your household—for example, “Kit” can sound like “sit,” while “Moe” or “Joe” can sound like “no.”
- Say it in public. A name should feel comfortable when called at the park, veterinary clinic, or training class.
- Consider the whole dog. A giant, elegant dog can suit a grand name, but a comic or understated name may better capture a goofy, affectionate personality.
- Get household agreement. Everyone who will call the dog should be able to pronounce and remember it.
- Test the finalists. Say each name indoors, outdoors, around mealtimes, and during a recall exercise for several days. Pair the name with attention, treats, play, and other positive experiences.
A Great Dane’s size varies by individual. As breed-level reference ranges, males are typically about 30–32 inches tall and 140–175 pounds, while females are typically about 28–30 inches and 110–140 pounds. Those figures are not a guarantee of a particular puppy’s adult size. The breed’s size and strength are serious ownership considerations, even though many Great Danes are known for a gentle, dependable temperament. Individual dogs, of course, have their own personalities.

How to choose the final name
1. Start with the name you can say naturally
You may say your dog’s name dozens of times a day, so test the rhythm out loud. One- and two-syllable names are often especially practical because they are quick to call and easy to distinguish. Longer names can still work as formal or registered names with a shorter everyday call name—for example, “Lady Genevieve” could become “Lady” or “Gen.”
2. Try it in real situations
Call each finalist from another room, say it before meals, use it in the yard, and practice a short recall. Notice whether the dog looks toward you and whether the name remains easy to hear over ordinary household noise. Pair the name with attention and positive reinforcement rather than repeating it when you are frustrated.

Say the name alongside the cues you expect to use. A name that resembles “sit,” “stay,” “down,” “come,” “heel,” or “no” can create unnecessary confusion. Also consider names that sound like the names of family members, roommates, or other pets. You do not need perfect linguistic separation, but obvious overlap is worth avoiding.

- SILENT, NO JINGLE, NO DANGLE: The tag slides flat onto the collar or harness so there is no jingling when your dog or cat eats, walks, or plays at home.
- BUILT TO STAY PUT: A stainless steel plate that never rusts sits inside a soft, elastic silicone band that grips the collar snugly and lies flat, so it will not swing, snag, or slip off during everyday wear.
- LASER-ENGRAVED, NOT PRINTED: Your pet's name and phone number are engraved by laser and sealed into the surface, so the text stays clear, easy to read, and waterproof for the life of the tag.
- PERSONALIZE IN SECONDS: Click Customize Now to type up to 4 lines of text and pick from multiple colors; choose Small, Large, or Extra Large so the tag fits collars from kittens and puppies to large dogs and horses.
- US SMALL FAMILY BUSINESS: Made and engraved in Orlando, Florida, so your tag ships faster than overseas sellers, and if anything arrives with a defect our team replaces it right away, no hassle.
4. Let the name fit without trying to predict behavior
A name can reflect your Great Dane’s size, coat, elegance, or goofy habits. It cannot guarantee that the dog will be gentle, brave, quiet, obedient, or any other particular way. Breed descriptions describe tendencies, not the complete personality of every individual dog.
5. Renaming an adopted Great Dane
If your adopted dog already responds to a name, you can make the change gradually. For a transition period, say the old name followed immediately by the new name, then reward attention: “Bella, Hazel!” Once the dog consistently responds, begin using the new name on its own and gradually stop saying the old one. Consistency and positive associations help dogs learn that a new word refers to them.
6. Put the chosen name on identification
Once you have settled on a call name, a personalized dog ID tag makes it easy to display your Dane’s name and your contact information. An ID tag is one layer of identification and does not replace a microchip or keeping registration and contact details current. Check that the tag is legible and that it fits securely on a properly fitted collar.
