How to choose a name that fits your cat

Try a short list aloud before deciding. The ASPCA shelter naming guidance recommends names that are easy to pronounce, have three or fewer syllables, relate to adopters, and are simple to remember. Petco’s Animal Care, Education and Compliance Team also suggests considering your cat’s appearance and personality, as well as how often you will say the name. These are useful filters, not guarantees that a cat will recognize or respond to a particular name.

  • Say it naturally: Use the name in an everyday call and see whether it feels comfortable to repeat.
  • Check the sound and length: Favor a name your household can pronounce and recall consistently.
  • Look for individual fit: Match the name to a visible feature or a personality you have actually observed.
  • Agree as a household: The people who will use the name often should be comfortable saying it.

If you are naming several cats, a shared theme can make the set easier to organize. ASPCApro gives gems and stones, colors, nature, and pasta as examples of litter-naming themes; a tough-name theme is another possible approach.

Naming a newly adopted cat

Use the shelter or rescue biography as a starting point: ASPCA adoption guidance says these bios describe an animal’s personality and unique needs. A cat may behave differently while adjusting to a new home, so give them time and space and let their character emerge before settling on a name. You can try a shortlist during that period without treating an early impression as the whole story.

After you pick a name

If you want the name on a physical item, an ID tag is one option. ASPCA says an ID tag or an implanted microchip can help ensure a cat is returned if lost. A tag displays information visibly; a microchip is implanted identification, so they are distinct ways to identify a pet.
