The most useful cat-care “hacks” are small routines: keep water easy to reach, make meals calm and consistent, fit grooming to your cat’s tolerance, and build play into the day. Here are 21 practical ideas—not a ranking or a substitute for veterinary advice.
Make water and meals easier
1. Refresh water every day
Wash and refill water bowls daily so clean, fresh water is always available. ASPCA general cat-care guidance recommends fresh water; Cornell’s hydration guidance also emphasizes access.
2. Put water where your cat can reach it
Choose an accessible spot rather than a location your cat must pass through a busy or contested area to reach. In a multi-pet home, check that another animal cannot guard or block the route.
3. Offer more than one water station if access is a problem
Separate locations can help when pets compete for resources or when one part of the home is inconvenient to reach. The aim is reliable access, not a particular number of bowls.

4. Try a fountain only if your cat likes it
Some cats drink more from a fountain, while others prefer a still bowl. Treat a fountain as an optional preference—not a guaranteed way to increase drinking or treat dehydration.
5. Ask before changing how you add water to meals
Wet food or adding water to food may increase water intake in some circumstances. Keep your cat’s dietary needs in view and ask a veterinarian before making a change when illness or a prescribed diet is involved.
6. Choose complete food suited to your cat’s life stage
Use nutritionally balanced food appropriate to the cat’s life stage. Cornell recommends balanced commercial food unless a veterinarian recommends a home-formulated diet for medical purposes. Ask your veterinarian for individualized guidance, particularly if your cat has a health condition.
7. Make the feeding spot calm
Set meals in a quiet place away from heavy traffic and other animals. Dirty dishes and stressful surroundings can deter eating, so keep the area clean and observe whether your cat can eat without being disturbed.

8. Keep food and water away from the litter box
Place bowls separately from the litter box. Cornell’s feeding guidance notes that proximity to a litter box can discourage eating.
9. Keep treats within a modest share of the diet
ASPCA guidance says treats should make up no more than 5–10% of a cat’s diet. That is general guidance, not an individual feeding prescription; your veterinarian can advise if your cat’s needs differ.
10. Refrigerate opened canned food
Store unused opened canned food in the refrigerator to maintain quality and reduce spoilage. Follow the food’s handling directions, and discard food that appears spoiled.
11. Don’t use human food as a casual meal replacement
Human foods may contain ingredients unsafe for cats. ASPCA specifically warns that baby food containing onion or garlic powder can poison pets. If your cat needs a special diet, ask a veterinarian rather than improvising with people food.

Make grooming calmer and more useful
12. Brush or comb on a schedule your cat tolerates
Regular brushing can remove loose fur, help keep the coat clean, reduce shedding, and cut down on hairballs, according to ASPCA grooming guidance. Match the brush or comb to your cat’s coat and comfort; stop if the session becomes stressful.
13. Use grooming time to notice changes
As you brush, look for changes in the skin or coat, including possible parasites or signs of disease. Cornell recommends grooming as one way to monitor skin health. A concerning finding is a reason to seek professional advice, not to treat it with a grooming tool.
14. Introduce gentle handling early when possible
Short, gentle grooming experiences can make the routine more familiar as a cat ages. Go at the cat’s pace and pause rather than forcing a session.
15. Get help if grooming could hurt either of you
If your cat resists strongly, mats are difficult to remove, or handling risks injury to the cat or person, don’t force it. ASPCA suggests seeking help from a professional groomer or veterinarian when grooming poses an injury risk.

16. Ask for a nail-trimming lesson
Regular nail trims can reduce damage from sharp claws and lower the risk of a nail growing into the paw pad. If you are unsure how to trim safely, ask your veterinarian to demonstrate.
17. Skip routine baths unless there is a reason
Cats rarely need baths in ordinary circumstances, according to ASPCA guidance. Don’t turn bathing into a required care ritual; ask a veterinarian about a specific coat or health concern.

18. Choose toys that invite natural behaviors
Use suitable toys to encourage exercise, cognitive enrichment, stalking, pouncing, and problem solving. Cornell Feline Health Center says, “Providing your cat with toys is a great way to encourage exercise and cognitive enrichment while strengthening the special bond you share.” Select toys that suit your individual cat and supervise when needed; Cornell’s safe-toy guidance covers toy safety.
19. Rotate play activities
As a practical way to keep play engaging, put some toys away and bring them back later, or vary the kind of interaction. This is a household suggestion, not a prescribed schedule; let your cat’s interest guide you.

20. Provide comfortable places to rest and scratch
Offer a clean, dry resting place with washable soft bedding, as ASPCA recommends. Appropriate scratching opportunities are also a practical way to accommodate normal behavior; the right setup depends on your cat and home, so no one product or quantity suits every household.
21. Pair outdoor access with identification—and weigh the risks
If your cat goes outdoors, ASPCA recommends a safety collar and ID tag. The organization also recommends keeping cats indoors because of outdoor risks. Consider your cat’s circumstances and discuss options with your veterinarian; identification does not eliminate those risks.
When a change is more important than a hack
Pay attention to sudden changes in eating, drinking, grooming, or behavior. Contact a veterinarian promptly if you suspect dehydration; Cornell cautions that it needs veterinary attention. In hot weather, make water available. Cornell’s heat-safety guidance warns that heat stroke can become life-threatening quickly: if signs appear, cool your cat gently and contact a veterinarian immediately.
ASPCA advises veterinary care when appetite loss, vomiting, diarrhea, or lethargy continues for more than two days. Severe or urgent signs may warrant care sooner; don’t wait for a time threshold if your cat appears seriously unwell. A fountain, food change, toy, or grooming routine cannot replace diagnosis or individual veterinary advice.
