A 2024 taxonomic revision recognizes four king cobra species: the Northern king cobra (Ophiophagus hannah), Sunda king cobra (O. bungarus), Western Ghats king cobra (O. kaalinga) and Luzon king cobra (O. salvatana). The authors described two as new species and revived the name O. bungarus for the Sunda lineage. This is the conclusion of that published revision; it does not by itself establish that every taxonomic database or conservation authority has adopted the four-species treatment.
What did the 2024 study change?
King cobras were long treated as one species, Ophiophagus hannah. The revision reevaluated that species complex and recognized four geographically distinct species. It described the Western Ghats and Luzon forms as new species, and restored O. bungarus as the name for the Sunda lineage.
The authors examined 153 preserved specimens: 148 entire specimens and five skeletal specimens. Their diagnoses use qualitative, mensural and meristic morphological characters, supported by recent molecular phylogenetic analysis. The paper also provides a dichotomous key to identify the four species.

These ranges are not interchangeable: the revision separates lineages associated with mainland Asia, the Sunda Shelf and nearby areas, the Western Ghats, and Luzon. It does not settle which species name applies to king cobras throughout the Philippines.

How did scientists distinguish the species?
The authors’ formal diagnoses rely on combinations of morphological characters, and their paper’s dichotomous key is intended to distinguish the four species. Banding is one visible feature discussed in news coverage, but individual band counts should not be used alone as a field identification rule.
Scroll.in reported that study lead P. Gowri Shankar described fewer than 40 bands for O. kaalinga, 40–70 for O. hannah, and more than 70 for O. bungarus; the report also says adult O. salvatana bands can be faint and barely discernible. These reported counts are useful context, not a substitute for the full diagnostic treatment or expert identification.

Scroll.in also attributed an estimate of roughly 1%–4% genetic difference between lineages to Shankar. That figure is a reported statement in the coverage, rather than a stand-alone result specified in the paper’s abstract.
Does the discovery change conservation or antivenom treatment?
Conservation assessment
The authors argue that recognizing narrower endemic species can improve biodiversity assessment and conservation attention, especially for the Western Ghats and Luzon forms. Down To Earth quoted the authors saying that recognizing biological diversity is important to its assessment and conservation. This is a reason to assess these lineages carefully, not evidence that new protections have already been enacted.

Venom and snakebite research
Recognizing separate species makes it relevant to investigate whether venom and treatment responses differ among regional lineages. It does not establish that four effective antivenoms exist or demonstrate clinical outcomes for bites from all four species.
Scroll.in reported that Thai Red Cross Society king cobra antivenom is considered effective only for O. hannah envenoming and may not work for other species; it also reported that India lacks a specific king cobra antivenom. Those are geographically specific claims from the coverage, not individual treatment advice. The revision presents improved treatment as a subject for future study, not an accomplished result.

Is the four-species classification universally accepted?
The 2024 paper establishes what its authors recognize in their revision. The available evidence here does not establish how broadly taxonomic databases, governments or conservation agencies have adopted that treatment since publication. The most precise wording is that the 2024 revision recognizes four species.
Further diversity is also possible, but not formally established by this revision. Shankar told Scroll.in that king cobras could potentially comprise five or six species and that more research is needed. That is an attributed view about future work, not a description of additional named species.
