A concentration of 230-million-year-old amphibian fossils at Nobby Knob near Dubois, Wyoming, preserves the remains of Buettnererpeton bakeri. The study points to burial on a floodplain, but it does not identify a single proven cause of death: breeding-site aggregation and drought-related waterway restriction are possibilities, not established explanations.
What was found at Nobby Knob?
The 2025 study examines a fossil bonebed at Nobby Knob, near Dubois, Wyoming. The remains belong to Buettnererpeton bakeri, a temnospondyl amphibian, preserved in rocks dating to roughly 230 million years ago, during the Triassic Period. These animals were amphibians, not dinosaurs.
“Mass grave” is a vivid shorthand for the concentration. In scientific terms, the site is a fossil assemblage or bonebed: a place where remains accumulated and were preserved together. The assemblage represents a substantial share of the known material for Buettnererpeton, making it valuable for further study; the available account does not establish a precise percentage.
What does the evidence say about where the animals were buried?
The study authors interpret the fine-grained soils and layered sediments as consistent with a floodplain. Delicate skeletal elements and the lack of a strong-current alignment also weigh against substantial transport by fast-moving water. Together, these clues support a relatively calm burial setting rather than a clear high-energy event that swept the remains into place.

- Size: Curve length is 40 cm. Height is 35 cm
- Package Include:1 x Figure
- Feature:Diplocaulus Figure, Model Collection, Animal Skeleton Figure, GK Decor
- Material: Made of Resin
That evidence helps reconstruct the depositional environment, but it does not by itself reveal why the animals died or whether they died at the same moment.
What might have killed the amphibians?
The study discusses more than one possible explanation, and the evidence does not settle the question.

Aggregation near a breeding location
The animals may have gathered around a breeding site. If so, the concentration could reflect where they congregated, but the available findings do not directly demonstrate that the site was a breeding ground or establish breeding as the cause of death.
Waterways restricted during drought
The authors also consider whether drought reduced or restricted waterways, concentrating animals in shrinking wet areas. This is a proposed ecological explanation, not proof that a particular drought killed the assemblage.

The floodplain setting and preservation clues describe how remains may have been buried; neither uniquely identifies a mortality mechanism. Calling the site a “mass mortality event” should therefore not be taken to mean that a specific catastrophe has been confirmed.
Is this the same as Wyoming’s fossil burrow discovery?
No. The Nobby Knob bonebed concerns Buettnererpeton bakeri. A separate 2024 study described Ninumbeehan dookoodukah, another amphibian associated with estivation burrows in the upper Jelm Formation. That work addresses seasonal burrowing and monsoon-era ecology, not the Nobby Knob assemblage or its cause of death.

Why the bonebed matters
A substantial concentration of one amphibian species gives researchers material for investigating the animal and its setting. The sediment, preservation, and distribution of remains can help test how the assemblage formed, while the competing explanations remain open to further evidence. For now, the strongest conclusion is about the burial environment: a floodplain context is supported, but the reason these amphibians accumulated and died there is unresolved.
